U of T has required all undecided and at-risk incoming students to take an information/library class According to Thomas Atwood, U of T literacy professor incoming college freshman lack a critical eye to evaluate information and do not understand the difference between journal and magazines. While their are many deficiencies to their information literacy skills, I have also noticed that their computer and digital skills are also lacking.

Rob Snyder, Assistant Professor and First Year Experience Coordinator at BGSU comments students come to us not understanding the research cycle, how to use databases, how to develop topics and totally lacking the literacy skills required for college research.

What am I supposed to do? What are the questions I should answer? What type of information do I need? What do I really want to learn? What is my topic? What do I already know about my topic? Brainstorming What are some search terms, synonyms, key words, etc. What could be some Subtopics? What are my possible sources. Books, databases, website, periodicals, etc. Which are the best sources

CURRENT : timeliness of info. Is the information out of date? When was the website posted of published? Has the page been updated recently? Do the hyperlinks work?

PURPOSE: reason the info exists What is the purpose of the info.? Does the author make their purpose clear? What is the domain extension (.gov, .edu) Who is the intended audience?

AUTHORITY: source of info. Who is the author/sponsor/publisher./ source Is there contact information? Does the author have credentials? Does the URL reveal anything about
source?

RELIABILITY: content is credible Is the content biased? Opinion? Where does the info. come from? Is the info. supported by evidence? Has the info. been reviewed? Are there spelling, or grammar errors? Can you verify the info. from another source?
