Reception Assembly
Congratulations to Reception who went on a guinea pig hunt in their assembly this morning. They clearly enjoyed giving the assembly as we did listening to it. Mr Symonds A Listening Ear Mrs Russell (Learning Support) has had an increasing interest in counselling and attended a Counselling Children course in London just before Christmas. The course was excellent and she now feels equipped to empower children to find their own solutions to problems that are occurring both inside and outside school. The children are going to be informed that at 1.30pm on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Mrs Russell will be available for a chat in her room. Children are free to pop in at these times or staff members might suggest they come along to talk to her. If you feel at any time your child would benefit from talking to Mrs Russell, please remind them of her availability. Form teachers will still remain the first port of call for day to day and urgent concerns and will always be available for parents and children. Year 6 Maths Projects Congratulations to Year 6 who presented their Maths Projects in assembly on Thursday. The project was to investigate Mount Rushmore and how the faces had been enlarged and carved in the granite. The assembly was full of interesting facts and comprehensive calculations. The presentations can be found on the website so go and check them out! Mrs Wakeling

Sport Relief 2014

Thank you very much for the donations/guesses that have already come in for Mr Jones Rowing Challenge (2nd January to 21st March). Some interesting guesses so far! If you havent guessed yet, you can collect a form from the office or Mr Jones at any time. The closest guess wins a meal for two at the Swan Inn, Tockington.

Inter-House Netball
Despite the foul weather all the girls competed well in their shortened matches. Special mention goes to Alexander who did very well as a team, and particularly Beth and Helena. The senior players, Seren and Imogen, led by example and gave the younger players a chance to learn the ropes. The results were Alexander (3rd), Cunningham (2nd) and Churchill (1st), winning both their matches. Thank you to all the parents who attended considering the weather!

Ski Trip
There are limited places left so please get the deposits into Mrs Wakeling as soon as possible to avoid disappointment

FOTM
Following a successful Autumn Term of FOTM events, we are pleased to report that the amounts raised were as follows: Quiz Night 791, Bonfire Night 628, Bake Sale 733 and the Clothes for Cause 212. This, together with money raised at the Summer Ball and summer farewell event, has meant that the FOTM have been able to fund the current building of the free flow area, the new blinds and electric retractable screen in the school hall, a gazebo for cross country events and the future building of the new adventure playground. Please carry on supporting our events as they benefit all our children. The next big one for the diary is the Family Fun Day on Saturday 21st June. There will also be another Clothes for Cause collection next term. Thank you all for your support.

Swimming News
On 11th February a small but keen group of 25 swimmers made their way to Clifton College for the annual regional round of the IAPS finals. The swimmers and I were all a little unsure what to expect or how we would perform or compare. However, despite the chaos, noise and excitement we performed excellently and enjoyed some quick times and promising swims. I was particularly pleased with the Year 4 and Year 7 swimmers who swam in older age groups. With another years muscle, good food and training who knows what they may achieve? The times and results came in on Wednesday and many of the swimmers have performed better than they thought, as the times were recorded out of six or seven schools. The swimmers will have to wait a little longer to find out if they have made the National Finals in May. Considering there will have been 2000 competitors in all regions, this would be a truly amazing feat for our small school. Thanks to Imogen and Harvey for being excellent and well-organised team captains and also to Mrs Campbell, Mrs Price and Mrs Edwards for transporting pupils and being a great support to the team. 1st places: Helena Brain, Harvey Jones, Alex Grocott 2nd places: Olivia Banks, Max Curtis, Ellie Parker,U13 Medley team, Peter Banks, U11 free relay team, small school relays,U10 Medley and free relays, Poppy Carter 3rd places :Iona Campbell, Jake Wakeling, Rachel Shutt, U10 Medley team, Bennie Sanzo, Ollie Shutt, Abi Blackwell, Alex Jacobi, Imogen Rees, Olivia Campbell. 4th places: Ella & Rohan Howard Robinson, Tom Edwards, Jessie Sanzo and James Allen. Swimmers close to the qualifying times of 2013 include Jake Wakeling, Rachel Shutt, Helena Brain, Imogen Rees, Alex Grocott, Ellie Parker, Max Curtis, Harvey Jones, Seren Clayton and Olivia Banks. Thanks for making it a very special afternoon. Mrs B Hinchliffe

Music Department
Informal Concert Well done to all the children who took part in the Informal Concert on Monday. We had a lovely range of lunchtime entertainment with some fantastic solo singing, guitar, fife, piano and a wonderful rendition of Coldplay's Yellow by Roshan Patel who played drums and sang! The Year 3 girl band '3 Direction' are also worth looking out for in the future, they certainly had the 'X Factor' with their acoustic version (for voice, ukulele and piano) of 'I wish I was a teabag'! We look forward to the next concert which is scheduled for Tuesday 4th March at 1.30 pm. Keep practising over half term everyone! Instruments and Practice! Just a gentle reminder to take all instruments home and keep practising over the holidays, recorder players too. I am hoping for some karate recorder black belts this year! Many thanks. Mrs Warn and all the instrumental staff

Tockington Titbits
Freddie Cooper was really excited to get his clarinet this week All of Year 4 bravely tasted hardtack (ship's biscuit)

Handwriting & Presentation Competition

The Handwriting and Presentation Competition took place again this week for Years 3 to 8. The standard is definitely improving and choosing outright winners is getting very difficult. The competition required children to write out poems about love for Valentines Day and I hope the children enjoyed the poems they had to copy. The competition is also about presentation on the page so layout, an eye for detail and careful, appropriate illustrations are all elements on which the work is judged. The winners, who are awarded School Scribe status until the next competition, are: Year 3: Jeanne Veron, Most improved Luke Dutton; Year 4: Freddie Cooper, Most improved Harry Huby; Year 5: Dalis Jones, Most improved Angus Duncan; Year 6: Olivia Banks, Most improved Helena Brain; Year 7: Lucy Allan-Jones, Most improved Roshan Patel; Year 8: Seren Clayton, Most improved Elliott Orchard and Luke Dutton The winners, as School Scribes, will be asked to write letters on behalf of the school and will receive a badge, a certificate and a small prize. Those who have shown a significant improvement for the competition will receive certificates. Congratulations to all of the winners and encouragement to all in your efforts to present your work well on paper.

LoveReading4Kids
All of the children from Years 3 to 8 have Reading Passports, which, when they have read a book, should be completed and stamped. This is to encourage them to read widely and continuously. In the holidays, why not encourage your children to read by visiting the library or by browsing books on LoveReading4Kids where you will find a number of reviews from children in our school as well as many, many others. The latest reviews we have posted were written by Lucy AllanJones and Aditi Mehendale. This is a good website for guiding your child's reading as is the Bookbuzz website and the Book Trust. Happy Reading! Judith Case

Cross Country
Another muddy trudge through the countryside. Three of our Year 5 and 6 athletes ran the Senior Course as a reward for their excellent performances in the Glos League. Alec Grocott, Dalis Jones and Ellie Parker came home in 1st, 3rd and 4th places against all of our Year 7 and 8 girls and boys. Alex came home in 12 minutes 51 seconds, Dalis in 14 minutes 32 and Ellie in 14 minutes 55 seconds on a very muddy course. There were notable performances from Amy Horler, Maddie Summers, Alex Gooch, Olivia Campbell, Lucy Allan-Jones, Olivia Banks and Helena Brain. Heres to some dry conditions after half term!

Photography Competition
Don't forget to get snap happy over half term! The theme for the competition this term is REGENERATION - think baby lambs, buds appearing on trees, beautiful sunrises and so on. The closing date for entries is March 13th and entries should either be emailed to the school office or submitted to Mrs Martin on a named USB stick. Remember to take as high resolution an image as possible because the winning entry will be reproduced onto a canvas. Good luck!!

Mosaic Madness
We had a wonderful two days in the Art Room this week working with mosaic artist, Emma Leith to create our enormous Tree of Life which will eventually hang outside the library. Earlier this term every child in the school (including the nursery) decorated their own leaf with mosaic tiles. Under Emma's instruction all these leaves were glued onto the tree shaped wooden backboard and each year group spent time mosaicing different elements of the tree. We have almost finished it - here are a few photographs as a sneak preview.
