THE RULES
What is required of me in class? Reading. Advanced reading. Understanding what you read. Remembering what to read. Expressing what you read in equally understandable English. Respecting the one talking, whether it be the teacher or a classmate. Wait for your turn to speak.

How fast will the pace be?

We will proceed at the pace expected from the course syllabus. If you fail to read in advance, and you are unable to fully understand the lesson, and fall behind the rest of the class, the class will not slow down to wait for you. Again, a basic requirement in the class is reading; lots of reading.

Will I be rquired to recite in class?

Yes, an inherent component of lecture-type instruction includes recitation. You are, therefore, required to speak up so that we will know if you have understood the lesson. How will I be graded in recitation? 1) If your name is called and you are absent = 0/10. If absence is excused = 4/10. 2) If you are called and your answer is wrong = 5/10 (for bravery and/or effort). 3) If your answer is correct = anywhere between 6/10 to 10/10, depending on the completeness and clarity of the answer. * Grammar will be a factor.

Answering "PASS" or "I DID NOT READ" (and the like) is unacceptable. You are presumed to have read in advance.

What about quizzes and exams?

NO surprise quizzes. All quizzes are announced. Thus, it is being announced now that you should expect to have at least two (2) quizzes per term. NO SPECIAL QUIZ. What if I am absent on a quiz day or on exam day? 1) If the absence is excused = you get the same grade as the one who got the lowest grade in class. 2) If the absence is unexcused = you get the lowest possible grade, which is 65. * Likewise, grammar will be a factor when it comes to quizzes or exams.

Can I bring in class my laptop or tablet?

Sure. Laptops and tablets are allowed, as long as the presence or use of the same will not distract the others in class. However, when called to recite, said gadgets must be closed or locked. While class is ongoing, do not use your gadgets simply to play games or engage in social media activities. While class is ongoing, put your phones on silent mode.

Will we have homework or assignments?

Indeed. Homework or assignments will be announced in class and will also be communicated to you via email. Submission of homework or assignments will either be: 1) Also via email; or 2) Via hard copy Homework or assignments submitted via email should be sent on or before 11:59 PM of the due date. Homework or assignments on hard copy should be submitted on or before 5:00 PM of the due date. This rule will apply to individual or group projects that may be assigned.
