IN THE NEWS

Council cleared for HQ move

CHESHIRE West and Chester Council has pressed ahead with plans to relocate from
County Hall into the new HQ building.
The decision clears the way for the University of Chester to move into County Hall, much to
the anger of some local residents.
There are fears that Handbridge could become the new Garden Lane, with student houses
popping up everywhere.
People in Shipgate Street were particularly unhappy, claiming that the university move
would lead to congestion, noise and disturbance.
Some people say that Handbridge will change forever and become the new ‘University
Quarter’ but councillors voted the move through, saying that it would benefit young people’s
education and represent a cost saving for the council in the long run.

Question mark over heritage service

THE CHESTER History and Heritage Centre, at St Michael’s Church, in Bridge Street, is
under threat due to service cutbacks.
Cheshire West and Chester Council says the community heritage service is being
integrated across museums, libraries and archives in the city but no final decision has been
made as to the fate of St Michael’s.

benefits cheat is caged

A BENEFIT cheat from Saltney has been sent to prison for 30 weeks after pleading guilty to
falsely claiming more than £70,000 in benefits.
Donna Depuis, of The Corner Pin Pub, High Street, Saltney and formerly of Elm Square,
Lache, appeared for sentencing at Chester Crown Court on Thursday 10th September.
The 42-year-old had previously appeared at Chester Crown Court in August where she
pleaded guilty to five counts of failing to report changes in her circumstances in order to
obtain Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, Income Support and Carers Allowance.
She also failed to declare her earnings from work and that she was living with her husband
and was overpaid a total of £70,817.53.
She was sentenced to 30 weeks imprisonment and must serve a least 15 weeks as
well as repaying all the overpaid benefit to Cheshire West and Chester Council and the
Department for Work and Pensions.
A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council said: “If you think someone you know

QUEEN’S PARk HIGH SCHOOL NEWS

New head gets to work

QUEEN’S Park High School has
welcomed its new head teacher
Stephen Casey.
He has taken over following 20
very successful years under the
guidance of the previous head
teacher Andrew Firman, who retired
at the end of August.
Mr Casey, originally from
Manchester, worked in a number
of schools in the North West before
taking up the post of head teacher
at a large school in the West
Midlands.
Mr Casey visited the Queen’s
Park High School on a number of
occasions in the summer term to
meet with staff and students and to
get to know the school ready to take
up his new post at the beginning of
September.
Mr Casey commented ‘It seems
such a long time since I was
appointed in January 2009 and I
have been really looking forward to
joining an already very successful
school. I’m indebted to the
assistance given to me by Mr Firman in the weeks leading up to the handover and I wish
him a very long and happy retirement.
“I am extremely pleased to be leading a school that has enjoyed considerable
achievements over the last few years, culminating in this year superb A level and GCSE
results. I am particularly pleased with the GCSE results for 2009 where 51% of students
achieved 5 A*-C including English and Maths. However we must not rest on our laurels.
These results provide a strong foundation that will lead to further success for our students.
“Our aim is to make Queen’s Park High School an outstanding school that secures
success and improvement, ensuring high quality education for all our students with
improving standards of learning and achievement.
“On a personal level I am also happy to returning to the North West having
spent several years further south.’

I never make predictions and I never will - paul Gascoigne

ANkLE SPRAIN IS THE

ARCH ENEmY!
bY PETER COLHOUN
WhAT can be done to help if you have a constant tendency to sprain your ankles?
There is a great deal we can do to help with ankle pain. Recently I gave the example of how
specialist insoles (orthotics) can balance your skeletal structure from the feet up, whilst re-timing the
way you walk. The net result is a ‘neutral’ form of gait that doesn’t put undue wear and tear on the
feet, ankles, knees, lower back and many other locations.
I gave the example of someone who has flat feet, or feet that ‘roll in’ when standing. This in turn tugs
on the inner areas of the knees, pulls the vastus lateralis muscle (that runs from the outside of the thigh
into the knee joint) and widens the pelvic area, placing stress on the hips and increased curvature of
the lower back.
This time, with outside (lateral) ankle sprains, we’re usually looking at the opposite scenario. Instead
of feet that roll in or present with low arches, the ankle-spraining foot is usually consistent with a high
arch.
What happens, is that the foot hits the outside of the heel when first contacting the ground. This is
normal and necessary, but the problem kicks in when the highly arched foot throws more body weight
to the outside edge of the foot. The constantly overloaded outer ankle areas on both feet give way
easily and people with this ‘cavus’ foot type remember back to sprains they sustained when playing
as children.
Over the long term, the regularly sprained ankle becomes a weakened joint with ligament damage -
and sadly – it is even more likely to fail and sprain in future.
So what can be done?
As a point of first aid, if you ever sprain your ankle, follow the RICE protocol: [R]est, steady and
support the ankle, [I]ce the joint with a cold compress to a recent injury to reduce swelling, [C]
ompress the joint slightly by wrapping the ankle in a thick layer of padding/bandaging and [E]levate
the injured limb to reduce further swelling.
What about Orthotics?
Once first aid is complete, it is a good idea to consider orthotics. Specially trained Podiatrists can
take an impression of your foot, which is then sent to a lab with a ‘prescription.’ The lab will then
make some orthotic insoles which in this case, will have two very important roles:
1. Accommodative control. Highly arched feet need to be supported properly. It is a drain on your
lower limb joints to walk on highly arched feet, where you only really strike the heel and ball of foot
areas when walking. If the arch spaced is ‘filled’ with flexible carbon fibre and 4mm of resilient
padding, you will walk with your whole sole-of-foot areas in contact with the bottom of your shoe,
thereby weight-distributing better.
2. Functional control. A specially prescribed orthotic can have subtle ‘posts’ and features that control
the way you walk. In this case, a heavy outside heel striker would benefit from a deeper heel cup with
low extrinsic posting to ‘stabilise’ the rearfoot/subtalar joint more neutrally under the ankle.

out on the continent – and after 100
years still faintly legible.
Fire fighter John Trainer’s family had
a tragic history. His son, aged 23, was washed overboard from City of Berlin on 25th March 1882
and his grandson died aboard SS Campania on 8th January 1911, also aged 23. He was buried at
sea.
Professor Robert Newstead, the renowned Roman archaeologist who discovered the amphi-
theatre and many other Roman remains, is also buried in the cemetery. So too is John Douglas,
the genius of Victorian architecture, responsible for so many buildings in Chester and many other
towns. He is buried just a few yards away from Thomas Meakin Lockwood who also designed
many of Chester’s buildings. It is most appropriate they should have such plain and simple monu-
ments – their buildings are far more meaningful.

AUTUmN DELIGHTS IN OCTObER
Gardening by Janet Heath

AUTUMN is well underway and your garden will be gradually shutting down in preparation for
winter. The exuberance of summer flowers and foliage gives way to the more subtle colours of
gold, russet, barley yellow and orange from grasses and leaves.
At this time of year there are still flowers - look out for Dahlias in white red or yellow, the pink
flowers of the fleshy Sedum spectabile and some Japanese Anemones will still be flowering.
However it is the foliage from grasses that will give you delight at this time of year. The grasses
such as Stipa gigantea with its tall oat heads and Miscanthus sinensis Zebrinus has cream striped
green leaves.
Trees such as Acers have wonderful rich red foliage. There are also many varieties of Crab
Apple (Malus) such as John Downie or Golden Hornet with red or yellow small apples that stay on
the trees in autumn.
Rowans or Sorbus trees also have ornamental berries that can last on the tree for weeks
although the birds tend to eat the red berries first leaving yellow and cream berries on the tree.
In the garden you can continue to dig up and split perennials at this time of year. The roots will
continue to grow even in frosty conditions in soil that is still warm from summer below the surface.
Conifers and other evergreens can be moved at this time of year, as there is less likelihood of the
roots drying out.
Lawns can be scarified and given an autumn feed in October. It is also a good time to lay new
turf as it will be well watered in and be less likely to be walked on thus allowing it to grow on well.
Complete digging up any potatoes making sure none are left behind to harbour diseases. Apples
that are best for keeping tend to be ready for harvesting in October. An apple that is ripe is one
that can be picked when you lift it gently and it comes away easily. Pulling an apple from the tree
is an indication that it is not yet ripe.
