Roscoe the Rooster

Roscoe the Rooster made Takoma Park his home for 10 years, staking his territory on the lawn in front of and behind the apartment houses near Marks Kitchen on Carroll Avenue. Roscoe roamed the city and had many neighbors protecting him. Unfortunately, Roscoe was involved in a hit and run in February 1999. A lifesized statue of Roscoe the Rooster, crafted by local artist Normon Greene, stands on a pedestal in front of the clock tower in the center of downtown Takoma Park. Roscoe will make special appearances throughout the Guide to highlight important information.

Volunteer Spotlight: Jason Miskiri

Jason Miskiri is a long time resident of Takoma Park, MD. Born in Georgetown, Guyana he moved to the Takoma Park area and resided on Maple Avenue. He played basketball in local Takoma Park Recreation Department leagues such as the Y.E.S. League and Moonlight League. Jason was a constant participant in all recreation activities such as camps, volunteer work, and sports. Jason attended Montgomery Blair High School and played basketball for the school which led him to making rst team allcounty during the 93-94 season. Jason then went on to play basketball with the Montgomery College Knights (Rockville Campus) in 1994 and was named an All American JUCO recipient in 1997. After a successful two years at Montgomery College, Jason joined George Mason University where he was a 1st Team All CAA conference member and 1st Team all regional player. During his tenure with George Mason, the Patriots had their rst NCAA tournament appearance in 10 years. After graduating from George Mason University, Jason performed at the Chicago pre-draft camp and was named one of the top 75 players in the nation prior to entering the 2000 NBA Draft. Jason has had NBA performances with the Charlotte Hornets during the 1999-2000 seasons; He has also played with minor league basketball teams in the IBL, NBDL, and the CBA. Jason is now the proud owner of Society Restaurant and Lounge in Silver Spring, MD. He opened his restaurant in March 2012 and has had outstanding reception from the community and surrounding areas. The slogan for his restaurant is Good Food, Good People, Good Will. Along with owning a restaurant Jason has started an Adult Basketball League and has a summer camp for kids ages 7-17 in the summer. His summer camp allows 10 kids from the Takoma Park area to participate for free; depending on their families nancial status. Jason has made a commitment to return to his old neighborhood and help out wherever he is needed. Last summer, he sponsored the Takoma Park Recreation Departments Y.E.S. Summer Basketball League. His efforts allowed the program to purchase new uniforms, equipment and cover the cost for ofcials. He takes pride in sharing his journey with the youth associated with the TPRD as it gives him the venue to express how sports and recreation builds character and responsibility. Jason hopes his success as an entrepreneur sends the message to youth that sports isnt the only way to make it!
