The 138th verse in the second Surah of the Quran is completely mind-blowing. This verse is often translated as, "The religion of Allah - and who gives better religion than Allah? And, to Him, we are worshippers. Although this interpretation is not wrong, it's also not completely right. The word 2345 means "color" or "dye" - not "religion." Look at how differently this ayah reads if we ponder about the concept of color: Color (as dened by Wikipedia) is a visual perceptual property - something that you can use to identify one thing from another, using your sense of sight. The manifestation of a color on something has become a part of life - the variety of color in our life tells us a lot about ourselves. We buy clothes and cars, we design our homes with paint and decorations, we even shop for certain grocery items - all with color in mind.

In the second surah of the Quran, Allah tells us that He doesnt focus on what color skin you have, or what color outt youre going to wear, or what color youre going to paint your room. He wants to you to know about the color of your faith. People fret and stress over what color car to buy, what color paint to use - how much do we invest when it comes to the color of our faith?

Just like we can tell what color shirt a person is wearing by looking at it, or what color car someone drives by seeing it, can someone tell that we have a relationship with Allah when they look at us? Are our manners, character, internal and external states reective of the fact that we cherish our relationship with, and appreciate, Allah? Does our relationship with Allah dye us with a "color" which identies us as worshipers?

Check the rules, entry forms, and ballots to determine what must be submitted prior to Showdown. Submissions and accompanying entry forms will be mailed to msashowdown.knoxville@gmail.com For the following competitions, please be sure to write your names ONLY on the entry forms and NOT the physical submitted pieces itself (to remove any potential bias when being judged): Writing, Poetry, Art, and Photography. Please be sure to include your full name and school name in your email for submission! Submissions will NOT be accepted after 11:59 pm EST on the day of the deadline. If deadlines are extended, this information will be posted online at www.msashowdown.com. Participants are responsible for checking website for any deadline changes.

general guidelines

UTKMSA reserves the right to disqualify any MSA Showdown participant for inappropriate behavior or reasonable suspicion of dishonest participation. Any participants who enter a competition late are subject to disqualication to be determined by the judge. Participants must be wearing their nametag at all times and will not be allowed to enter event area without proper ID. Dress code for both brothers and sisters should be loose tting and not transparent. Feel free to wear your schools MSA shirt if available. All submissions and accompanying entry forms must be sent to msashowdownknoxville@gmail.com before the submission deadline, unless otherwise stated.

We highly recommend that your school print and bring at least one copy of this packet, as it contains all rules/scoring/entry forms. It is your responsibility to check the website for the most up to date versions of this packet.

University of Tennessee MSA Showdown, April 4-6, 2014 Knoxville, Tennessee I understand and agree that the Muslim Students Association at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and the Muslim Community of Knoxville, of which I am a participant/volunteer, or organizer, involves certain risks and that regardless of the precautions taken by the organization, some bodily injuries may occur. The Muslim Community of Knoxville (MCK) has been serving the Muslims in the Greater Knoxville area since the early 1980s. MCK is registered as a non-prot organization with the State of Tennessee. The MCK works in close cooperation with other Muslim organizations in the area, most notably: the Islamic Education Foundation of Knoxville (IEFK), the Annoor Academy of Knoxville (AAK) and the Muslim Student Association (MSA).
