20,000 turnout for Tzu Chis thanksgiving, blessing rites

OVER 20,000 Ormocanons attended Tzu Chi Foundations 2013 Year End Blessing and Prayer Vigil at Ormoc City Superdome on January 17. Attendees from all over Ormoc, with or without invitation, were eager and early in the venue. Some even arrived 3 AM for the morning session, saying they werent able to receive Tzu Chis financial assistance and hoped they would be giving out money that day. It turned out to be a prayer vigil, not another wave of cash distribution. To recall, the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation distributed relief assistance to 10,000 Ormocanons in 9 barangays, including cash of P 8,000.00, P 12,000.00 and P 15,000.00 to each beneficiary, depending on the household size. For Ormoc alone, the Buddhist foundation poured in P 120,000,000.00 in cash assistance aside from its cash-for-work program in Tacloban City where a victim gets P 500.00 a day to clean up the city. When told by the volunteers that the event was a mere thanksgiving, most of the people chose to remain and joined the thanksgiving activity. The turnout was huge that the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation expanded their sessions into three batches, instead of just two. A by invitation affair, they accommodated those with no invitations who waited outside the venue and never left. It was learned that 20,000 invitations were released but more than 20,000 attended. Part of the Tzu Chi thanksgiving session was a short video showing how the foundation raised funds from 44 countries for Yolanda victims. It showed how Tzu Chi volunteers from all over the world mobilizes to better peoples lives especially in times of crisis and disasters. That is what the Tzu Chi foundation has been doing for 47 years, it was further learned. LTFRB transfers regional office to Ormoc
THE LAND Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has temporarily transferred its office to this city, following their previous offices destruction from Typhoon Yolanda. The old LTFRB office was located at the government-sequestered Nipa Hut, previously owned by the Romualdez family. Atty. Arthur Saipudin said that their stay here in Ormoc is just temporary. He said Tacloban is still the best location since it was strategically located between Leyte and Samar islands. Saipudin, who was in their Tacloban office when Yolanda struck, said he managed to stay out of harms way by seeking refuge at its second floor. However, he laments that they were not able to get their all their things from the Tacloban office because after Yolanda, Rep. FM Romualdez had it fenced and guarded and would not allow them to enter. For this, he said, he was recommending to Atty. Winston M. Ginez for the filing of an ethics complaint against the congressman for conduct unbecoming of a public official. TRULY, DENGUE does not choose its victims. Even vicegovernors are not immune to them, joked Leyte vice governor Carlo P. Loreto who was confined at the Divine Word Hospital after he was diagnosed with dengue. The vice governor said he might have contracted the mosquito-borne disease while doing the rounds of Leyte province to extend relief to needy towns. Gov. Mic (Petilla) and I had been going around, visiting constituents and extending relief, said Loreto. Meanwhile, here in Ormoc, for the period of January 1- 19, 2014 alone, 29 people were reported to have contracted the disease. Six of them, it was learned, were volunteers of foreign aid organizations. The treatment of dengue, which usually needs transfusion, has sent the Philippine Red Cross here scrambling for blood donations. Sources said it is far worst in the Waray area. However, councilor Dr. Mario Rodriguez said that the incidence was still relatively low compared to the same period last January, which registered 85 patients. We have intensified campaign, said Dr. Rodriguez, who is also the chairman of the committee on health at the Sangguniang Panlungsod. City Health authorities are calling on residents to clean up their surroundings and make sure there are no receptacles, no matter how small, that would hold clean water which could be a breeding place of the dengue-carrying Ae. Egypti mosquitoes. There is also widespread flu, which some suspect as Chikungunya. It shares the same vector as dengue, but has low morbidity. Residents have reported catching a kind of flu which is very painful on the joints, and they dont even get colds and coughs. FIVE PEOPLE landed at the Ormoc Doctors Hospital last January 15, at around 2:00 in the morning, after the motorcycle they were all riding collided into a parked 10-wheeler along the highway at Panali-an, Ipil, this city. All riders were thrown to the road and what was worse, some were ran over by a tricycle that was following them. Fire near Petron depot panics residents

ORMOC CITY A fire razed a two-storey house just beside the fence of the Petron depot here at Brgy. Linao on January 16 in the evening, sending residents into a panic at the thought the depot could explode. Insp. Hermes Cadion, in an interview, said that the estimated damage was P 700,000.00. However, they were still investigating its cause. Eyewitnesses said the fire started at around 7:50 PM on the second floor of the house owned Joel and Chona Milan. Nakabati nalang ako anak ug boto sa amu taas, said Chona Milan. The household was using a generator but second floor lines were all condemned, she added. They are not sure what caused the fire because they did not light candles or anything that might start a fire. Naa siguroy nag binuang ug itsa [ug kayu] sa taas, inferred Chona. The house, just a wall away from the Petron depot, sent the entire neighborhood into a panic at the thought that gas-containing tanks would explode and wipe out the biggest barangay in Ormoc. Despite the rains, people were running in all directions. Some have already prepared to flee with their families in pump boats, while some left their homes and strayed far from the danger zone. However, when Gerry Ticong, a security guard of Petron, noticed the burning house, he immediately called the attention of other workers on-duty. The depot has its own fire brigade and equipment. 20 men led by Enrico Olorvida and Archie Gaspar immediately doused the fire with their 3 water hoses. It took them around 20 minutes to put out the fire, just when 3 BFP fire trucks arrived. Toto Locsin wants outstanding Ormocanos cited

VICE MAYOR Toto Locsin Jr., in their pre-session caucus, has asked the council to give citations to Ormocanons who are bringing in fame to the City, among them boxer Jason Redondo, the Ormoc Powerlifters, Ms Scuba International Ms Christine Paula Love Bernasor and Ms. Diane Muego who was hailed Ms Cebu just this week. The vice-mayor personally accompanied boxer Jason Redondo to meet with Mayor Edward Codilla. Vice Mayor Locsin said that he has been supporting Redondos career since he was 12. I introduced him to Wacky Salud and told Wacky to become his handler. We supported him whatever we could. We would give him a little money, vitamins, whatever we can to help him. The young boxer started fighting pro when he turned 17. Just last January 12, 2014, he earned the feather weight belt in a Philippine Boxing Federation fight held at Borbon, Cebu. Locsin said his managers are already talking about his next fight which might be held in Japan. It would be Redondos first international fight. Redondo, in his pro years,

As for the Ormoc Powerlifters, the vice mayor said these people are reaping honor for the city even in the international powerlifting circle already. Just last December 5-11, the powerlifting team 9 gold medals and two silvers in various categories during the Asian Powerlifting Championships held at the Great Eastern Hotel in Quezon City. This years host was the Philippines. Anita Koykka won 4 gold medals and currently holds the world record in Deadlift of 175.5 kilograms. Letecia Mangcao, on the other hand, hauled 4 more gold medals and hailed the Asian Champion of the 47 kg. class. Regie Ramirez, on the other hand, won a silver medal in the Juniors Category of the Asian Classic (Raw) Benchpress. Leticia Mangcao romped off with another silver medal in the same class for the 47 kg. Open (Womens) while Anita Koykka got another gold for the 57 kg. Open. Vice Mayor Locsin also asked the council to include the two beauty queens, saying they also are doing their part to make Ormocanons proud.

Gomez, her sister Caren Torres-Rama explained how Tzu Chi provided immediate help to the people of Ormoc through medical mission, shelters, relief goods and financial assistance, among others. The 9 barangays chosen by Tzu Chi were greatly helped: Camp Downes, Can-adieng, Ipil, Curva, Linao, Punta, San Pablo, Biliboy and Lilo-an. Caren Rama then read to the crowd Cong. Lucys message to Tzu Chi foundation that says, More than the relief, shelter, and assistance, you were the first to give hope to us. We are endlessly grateful. Before the sessions ended, everyone was given a token that is said to bring good health and prosperity, straight from Master Cheng Yen in Taiwan, the Buddhist monk who founded Tzu Chi. The token symbolizes the Masters blessing which is more than any monetary value. There was then a moment of solemnity as candles were lighted and altogether prayed for world peace and unity.

Aray!
I AM writing this between bouts of fever. I titled this piece Aray! because it seems to be my favorite word since Friday. While I havent visited the doctor yet, I suspect I have Chikungunya. My joints are so painful I could hardly walk when it attacked on Friday but I had to bear it because I had to go to the Vice-Mayors office which is on the third floor. Climbing up was purgatory and going down was hell. My knees and ankle felt like it was on fire. I could only thank having the hubby with me, who, in between kantiyaws about me having rayuma already, held me steady as we went up and down. Aray, aray, aray one step, one aray. Hah, now its me who is making kantiyaw with him. Hes the one who is contorted with pain, bwahahaha Anyway, I never entertained the thought of Chikungunya. I was even more inclined to believe I had dengue, the mild one. It was after a friend, a health practitioner, told me that I could have it that I began researching on the disease. She said I was exhibiting its symptoms. First, let me tell you the good news (not for those who want to see me off the face of Ormoc, hehe): Its not a fatal. Second, you get lifetime immunity after getting infected once. These facts I gathered from the World Health Organization website. The bad news is, its vector is Ae. Egypti, the very same mosquito that also carries dengue. Which means weve got a population of mosquitoes that are potential dengue carriers, a disease that could be fatal. The WHO said a person can even be infected with both diseases. After posting that I had suspected Chikungunya, Ken Enecio called me up saying that all of them in their house, except him, had the same condition. His brother Eric would not even stand up because his ankles and soles are so painful when he does. I told him it was just a suspicion. I can only be sure if I had my blood tested which I intend to do. The WHO said that it is on the fourth or fifth day that the infection can be detected by a blood test. Chikungunya was first identified at Tanzania in Africa in 1952. The name chikungunya derives from a word in the Kimakonde language, meaning to become contorted and describes the stooped appearance of sufferers with joint pain (arthralgia). I had taken back to using katol. Honestly, however, I am not very sure if it would really work to ward away dengue-carrying mosquitoes. There is nothing much that I can also do. When I look around our neighborhood here at Malbasag, I see lots of used tires with pools of water in it. A house next door that was unroofed by Yolanda was abandoned. There are some pots and pans that have accumulated rainwater since November 8. Its just there, fertile breeding waters for these disease-carrying mosquitoes. A text from my good friend Bebot Fuentes just came in. He said, Mga senior citizen diri mangutana unta ug unsay nahitabo sa saad ni Mayor Ondo nga ipang hatag nga P 1,500 every birthday sa nga senior citizen. From Gregorian chant to rap

IN THIS life we cannot help but be versatile. St. Paul himself expressed it so well when he said that we have to be all things to all men. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews, he said. To those under the law I became as one under the lawthough not being myself under the lawthat I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the lawnot being without law toward God but under the law of Christthat I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. (1 Cor 9,20-22) Of course, we have to remind ourselves also, as St. Paul himself had also reminded us, that though all things are lawfulnot all things are helpful. (1 Cor 8,12) Theres always a need for discernment and prudence. This is a doctrine worth keeping in mind, its relevant attitude and skill properly and consistently cultivated and developed. Thats because nowadays we cannot help but contend with a growing variety and complexity of people, issues and situations. Most pronounced these days are the generational and cultural differences, the old and the new, the traditional and the modern. There are also differences brought about by our professional, economic, social and political status, and our many personal preferences in styles and outlook. We have to learn how to handle this condition. Even in our spiritual life, we cannot help but have a great variety of spiritualities, brought about by the different Spirit-given charisms to cope with the different situations of our life. All of these, though, are meant to enrich the one same Church, the People of God that comprise the mystical Body of Christ. They are not meant to tear the Church apart, dividing and isolating people from each other. Our differences and the variety of things are supposed to build and enrich the whole Church and each one of us. And so, we just have to learn to be open to all possibilities while maintaining the core essence of things, which hopefully everyone will recognize to be none other than to have faith in God and his doctrine, to have hope in his promises, and to fill ourselves with the love of God that enables us to love everyone, including our enemies. This consideration has led me to cultivate the need to be versatile without getting lost along the way. In the area of reading and praying the psalms, for example, I was thinking that while traditionally they are set in Gregorian or even in more ancient tones, they can also be set in modern ways, even in what is now known as the rap. Recently, a very young nephew of mine uploaded in youtube a song about the earthquake in Bohol, with a very good Christian message, but rendered in rap. I must say I was moved, not so much because it was done by my nephew, but more because the Christian message can be delivered in rap. There was no irreverence at all.

5 Forever
I DO NOT WANT to live forever. But this desire permeates human culture. Mythical tales of immortals are found everywhere from the Greek myths and sorcerers notebooks to twilight movies and futuristic science-fiction books. As the science of aging progresses, scientists have made tremendous progress in extending human life. From lowering infant mortality rates to creating effective vaccines and reducing deaths related to disease, science has helped increase the average persons life span by nearly three decades over the past century, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). How far will genetic engineering and regenerative medicine take us? No one knows for certain but researchers are narrowing down the places to look for that next fountain of youth. Studies show that physiological change, or developmental inertia, is essential for human growth. Maturation occurs after reproduction. Without that process we never develop, researchers said. When we develop, all the pieces of our body come together and change and are coordinated. Otherwise, there would be chaos. But the body does not have a stop switch for this development. What happens is we become mature at age 20 and continue to change. The first subtle internal body changes of aging are seen in the 30s and become more visible in the 40s. There is a progressive erosion of internal order as a result of developmental inertia. Now scientists are studying Benjamin Button children (the Brad Pitt starrer is a more romanticized vision of the phenomenon). These are actual cases of kids aged 8 years or older who have facial features and skin of a newborn

Man interfering with the weather?

THIS CORNER has noticed the ambition of man to even try to interfere with the weather. Just because man was given intelligence by God does not mean that man will try to usurp Gods own turf. Look at what is happening with the world now: extreme cold in portions of the USA and Canada and extreme typhoon in portions of the Orient. Is it really true that man wants to be like a god? Why? What for? Is it not possible that super typhoon Yolanda is an indicator a message - to tell us to hold our ground? The Bible tells us of an incident when the Disciples were on a boat and Jesus was with them asleep while the boat was rocking about due to strong winds. After waking Him up, they told Jesus that the boat might sink. What did Jesus do? He said with outstretched arms: Be thou still. Immediately, the rolling sea calmed down. And the Disciples remarked what manner of man is He that even the waves obey. Can man do this? Never! It can only be God who can do it because He is the owner. He is the one who made everything. All of humankind would not existed if God did not create us. The word create means to make something out of nothing. This debunks the Big Bang Theory of scientists. How could there be a big bang if nothing existed? For there to be a big bang, there must have been a matter to start a reaction. Man did not know that when we were looking for a way to stop Hitler with his plan to conquer the earth, we accidentally discovered the Atomic bomb. We did not know if more tests on the atomic bomb made the earth tilt somehow. This tilting of the earth towards and away from the sun creates the seasons. There are times when the day is short and the night long, and vice versa. With the drive of man to make bigger bombs, the initial tests must have made some changes in the earths equilibrium. One small movement of the globe can mean very big changes in the planets that compose the whole universe. If we say that the earth is life the circle that we use in school, the full circle is composed of 360 degrees. One degree of the earth can be equivalent to a couple of square kilometres (granting that we use the metric system) in scope. The experiments that the world powers are using can create quite a big difference in nature. Look at what is happening to Canada. There is a feeling that the famous Niagara Falls is starting to freeze. If this is true, there will be an imbalance in the natural course of the environment between Canada and the USA. The imbalance can be far reaching. What do you think will happen to the flora and fauna, the birds, the beasts, the insects, the water-based mammals and the immediate atmosphere? There is even talk that the super typhoon that hit us lately can be man-made. Yes, Yolanda was said to be not a natural occurrence. Of course, this corner finds this claim preposterous and fantastic. How can man be like a god? God is ageless. The oldest age that man attained was 969 years and he was Methuselah. Since that time, man reduced his age little by little. According to insurance statistics, life expectancy is now only 67 yrs, plus or minus. Those who reach older than 67 is living on a premium. How many of us can claim to have a long life? This corner knows of one such person who reached 100 years but expired five days after. What good is a long life when you make your life miserable? I saw my great grandfather, Manuel, during the Japanese Occupation. He was mostly lying down on his bed which he used also as his toilet. My brother Tony was assigned to tend to him. He was always cursing every time my Lolo answers the call of nature. He expired, bless his soul, during the first stage of the American Liberation. Let us just confine ourselves to what is our turf. Let us not make our lives complicated by trying to play god. Even taking care of our lives make us busy enough.

In one of the girls studied, they found damage to one of the genes that causes developmental inertia. It is suspected that mutations are on the regulatory genes on the second female X chromosome. If the gene could be identified and then at young adulthood the expression of developmental inertia could be silenced by finding an off-switch, there is perfect homeostasis and one could be biologically immortal. But researchers do not mean that people will never die. Disease and accidents will still end human life. It is just that one would not have the later years, and remain physically and functionally able. I personally believe we are meant to get old and to die. The research is not intended to make everyone immortal but to help people struggling with the impairments of old age. Alzheimers is one of the scariest diseases now. If the Button kids hold a cure for it, then I hope that scientists could find something focused more on the disease of aging, rather than making you look 28 years old for the rest of your life.

Theres a certain beauty to it, with a beat that is most appealing to the young of today. It sounds cool and its hip. Its fast-paced, short of emotion but it drips with the reverse appeal of the sangfroid, the I-dont-care and challenging kind of stance that mysteriously is captivating. At the moment, most rap is done with inane, naughty and even immoral compositions. But thats precisely the point. We can turn it into something good and useful if it is humanized and Christianized. Theres nothing in it that can take away its rich Christian potential. Obviously, it has its limitations and dangers, as anything done to excess and out of place will always have. But these limitations and dangers do not detract from its becoming a good way to pray. I must say that while I pray my Breviary mostly in plain meditative tone, I also try to do it with the Gregorian chant in my mind. I also tried it in other settings, like soul, jazz and R&B, depending on the mood and the circumstances at the moment, and always with good effects.

This is regarding the Social Pension Fund of the national government for indigent senior citizens aged 77 up. For those who qualify, they are set to receive P 500.00 each per month from the DSWD. Again, from national funds, not from Ormoc City. The measure was deferred because Atty. Mariano Corro, ex-officio SP member as Liga nga Barangay president, had questions. Rama, the proponent of the measure authorizing the Mayor to sign the contract, decided to have it deferred until all of Corros question are answered. Corro is asking how many indigent senior citizens in the city are qualified to receive the P 500 a month pension. He also would want to know if DSWD could indeed fund this pension. It was decided to invite the DSWD and the president of the Ormoc Senior Citizens Association (OSCA) to shed light on Corros queries before the matter is again brought to the table.

PASAR helps Yolanda-affected communities
ISABEL, LEYTE- PASAR Foundation, Inc. continuously supports the families affected by super typhoon Yolanda in this town and neighboring areas. To recall, PASAR donated food packs to barangays in Isabel, Merida and Palompon in its one-month operation. A total of 1,500 food packs were also donated to the Archdiocese of Palo. Trapal were also distributed to Yolanda-affected families in Isabel. A medical mission was also initiated in cooperation with Cebu and Palompon doctors and local government of Isabel. Php 10,000 worth of medicines were donated and the fuel for the rural health unit generator was provided from November to December of 2013. On the other hand, corrugated and plain GI sheets and other construction materials were given to those families badly affected by Yolanda. PASAR Foundation director Ruben Cajigas said they also gave affected families of PASAR employees 16 GI sheets each. Aside from the PASAR employees, they also donated corrugated and plain GI sheets, and nails to families whose damaged houses were classified as type 1. Cajigas added they target to distribute to at least 5,000 households of the 24 barangays in Isabel up to end of January this year. As of press time, they have catered to approximately 964 households. Additionally, they are now on negotiation for the repair of damaged classrooms of elementary and secondary schools in Isabel district. Students and teachers kits soon will also be distributed. THE NATIONAL Youth Commission (NYC) urges the 42,027 barangays all over the country to comply with Republic Act 10632 which allocates budget solely for youth development at the barangay level. This, following the postponement of the Sangguniang Kabataan elections with the passage of Republic Act 10632. According to Section 4 of the Republic Act 10632 known as the Act Postponing the Sangguniang Kabataan Elections on October 28, 2013, the Sangguniang Barangay shall use the SK fund solely for youth development programs until the new set of officials have been duly elected and qualified. NYC has taken notice of recent news concerning the budget allocation for youth activities at the barangay level. It came to our attention that some barangays have already passed their respective budget plans without allocations for youth and youth-related programs, says Undersecretary Leon Flores III, Chairman of the NYC. While the Implementing Rules and Regulation (IRR) has yet to be signed by COMELEC and DILG, we would like to remind all barangays that the law clearly earmarks budget for the youth. Those who so violate or intend to violate such provision should be forewarned, adds Chairman Flores. It is clearly stated in the law that Barangays are compelled to apportion certain percentage of its budget and income to fund activities that will

We would like to highly encourage youth organizations to engage their barangays actively so that youth programs can be implemented strategically and effectively. For now, it is encouraged that the barangays create a Committee on Youth Affairs to be headed by a Barangay Councilor and a Barangay Youth Development Task Force that enjoins youth organizations., Chairman Flores further implores. The NYC also clarifies that the SK has not been abolished. There will be an election late this year or early next year to give time for Congress to pass a legislation that will reform the institution. Should Congress fail to enact such reform law, according to RA 10632, SK elections will still be held using the old system. There is no truth that the SK has been abolished. Flores adds. Cebu expands check-in options for ATR flights

CEBU PACIFIC (PSE:CEB) recently expanded its self check-in services to include all flights within the Philippines, as part of its commitment to enhance passengers airport experience. Passengers on ATR or turbo-prop aircraft flights can now check-in using the airlines self check-in kiosks, strategically located in 20 Philippine airports. In Manila, self check-in kiosks are located between the D and E aisles at the Terminal 3 pre-departure area. Flights using ATR or turbo-prop aircraft include those bound for Caticlan (Boracay), Naga, Busuanga (Coron), Siargao and Camiguin, among others. The self check-in service was previously made available only for passengers on Airbus or jet aircraft flights within and from the Philippines. We are pleased to satisfy the needs of even more travelers, especially since ATR turbo-prop aircraft is often used for inter-island flights. Foreign and local leisure tourists can take advantage of this check-in option, free of charge, so they can breeze through the check-in process and start their vacation sooner, said CEB VP for Marketing and Distribution Candice Iyog. Together with her Mom, Dad, an uncle and his wife and their children, they survived the storm surge by climbing to the ceiling and holding on to dear life. They only had a bungalow, she said. There was a portion of the roof that was not blown away and we took shelter there, she recalls her harrowing experience last November 8, 2013. Nonetheless, she said, after the typhoon ravaged them, she is still thankful that her family is intact. She is also thankful to the assistance that the RTRMF extended to them, enabling her and classmates to finish their review in Cebu. Because of their help, she said, I feel happy, overwhelmed and blessed. She is now a Registered Nurse and currently works for the World Vision as monitoring and evaluation officer. Success is dedicated to lost relatives Another board passer is Quintin Bon Jason or Bon for short. Hes 21 and currently residing at the Lolita Village. He lost his lola, lolo and an uncle to the storm surge. He said they used to live at Brgy. Anibong, where five ships are beached. The ships rammed into houses and crushed residents as it floated with the storm surge. But what was poison to others was manna to them. Bon said that four of the ships shielded their house from the storm surge. His lolo, lola and uncle were not so lucky, however, and died. They also lived at the same barangay. Bon said that after the typhoon, he decided not to continue with reviewing for the exams and not take it. They were hard up. Thankfully, he said, his auntie Sarah Bato who is based in the US decided to help him. She came home to help us and look for lolos body, he said. Bon said he was offering his success to the memory of his dear relatives that parted during the flood. He is now a volunteer for an NGO doing relief work in Tacloban but said he cannot divulge which organization. 6th consecutive year on being on the Top 10 Andre de Veyra, a clinical instructor of the RTRMF, said school authorities are very happy at maintaining their position on the top 10 of nursing schools in the country. We did not expect to have such good showing, he said, but we are Top 5. Its actually the 6th consecutive year that we were on the top 10, he proudly said. Last December, he said, we werent expecting to land in the top 5. The students were having their review when Yolanda struck. Most of them lost hope. Their houses were devastated. Some lost their relatives. Taking the exams was the last thing on their mind, he said. Nonetheless, the RTRMF administration tried their best to help their graduates. They were accommodated at the Cebu branch of their review center and new applications were processed. The RTRMF resumed classes last January 13. The first day was spent on a stress debriefing of their classes. Thanks to the Romualdezes, the school is now repaired and rebuilt, he said, and the students eager to return to their normal lives. Classes are back to normal we are trying to catch up for the school year. We have a rigid and punishing schedule, he added. We kept the faith Meanwhile, Dr. Socorro Gasco, dean of the RTRs nursing department, who is a Yolanda victim herself, said she continued to push on their graduates to take the board exam. She is also a resident of Brgy. San Jose and 16 feet of water engulfed their house. Despite this, we kept the faith. I was the one who continually hounded them, she recalled. I told them to have faith in God. God is good all the time, she told them, as she urged them to have group prayers and group rosaries during their review in Cebu. The traumatic experiences of her students made them tulala. Even while they were already reviewing in Cebu, she received reports that their students were tulala. They would tell her they were not inspired but she would not have that for an answer. You need to try, she told them. We had a student who was just in her pajamas, took a C-130 at the airport and landed in Cebu. It was a good thing that the social welfare workers there knew our review center and turned her over to Dr. Medrano, who heads the Power Development Review Center. Dr. Medrano adopted the unnamed student. She also passed. Of the three who did not make the exams, two were repeaters and the remaining one was from a previous batch who was only able to take the exams on December 2013. Dr. Gasco said that despite their trauma, the 2013 batch passed the exams because of the schools training. They were rough gems when they began, now they are polished diamonds, she said.
