For Information about the Sacraments

Baptism
If you are a parishioner interested in baptizing your child, please contact the Parish Office for further information on the Baptism process and requirements.

Anointing of the Sick

Please notify us (355.1292) as early as possible for the Anointing of the Sick, the sacrament intended for the seriously ill or dying. It is Our Lords special presence and companionship in serious time of need. Anointing may take place in the home, at the hospital or elsewhere and as often as once a month. If someone should die without anointing, remember that the desire to receive is sufficient and the Lord cares!

Reconciliation and First Eucharist

Preparation for children who have attained the age of reason (usually during 2nd grade) is arranged either through the Office of Religious Education or St. Rita Elementary School.

Matrimony

If You Should Experience the Loss of a Loved One

Please call us at 355.1292 If you feel you will be in need, or your loved one has passed, we will assist in making arrangements with your chosen funeral directors; refer you to our liturgy and music directors; and offer you helpful guidelines and a book that will aid in the selection of readings for the Mass or Memorial Service. Areas we can help you with prior to the passing may help in the planning of funeral services. We know that this can be a tough time and we want you to know that your parish is there for you. PLEASE UNDERSTAND we only have one resident priest; sometimes arrangements for another priest may be needed.

Contact the Parish Office upon engagement; at least six months is needed for preparation of this joyous sacrament!

Confirmation
A two-year program for freshman/sophomore age teens. Apply through the Office of Religious Education.

NOTE: Adult applicants for the sacraments should contact the Parish Office.

Anointing of the Sick See adjoining column.

PASTORS CORNER

Dear Parishioners,
In this Sundays gospel passage from Matthew, Jesus counters familiar commandments with his own challenge; for example, You shall not kill becomes You shall not even be angry; You shall not commit adultery becomes You shall not even think about looking! and You shall not take a false oath becomes You shall not swear at all! Whats going on here? The answer is contained in the first couple of lines: I have not come to abolish [the law or the prophets], but to fulfill them. You see, I think we get ourselves into a lot of trouble trying to keep Jesus in the Old Testament. He not only came with a New TestamentHe IS the New Testament. I have met people who think that an Eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth is still the norm to followafter all, Its in the Bible! Im shocked when I hear someone say something like that, because it totally ignores Jesus teaching to turn the other cheek and to give not only your shirt, but your cloak as well. Here, in his new and improved way of living, Jesus is taking us beyond low-life vengeance to the generous New Testament spirit of healing and reconciliation. More than once, I have been approached by zealots who would like me to post (usually to set in granite) the Ten Commandments in front of the Church. Each time, I have responded with Not unless we also post Jesus Two Great Commandments, his Eight Beatitudes, and his Great Commandment: Love one another as I have loved youand even then it would have to be taken up with our Pastoral Council. (No one has ever returned to pursue the proposal.) Do you see where I am coming from on this? I take it as a solemn duty, as pastor, to keep us in the New Testament! If we only stayed with the famous Ten, we would be doing the absolute minimum: dont lie, dont killHELLO! St. Paul tried to teach us what it means to live Jesus fulfillment of the old law and the prophets when he preached living the Spirit and rising above the law. In other words, beyond not killing, we actually go out of our way to promote lifebeyond not lying, we actually promote the embrace of truth. Heres the formula appliedOLD TESTAMENT: Arrest the killer(s). NEW TESTAMENT: Work for restorative justice that educates and heals, so the killing wouldnt have happened in the first place. OLD TESTAMENT PSALM: Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord. NEW TESTAMENT VERSION: Blessed are they who follow the Lord JESUShis new way, his truth and his life. I could never stress it enough, a true disciple knows the Old Testamentbut lives in and for the NEW Testament. I have no time, let alone the desire, to cultivate and form run-amuck Sadducees and Pharisees. They are so 2000 years ago!

Most Sincerely, Msgr. Richard

Making the Lenten Journey: The Stories and Scriptures of Lent

Join us as Bob Hurdworld-renowned composer, performer, liturgist, theologian AND St. Rita parishionertakes us on a tour of Jesus final journey to Jerusalem, using reflection, icons, artwork, and music. The St. Rita Choir will assist Bob as he explores stories and scriptures of the Lenten season. The Lenten season is filled with some of the Gospels most profound and beautiful stories. When proclaimed at Sunday liturgy, Christ speaks to each of us here and now through them: the Temptation in the Wilderness; the Transfiguration; Jesus meeting with the Woman at the Well; the Cure of the Man Born Blind; the raising of Lazarus. We enter into these stories in two waysby seeing ourselves in the characters Jesus encounters, and by seeing ourselves in Jesus Himself as He goes about doing the will of God. The event is open to the public. Donations gratefully accepted. Reception to follow in OMalley Hall. A wonderful way to prepare for Lent! (Ash Wednesday is March 5.)
