and Distribution
1 / 2 Service Bulletin G-5.1
1. INTRODUCTION
Based in Winterthur, Wrtsil NSD Switzerland was formed in April 1997 within the merger of
the former Wrtsil Diesel and New Sulzer Diesel Ltd to Wrtsil NSD Corporation.
Wrtsil NSD Switzerland Ltd continues a diesel tradition going back to the origin of the diesel
engine in the 1890s when the Sulzer family signed an agreement with Rudolf Diesel.
Wrtsil NSD Switzerland Ltd carries on as such with the Sulzer brand a name, that is regarded
world-wide as being synonymous with leadership in diesel engine technology.
Wrtsil NSD Corporation is a global engineering company focussing on marine, power and
industrial applications. Wrtsil NSD designs, manufactures, markets and services Wrtsil
and Sulzer engines from 500 to 66'000 kW (700 to 90'000 bhp). The company engineers and
provides complete propulsion systems for all vessel types and turnkey power plants from 1 to
300 MW.
Wrtsil NSD Switzerland Ltd is the dedicated company for 2 stroke engines within the
corporation, with full responsibility for the Sulzer brand engines, from design throughout their
entire lifetime.
Around 15'000 Sulzer engines are in service today propelling more than a third of the world's
fleet of ocean going ships, as well as making a significant contributon to global electricity
supplies.
All these users are fully supported by Wrtsil NSD Switzerland Ltd through Wrtsil NSD's
own world wide network for service, based in over 50 countries.
This Service Bulletin should be kept in a separate file in the control room. The respective pages or
tables of the Service Bulletin with modifications to the Operating Manual, Maintenance Manual or
Code Book should be copied and filed in the respective Manual or Book.
2. NEW HEADING
Based on the above, the heading of our well known Technical Information Diesel Bulletins had
to be adapted accordingly.
3. DESIGNATION
Before 1974 the bulletins were numbered consecutively. We then introduced a grouping and
designating system to differentiate between the engine types.
The present system is based on the following principle:
Code sign Valid for Code sign Valid for
2S Two-Stroke engines 4S Four-Stroke engines
R R type engines A A type engines
RD RD type engines S S 20 type engines
RND RND type engines Z Z type engines
RND-M RND..M type engines ZA ZA type engines
RL RL type engines ZAS ZA 40 S type engines
RTA RTA type engines G General, all engine types
The code sign is always followed by a consecutive number.
2 / 2 Service Bulletin G-5.1
Should a Bulletin with a defined designation be valid also for other engine types or for specific
bores only, then this is clearly stated within the yellow part of the cover sheet as e.g.
-"Technical Information to all Owners / Operators of Sulzer ZA 40 and ZA 40S Type Engines"
or -"Technical Information to all Owners / Operators of Sulzer RTA 58 and RTA 62 Engines"
etc.
You will notice that some bulletins are designated with additional remarks:
-2nd edition: same content with minor corrections
-Revised: same content with additional information and updated
-"RL-1.1" : same subject with additional information and updated
-Supersedes Bulletin...: the former bulletin is not valid any more, either partly or
completely
4. PURPOSE OF SERVICE BULLETINS
Service Bulletins are intended on one hand to inform the technical personnel about important
modifications to components, particularly those which we consider to be essential for improved
operating behaviour and thus beneficial to owners and operators having engines already in
service.
On the other hand we want to pass on experience to the engine room staff, gained from
installations in practical service, with regard to operation and maintenance of the respective
engine types.
Our Service Bulletins are to be regarded as supplementary to the Operating Manual and/or
Maintenance Manual and should, therefore, be forwarded and made available to the
personnel operating and servicing the Sulzer engine.
