LowCostHomebuiltWormCastingHarvester

Whatisvermicompost?Vermicompostisthe castingsorwormpoopfromorganicwaste streams.Eiseniafoetida,commonlyknownasred wiggler,brandling,ormanureworms,tobreak downorganicmaterialsandfoodscrapsfrom yourhousehold.Thevermicompostcanthenbe usedtoamendsoilsinyourgardenandhouse plants. Thefinishedcastingsmustbeseparatedfromthe wormsandbeddingtocreateauniformquality product.An1/8inchwiremeshscreencut12 inchby12inchcanbeusedtoseparatethe castings.Ahandfullofbeddingisplacedonthe screenandthenshakenbyhandoveracontainer. Thefinishedcastingsfallthroughthescreenand theunfinishedbedding,wormsandeggsisputbackintothewormbinforfurtherprocessing. Harvestingthewormcastingswiththismethodisverytimeconsuming.Aonecubicfootareaofbedding takesaboutanhourtoprocess.Eachweekthewormbinwillproducethissameamountofmaterialtobe harvested.Nowwearelookingat52hoursayearharvestingcastings. Compostingwormsareveryprolificandwithenoughfoodandroomtheirpopulationgrowsexponentially. Largercompostbinsrequireabetterharvester.Therearecommercialharvestersavailablefrom$150to thousandsofdollarsbutthisisnoteconomicalformosthomevermicomposters.Thefollowingharvester turnedouttobelowcost,easytouseandeasytostoreitemthatanyonecanbuildwithminimaltools.

Totalcostshouldbelessthan$35dollarsbut usingrecycledmaterialswillreduceoverallcosts andisalwaysgoodfortheenvironment.

Assembly:

Step1:Thebucketwassectionedintotwo,four
inchsegments.Thetopandbottomwerenotused inthisproject.Pleaseremembertouseproper personalprotectiveequipmentandreadyour ownersmanualsforpropertoolusage.

Step2:Wrapthehardwareclothintoacylinder
aroundtheoutsideofoneofthebucketpiecesand ducttapeinplace.Useaclamporpieceofhobbywire tosecureotherendofthecylinder. Step3:Usethe24gagewiretolaceupthehardwarecloth makingatightweave.Youmayhavetodoublebacktogeta tightseam. Step4:Placethecylinderinsidetheotherbucketpieceand ducttapeinplace.Otherformsoffastenersmaybeneededto holdthehardwareclothcylindertotheplasticbucket.Short sheetrockscrewsinsertedfromtheoutsidetoinsidework well.Keeptheoutsideofthecylinderassmoothaspossibleto avoidcatchingyourselfwhenoperatingtheharvester.Replace theducttapewhennecessary.

Step5:Thecradleisassembledby
predrillingthepaintrollers.Twoholes paralleltotherollerthroughthe handle. Step6:Screwtherollerstothe2X4s 10inchesapartwith11/2drywall screws.Findthecenterofthe2X4and measure5incheseachside. ThePVCpipesslideontotherollers, butnotaffixedtoallowforbreak downoftheassemblyforfuture moves.

OperatingtheHarvester
Thisisamanualoperatedharvesterbutwiththerollersoperatesveryeasilywithalargeloadof wormcastings.Thedesigncanbemodifiedforlargerscreensizes,butthe1/8hardwarecloth givesaverynicecastingandthewormeggsgobackintothewormbin. Themoistercontentisvery importantwhenusingascreen harvester.Thecasingsnormally needtohavethemoister contentreducedcomparedto therestofthewormbedding.A goodruleofthumbiswhenyou grabahandfulandcompressit shouldformaclump,butthen breakapartagainintoafine texture. Theharvesterpicturedissetup onsawhorsesbutcanbesetup overaplasticstoragecontainer, onatableoranythingthatsuite you.Loadthescreenwitha smallshovelfullofworm bedding.Alargesodacup workswellasascoop.

Graspthetopofthecylinderandpulldown towardsyourselfandletitroll.Oneendof theharvestermayneedtobeelevatedsothe materialtravelsouttheoppositeenditis loaded.Makesureyouhaveacontainerto catchthemateriallargerthanthescreen. Thiscanbemixedbackintothewormbinand usuallycontainsmanywormeggsand unprocessedwormbedding.
