DESIGN PROCESS :
Design Problems and Design Brief
• Before you can start a design project… you must find a problem to
solve – the design brief follows the problem and state clearly how
you intend to solve the design problem…

• The problem you are required to solve will usually arise from normal
everyday situation or context

• Design brief is a short statement of the need you have identified

from the contexts and situations

• Example : If you decide that the lack of proper storage for your pens
and pencils is a suitable design problem, you should begin to tackle
it by trying to state clearly what you need to do to solve the problems
DESIGN PROCESS :
Design Problems and Design Brief
• This could be to design and make a unit to hold pens and pencils.
This statement then is the design brief for the given problem. This
must be worded in such a way that preconceived ideas of what the
solution might be are avoided

• Such short statement clearly does not give sufficient information for
design solutions to be found. Therefore, a full investigation into the
problem is necessary
DESIGN PROCESS : Investigation

• The nature of the investigation will vary considerably, depending on the type
of design problem being tackled. Basically it consists of asking yourself a
series of questions about the problem and finding the answers to them.

• Below are examples of the type of questions which you might ask yourself :
– How many pencils and pens have to be held?
– Should other items such as erasers, sharpeners, etc., be included?
– What are the sizes of the items to be held?
– Where is the unit to be used?
– Will the unit have to be carried at any time?
– Could the pens, pencils or other items be dangerous in any way?
– What materials are available?
– Which of these are suitable?
– How much will the unit cost?
– How much time have you got to make the unit? Etc.

Example of design problem :

A number of houses have been broken into on my street. It has been noticed that the number of
strangers walking down our street has increased lately and house holders are becoming concerned
about the security of their houses. The police have advised people to make their houses look as if they
are occupied when they go away for a holiday or even out for the evening. This may deter a potential
thief from breaking into either the house or garage.

The Neighbourhood Watch scheme has also been introduced recently and this has helped people feel
more secure. However, even though neighbours will keep an eye on your property if you decide to go
out and leave the house empty, they cannot watch twenty four hours a day.

Often even the police ignore house alarms when they are activated because of the high number of
false alarms.
DESIGN PROCESS

Example of design problem :

a) Visitor to your home have difficulty in finding the correct house as there is
no identification on the outside

b) Having made hot drinks in your kitchen you find you have to make
several trips before your family are served in the lounge. This routine
often results in messy spillages

c) You have difficulty doing work on your desk in the evening because your
back is to the light which is in the center of the room. As a result, an
irritating shadow is cast over the work surface.

d) You have nowhere to keep your pens and pencils which always seem to
be lost or broken when you need them
DESIGN PROCESS

Example of design brief :

I am going to design and make a security device that will make my house look occupied when, in fact,
it is empty. Police statistics clearly show that houses are much more likely to be broken into when they
are empty. Consequently, if the house looks occupied it is likely to be safe.

The device will be mobile so that it can be moved from room to room, easy to set up and control and
also cheap to make. It must not be powered by mains voltage and in this way it will be completely safe
to be left ‘on’ for a long time and will not be affected by power cuts. It will be activated by anyone
approaching the hose from the front or back.

It must deter even profession crooks from taking an interest in our house and even convince people in
the street that the house is occupied.
