Discussion points: Pre reads were made available electronically - saving University's resources on paper, printing, and mailing costs o Option to print is personal o Laptops and tablets being used more frequently at meetings Helpful to have all the information in one central location If site is accessed from place of business, there may be firewalls in place o Would need to access from personal account Would be helpful to distribute pdf file of combined pre reads via email as well o Could then access file if in an area without Wi-Fi Suggestion to open a drop box for the files in addition to using Web app Scribd Overall consensus good step toward enhanced information sharing President Gast Letter to Lehigh Community September 4, 2013 Topic: Dr. Gast's response to President Obama's recent speeches on higher education reforms focus on affordability and student outcomes Text of letter and talking points were included in pre read documents As ambassadors of Lehigh, Board members should be knowledgeable of the contents Discussion points: Quick response with professional message One size doesn't fit all in higher ed Caution with regards to tests Focus on outcomes Lehigh has good track record Mountaintop Pilot Program Mr. Wolfenden recalled that Dr. Gast spoke to the LUAA Board at the March 2013 meeting about the pilot program planned for the summer months on Mountaintop Campus and her vision for the future of that space. It was announced today to the trustees that a lead gift of $20M was received for the Mountaintop Campus this will be the seed money for future development of space o Plans include a live-in environment (dorms, dining, etc.) Board members then viewed a video that highlighted the various pilot programs and featured the students, both graduate and undergraduate, who worked on projects at Mountaintop over the summer Posters depicting the summer pilot program projects were on display for Board members to view during the course of the day Discussion points: The Mountaintop Campus will be a differentiator creating a space where students and faculty can work together on research projects for a full semester Question on plans for the Stabler land Lehigh acquired o a real estate asset, purpose is yet to be determined o May sell off some portions Latest information on the 150th playing of the Lehigh vs. Lafayette football rivalry 11/22/2014 2

Copies of a drafted brochure (intended for a late October mail date) were provided to Board members. Mr. Wolfenden stated the final version of brochure along with a letter containing a promotional code to purchase tickets earlier than the general public would be received in advance of the November 1 date. Discussion points: Promo code tickets would be available on November 1 o Board members cautioned not to share this code with others Several questions were posed: o Is there a limit as to how many tickets one can purchase using the promo code? o Will there be a location where LUAA Board members would like to be seated as a group? Mr. Wolfenden will approach the 150th committee for answers to posed questions o Additional information will be shared with Board members prior to November 1 Alumni Relations Updates Printed copies of the Volunteer Impact Report were distributed as hand-outs / Board members featured in publication Alumni Bulletin undergoing a revitalization o New editor, Timothy Hyland o Board members will be asked to help shape this endeavor via an electronic survey keep a look out for a message from University Relations Personnel there are a number of positions posted at the current time and also some movement within the department o Robin Flemming '82G, began new position at Moravian Academy this departure afforded the opportunity to create two director positions within Alumni Relations o Ann Coy, associate director of affinity programs, has decided to stay home with young child o Samantha Dutton moving from Lehigh Fund to fill Ms. Coy's position, with a heightened focus on Greek alumni o Mark Ostapenko moving to Lehigh Fund from associate director of regional programs o Jessi McMullan relocating to Houston, TX as a result of her husband's promotion o Mr. Wolfenden introduced new staff member, Jonathan Pelter, associate director, Lehigh Fund heading up the Lehigh Liners (student callers) Founder's Day Recap President Connor asked for impressions of the Founder's Day Ceremony from those Board members who attended. The ceremony was held on Thursday, October 10th at 4:10 p.m. in Packer Memorial Church. Gary Chan '80, parent of a Lehigh first-year student, was appreciative of the opportunity to discuss the commentary of Brenda Martinez '15, keynote student speaker, and wanted to know how the Board, as Lehigh ambassadors, should respond Ms. Martinez spoke of lack on inclusiveness and discrimination on campus o Multi-cultural, sexual orientation, socio-economic, etc. Additional thoughts expressed Steve Rittler: Valid points were made as well as accusations, which is not a productive way to begin a dialog 3

o Student leaders need to take the next step Robert Wolfenden: Lack of published information on a recent 'trigger' incidence (brawl between football players and fraternity members) was due to on-going police investigation Howard Foltz: All Greek councils on campus are working diligently to be as inclusive as possible with Greek life / encouraging multi-cultural options Thomas Spencer: need objective reporting / Lehigh ought to have confidence that its constituents can deal with the matter in a mature and confident way Eddie Ramos: very sensitive to the topic having been a victim of racial discrimination while a student on campus at the time of the Cleary murder o Twitter feeds have been active since Ms. Martinez's speech o This type of climate is not only at Lehigh, but exists across all campuses o What is encouraging is that it is no longer just a black and white issue many other factors / students are fractionalized

Was this the proper vehicle to deliver this content? Free speech There will be discomfort for a while Campus is becoming more diverse Role for LUAA Board and alumni groups at large Flash-point event affords the opportunity to hold conversations/ need to acknowledge Enhance the visibility of our efforts to expand the Lehigh community Exercise influence in a positive manner President Connor encouraged the continuation of open discussion within committees. 10:10 a.m. 11:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Committee Breakout Sessions Lunch Committee Report Backs

Governance Committee Michael Connor reported: Governance committee is striving to enhance the flow of communication between itself and the working committees and vice versa o Changed the structure of its monthly conference calls to include the chairs of the subcommittees o Results have been productive / prompts discussion / will continue this practice All Board members will be invited to join the November 5th governance committee call o Alumni trustee presentation verbal update provided by Andrew Fiala '92 on the topics of the October trustee meetings / details will be posted on the LUAA Board private page LUAA written reports to the trustees have been discontinued trustees did not have the opportunity to read o Face-to-face meetings with a committee of the Board of Trustees will be scheduled in place of the written report o Touch point to increase LUAA Board's visibility with the trustees 4

o Welcome ideas for this meeting send to the governance committee More interaction with VP for Advancement, Joseph Kender '87 o Held a lengthy meeting in New York City with members of the governance committee o Mr. Kender in full support of the goals the LUAA Board has taken on

President Connor, on behalf of the full governance committee, thanked the Board members for their hard work and dedication. Community Committee Stephen Rittler, chair, reported: Committee has three main areas of focus: o Reinvigorate Class Notes section of Alumni Bulletin o Finish Micro-volunteering initiative o Storytelling - partner with alumni communications department to continue this worthwhile project Today's session was spent entirely on the class notes initiative. Mr. Rittler inquired how many in the room served as class correspondents. (3) The follow-up question was how many have ever sent information to their class correspondent for inclusion in class column. (~8) o Those who haven't in the past were encouraged to do so An idea floated for class columns instead of the news bytes that comprise a column publish a deeper look into a special human interest story on a featured alum o Selected current class correspondents will be interviewed to gauge their reaction to this concept /committee members will facilitate the 15-minute telephone interviews Discussion: All correspondents may not agree with new concept, but those who do can run with it / does not have to be uniform Stories captured during Reunion are impressive o Can class columns contain link to the online stories? Cross-pollination of vehicles to communicate the storytelling initiative The online version of the Alumni Bulletin does not include the class columns o Explore virtual platform possibilities Website similar to Pinterest o Alumni could post life happenings, e.g. new baby, promotion o MyLehigh group pages are possibility can't compete with Facebook Could the Alumni Bulletin be published more frequently? o Committee has no control over the publication cycle Graduate Student & Graduate Alumni Committee Thomas Spencer, chair, reported: Committee is seeking ways to engage the graduate constituency to a greater extent in Alumni Relations events and programming. Committee conducted benchmarking exercise on peer institutions Results of research indicate most common model is graduate college based o Each college has own Alumni Relations team and own Advancement team 5

o Graduate students and graduate alumni have higher affiliation to their academic departments Steer away from class-year specific events / graduate students may not complete studies with the same classmates they started with o Instead, look to plan a departmental event every five years Part-time graduate students can be treated differently than full-time doctoral students o Full-time graduate students are more interested in the University as a whole Committee considering the possibility of two new affinity groups 1. Graduate Student Affinity Group 2. Graduate Alumni Affinity Group o Proposed conducting a survey to the constituents as to what they would like to see offered o Kathleen Hutnik, assistant committee chair and graduate life director, will hold a meeting with the associate deans of the colleges to discuss this possibility Greater web presence for 'Alumni & Friends' on each college site was noted as a need o Template exists College of Education

Discussion: Children of graduate alumni not treated as legacies in the admissions process o Perhaps LUAA Board committee can look into this Is there anything for international graduate students on campus over the Thanksgiving holiday? o Good opportunity to provide outreach o Program being planned for the Tuesday before Thanksgiving / there may be other efforts within the Office of International Affairs, Student Hospitality organization Parents & Families Committee Scott Wojciechowski, chair, reported: Committee's intent is to expand the Lehigh community by being more inclusive of parents and families. What value-added experience can we achieve within the four-to-six year window for parents and families of Lehigh students? Committee completed a benchmarking exercise o Majority of parent programming intent is development oriented o Exemplar institutions chosen for deeper dives: Cornell, Penn, Johns Hopkins, Washington & Lee Tori Aitchison '92, director of Lehigh's parent's program, attended the committee's session o Lehigh's Parent's Committee is purely philanthropic o Ms. Aitchison is the gift officer for approximately 200 families with potential to give o Collaboration exists between Advancement and Alumni Relations Suggestion going forward with regards to marketing of 'Alumni Events' (may be an unintended barrier of sorts) Use instead 'Lehigh Events brought to you by the Alumni Association' (broader appeal) Potential to co-sponsor events occurring on Family Weekend , which is planned by the Advancement events team o Alumni Relations staff not currently involved Discussion: Flood of attention on parents of first-year students then communication drops off significantly 6

Mr. Wojciechowski is residence life coordinator at Gettysburg College and works with sophomores o Agrees there is great emphasis on orientation of first-year students o It was also shared that the majority of attendees on Family Weekend are parents of first-year students Perhaps the two big fall weekends, Homecoming and Family Weekend, could be combined o Would expand LUAA outreach o Share resources / build coalition When Board members attend events - can they be made aware of parents in attendance to facilitate a personal outreach / great touch point o Should be able to share attendee list which can indicate parents of current students

Association of Student Alumni (ASA) Jacob Silber, president, reported: The ASAs seek to keep Lehigh traditions alive, appealing to students as important members of the Lehigh family for life. Looking for ways to connect alumni with students / fall short of alumni support Sampling of eventso First-year Student Alumni Rally o Lehigh Lafayette Spirit Week collaborating with all student government bodies in support of each other LU Dance Marathon (8 hours) raising awareness as well as funds for children with cancer Carnival Lehigh Lafapalooza Student/Alumni Barbecue family-friendly event planned for Friday, November 22, 4:00 6:00 p.m. on the UC front lawn (graduate students will be included) Goal is to offer this as free event Produced video now available via tumblr Students and staff holding white boards stating "What we love about Lehigh" Whatweloveaboutlehigh.tumblr.com Young Alumni Council (YAC) Joseph McLoughlin, president, reported: The YAC held a two-hour meeting following the Volunteer Leadership Forum on August 24 and will hold a full meeting on Saturday, October 12. Lehigh Ambassadorship Program peer outreach to young alumni where they are, check in and gather contact data for directory, inquire about post-graduate experiences, ask what events would draw them back to campus Discussion: What method will be used to connect the YAC members with peers? o Will use current data to begin with identified, engaged young alumni with a common thread (geographic, major, affinity involvement) Greek Alumni Council (GAC) Howard Foltz, president, reported: Alumni feel Greek system was the best when they were on campus. Current administration strongly supports Greek life o Funding continues to be put into improvement of Greek houses o University now owns all the houses o Student councils (IFC and PanHel) are very strong GAC strongly believes chapter houses purchased for Greeks by Greeks must remain Greek o Historical markers have been placed on all Greek houses stating the year the house was established and the chapter inhabiting the house at that time System Wide Assessment Committee recommends need for a chapter in next expansion effort (fall 2014) for those students of Jewish heritage o One aspect of multicultural need not met by current Greek system o All formerly recognized chapters can become eligible for re-instatement during expansion effort Greek Alumni Council along with the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs has scheduled monthly Webinars for the fall season rather than holding one meeting o Topics include: Expansion, Advising, Residential Services o Live attendance at Webinars has been poor o Sessions are archived for later viewing Full GAC meeting planned for February 8, 2014, 10:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m. followed by attendance with current students at Lehigh basketball game Mr. Wolfenden commended Mr. Foltz on his exceptional leadership as president of the GAC as his term has been completed Leadership transition is underway Legacy of Leadership Ann Coy, associate director of affinity programs, reported on behalf of Thomas Healy, Jr. '85, president: Legacy of Leadership Affinity Group is comprised of all former LUAA Board members and alumni trustees.
