A school visit to the Evaristo Valle museum

The visit starts with a general outline of Evaristo Valles life and work by Toms, Mariana and Hugo (4A). After that, every group of students presented the painting they had previously worked on in the classroom to the rest of their classmates.

En la calleja

This painting is called En la calleja. It was painted by Evaristo Valle in 1922. He used oil on canvas. The size of this painting is 87x62cm. It shows a beautiful lanscape. Its typical of the romanticism style. We can see a natural scene with trees, cows, a beautiful landscape, two people flirting and the green field.

This painting was made with oil on canvas. It has curved lines, and the main colours are warm, but we can also see cold colours. The atmosphere is dull. It represents a romantic theme, we can see the people, the cattle, the dark evening Its a quiet and serene scene. I have chosen the painting because it reminds me of my village. The clothes the boy is wearing look like my neighbours clothes in the village.

Pelea de gallos

The title of the painting is Pelea de gallos. It is a landscape with characters, and it shows chickens fighting. It dates from 1929, the style is impressionist. The painting technique that Evaristo Valle used was oil on canvas. The painting measures 89 by 98 centimeters. It is placed here in the Evaristo Valle museum in Gijon. The subject is a social critique because it shows the bad traditions of the Puerto Rican people. In the picture we can see the chickens fighting each other, with two men, two women and a kid watching. In the background there is a house and palm trees. The technique is oil on canvas and the lines are curved. The brushstrokes are fine, and the texture is smooth. The colors are

warm in the foreground and cold and pale in the background. The theme of the painting is the natural world. The atmosphere is violent. We chose this painting because we like the critique that he made of the chicken fights. In our opinion he painted this because he remembered his trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico. En la fuente
This picture is called En la fuente (In the fountain) It dates from the twentieth century (1945). Evaristo Valle had his own original style. Its a landscape with natural scenery, and the artist used oil on canvas. In the foreground we can see two women sitting next to a fountain, probably theyre talking about old legends from their village. In the middle ground there are some fields and trees. And in the background there are some hills and the blue sky. It seems like it is morning time and it is autumn because trees are turning red. We think that the theme is the natural world and it represents the relationship among the people in the village

Charla de pescadores

In the foreground you can see four fishermen, in the middle ground on the right side there are some houses and on the left side you see other people. Finally, in the background, the big blue sea. This painting uses the technique of perspective to give the houses and the great blue ocean a sense of distance. It also uses the sfumato technique to blend colors and shapes. We can see straight and curving lines. Linear shapes are predominant. Brushtrokes may be fine. In the front the colours are bright, but at the back the colours are dark.

The subject is a natural scenery. We think the painting is a portrait of people celebrating carnival. In the foreground you can see a man who is the main character of the painting. In the middle ground you can see two people, these people are the secondary characters. The characters are dancing, singing, and probably drunk. In the background you can see the blue sky with some clouds. The lines are curving and the shapes are spherical. The brushstrokes are blended and the texture is smooth. The colours are cold for the background and warm for the people. We chose this painting because it is funny painting and it reminds us of a classic carnival.

Emigrantes

This landscape was painted by Evaristo Valle in 1904, using oil on canvas, and it measures 59 by 80cm. This natural scenery illustrates a path in a valley that finishes in the sea. In the foreground theres a group of emigrants carrying their luggage. Some of them are trying to push a big black stone. The sea and a cliff make up the middle ground. In the background the sky is showing the first light of the day. Lines are curving, shapes are geometric and brushstrokes are blended. Texture is smooth and colours (mainly brown and orange) are warm and dark. Its atmosphere is gloomy. We think this painting symbolises the emigrants wish for freedom. The big black rock could symbolise their slavery or bad way of life before they go away, and the sea illustrates their freedom. The sunlight that comes from the East (the right in the picture) shows us the sunrise that could portray hope, because the breaking dawn is a

symbol of hope and future. They are naked because they havent got anything yet and they come from a life of slavery. Tamara, Laura and Diego 4B

Humorada de la corrida
This painting called Humorada de la Corrida was painted by Evaristo Valle in 1917. It has an impressionist and symbolist style. It's painted with watercolour and pencil on paper. The painting measures 25 by 18 cm. The most important parts in the painting are in the foreground which represents a man and a women sitting at a table, and the background, that shows a bullfighter with a bull. Evaristo Valle used the techique of watercolour. He used curved lines, warm and bright colours like yellow, orange, red... It's the bull who fights the bullfighter and not the other way round. This makes you think that Evaristo Valle was against bullfighting.

El potrillo en el corral
Its called El potrillo en el corral (The pony in the playgroud). It was painted by Evaristo Valle in 1917.He used oil on canvas, the painting measures 54cm by 75cm. Its a landscape of a natural scene with fields and trees. You can also see a pony in the playground of a house. Behind the house there are some trees. It represents the daily village life. Its a mix of straight and curving lines, the shapes are geometric. The brushtrokes are fine and the texture is rough and the colours are a mix of warm and cold colours: red, purple, green and brown. Colours are bright, brilliant and light. The theme of the painting is the natural world because it is a village. It represents the house of a family. It shows a serene and peaceful atmosphere. It reminds us of my grandparents house in the village when I went to have lunch with them at the weekends in spring with nature, the animals and the trees. We think Evaristo Valle felt very happy when he painted this cheerful landscape. It makes us also feel good, because the landscape is very nice, and we like the brushstrokes and the colours.

This painting is a landscape with two horse riders. It dates from 1917, at the beginning of the XX century. The technique he used is oil on canvas. The painting measures 40 by 47 centimetres and it is housed in Evaristo Valle Museum. This painting represents a natural scene where we can see two horse riders, a woman riding a white horse and an older man riding a brown horse in the foreground. In the middle ground we can see a landscape. It could be Asturias but it could also be Castilla because the hot colours illustrate a summer day. In the background we can see green hills and blue mountains in the distance. We think the colours of the sky represent morning time or midday. The colours used are hot and bright. The painting shows a natural and peaceful atmosphere. This picture symbolises freedom and peace because when we ride a horse we experience a wonderful feeling. Andrea, Gloria and Arancha S. 4B
