Literacy - Students will participate in Literacy groups where they will read books at their reading level and work on comprehension, phonemic awareness and other reading skills. Students will continue to learn personal spelling words. Our thematic focus for the term will be, Change where the students investigate change of characters, scientific changes, changes of opinion etc. Much of the grammar that will be taught this term centres on the types of grammar needed to write various texts related to these themes. Homework and Talk topics Attached to this overview is the list of Talk Topics and the Project for Term 1. While we encourage all students to participate in these programs, they are not compulsory. Please support your child to complete as many as you are able to and let the classroom teacher know if you were unable to complete the tasks. Numeracy - In Maths this term we will be covering the following topics: Weeks Topics 1-2 Diagnostic assessments 3-4 Diagnostic Assessments Whole Number Time 5-6 Patterns and Algebra Volume and Capacity 7-8 Patterns and Algebra Data 9-10 Addition and Subtraction Money

COGS Through the Connected Outcomes Group (COGS) unit Our Families, students will explore the many groups that have different roles in our lives, including family groups, special interest groups and community groups. We can better understand others by understanding what is similar and unique about our families and groups to which we belong. Science Students will be investigating change through the Primary Connections unit, Spot the Difference. The Spot the Difference unit is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. By observing change, students glimpse the diversity of materials in their world. Students explore change through the context of food including spaghetti, chocolate and popcorn. Students learn about how heating or cooling a food can change its properties and whether these changes can be reversed or not. An investigation about which type of chocolate melts the fastest will help students draw conclusions about how fast or slow changes can happen and the consequences of change. How can you help this term? There are a variety of ways you can help support your childs learning this term: (1) Continue to support your child to complete homework, home reading and other projects (2) Volunteer to support your childs teacher during literacy groups (3) Talk to your class parent about other ways you can get involved in the school If you have any questions regarding the learning program in the classroom this term, please do not hesitate to make an appointment to talk to your class teacher. Thank you for your on-going support, Rob Ernsteins Classroom teacher

PROJECT : Brainstorm other ways that you can think of where change happens, such as animals and plants growing; sunny changing to rainy; shadows getting longer; shoes wearing out; a baby growing to a child; a teenager, to an adult, to an old person; baking a cake; a caterpillar changing to a butterfly; fruit ripening. In order to display your understanding of these changes, you will need to create a before and after image. One idea could be to glue a large circle of paper onto a paddle-pop stick and draw the before picture on one side and the after picture on the other. You may also choose to complete it using a computer program or piece of cardboard. Each presentation is to be accompanied by an oral presentation, describing what you have made and how the images you have created, change. EVEN WEEK : Free Topic Choice: Students choose any topic they wish. They may bring in a prop for inspiration, such as : an item of cloth ing, an object, a photograph etc. (No toys, please) ODD WEEK : Free Topic Choice: Students choose any topic they wish. What you liked when you were a baby may not be something that you like now, and vice-versa. Bring in a book that you used to love but have now grown out of. Why do you no longer like it as much? What has changed? ODD WEEK : As we grow older we go through many changes both physically and mentally. What you liked when you were a baby may not be something that you like now, and vice-versa. They have developed and changed over the years and now look entirely different to how they did in the past. Interview your grandparent and get them to explain the differences in schooling when they were younger. You may wish to film, take pictures or drawings in order to assist you in your presentation.
