Assignment

2 for February 11

Due: February 12

Title: Conceptual/Editorial style Introduction: Conceptual/Editorial style often uses landscape and/or architectural elements with a human figure in the picture plane. An important element of this style is the figure ground relationship. The figure will either be very large for the ground, or an object that becomes the ground for the figure. The figure is usually very simple lines with little or no articulation of hands, feet or facial features. The line work for the figure is minimal and often drawn with fluid and curvilinear shapes. The figure is seldom symmetric in its form, and is usually in an action or movement. A common theme for this style centers on business or technology and uses images that represent common icons. With this style, clothing would have little or no detail. Landscape elements are distorted. Architectural elements may include bridges, stairs, doors, and other forms that transition onto other planes. This style incorporates visual disproportions or abstractions that are reminiscent of surrealism. Architectural forms usually consist of simple geometric shapes such as cubes, trapezoids and pyramids. Research: Search the internet for the work of artist Jean Michael Folon. His work very likely began this style of illustration View illustrators styles that have similar content and simplified forms. There is a file in the share folder with a list of web sites to view this style. Copy the URL and use to search various sites. Brainstorm: Using Illustrator, set up an 8.5 x 11 page and make a list of subjects that could be used for business illustration using this style. The research should stimulate some ideas. Create a few concept drawings as you go. This file may be turned in with roughs by creating multiple pages. Roughs: Continuing with Illustrator, in an 8.5 x 11 page, create studies of various figures using the simplified style found in the research. Add pages as needed. Save these pages with your initials. (_ _ _ #2Editprocess.ai) Comps: Create an environment with implied space. Add architectural or landscape elements in the style shown in the research. These elements may include common objects enlarged as architecture. Import figures from the rough and save before going to the final. The comps may also be included as multiple pages from roughs. Final: Open a new Illustrator file 8.5 x 11 and create a bounding box that is 8 x 10 inches to contain the final illustration. Import the comp by copy and paste or dragging directly from one page to the final. Turn in the rough and final as digital files with your initials and #2 edit final (example: _ _ _#2editfinal.ai). Rubric: 1. Brainstorm with range of ideas for this style. 2. Rough with multiple variations of objects and figures. 3. Clear use of the conceptual style of drawing as outlined. 4.Well drawn comps with architectural or landscape environment. 5. Figure well drawn within the environment. 6. Balance of elements in the composition. 7. Use of color and gradients. 8. Quality of the final illustration showing attention to detail. 9. Understanding of the style

outlined in the introduction. 10. Creative interpretation of the project.
