Ipoh, Perak: 67 dengue deaths have been reported so far in the government state even as the total number of cases shot up alarmingly to near 10000 mark. 912 people have tested postive for dengue, an increase of over 95 per cent in five days from the previous tally of 446 reported on september 14 last year. 42 dengue cases were reported in the week ending 18 Jan, 2014, 208 cases fewer than the previous week. Now with standing the lower number, the risk of dengue transmission remains high and everyone should continue to observe the Mozzie Wipeout. Residents with plants in vases should change the water and scrub the inside the vases every altenative day to prevent mosquito breeding said one of the residents in our area.

Reported dengue cases in Ipoh Garden , 2010-2013

This graph reported in the January 2014 that dengue is having an increased impact on the Ipoh Garden with historically high levels of cases in Ipoh Garden over 9000 cases in 2010-2013, the largest outbreak in our area . About 75% of these could be confirmed through laboratory tests with dengue 1 and dengue 4 being the predominant serotypes. As many cases are not reported the actual incidence rate was probably much higher. For almost 5 years this problem arise and no one have taken the action to cure the dengue in our housing area. Day by day it is affecting more residents and getting worst . There are lots of cases and this have became a big problem for us . We cannot sleep , eat or do anything peacefully because it become a major issue for us .

According to our record for dengue 2010 review, the number of cases of dengue fever continued to rise in 2010 in half way. In a number of reported cases and death have reached a record. This is the case in Ipoh Garden where the MOH reported 10000 cases and 67 deaths. As there is neither medication nor vaccine, controlling dengue relies solely on controlling the mosquito that spreads the disease. While conventional control methods such as the use of insecticides can have an impact locally, for a limited period, gaining overall control of the problem remains a huge challenge. Aedes aegypti has been present in Ipoh for several years. In 2011 there were 27 cases of locally acquired dengue cases in a week. A survey of our residents suggested an infection rate of 5%, indicating a serious risk of transmission. Despite, an intensive control programme in 2012 the number of cases then roses to 63 cases . The victims confirmed by MOH are- Mohd Shaid( 47) and Priyanka (25) in our area who dies on September 5 and September 9 respectively. The victims put under the suspected death cases include, Shukri Ali (28), a contractual employedd with the MOH, who was working as a contract worker and was the first death reported last five year on September 1. We report there are also worst cases that develop in our area called the dengue myocarditis. 13 year old boy who developed bradycardia and hypotension a day after recovery from dengue fever. His electrocardiogram during the bradycardia showed a junctional rhyrtm with a rate of 50 beats. This is the first reported case of sinus node dysfunction following dengue infection. Previously healthy 26 year old Chinese boy was referred from a private hospital because of bradycardia. He was admitted with history of high fever for 12 days after admission, he started developing hypotension and plasma leakage . He recovered from shock on day 5. The other victims near our housing area under the suspected category are Sunita (35) and a Dr Chan from general Hospital both of whom died on June 3 last year at the general Hospital according to their family . According to my information, Oxitecs lead Aedes aegypti product, OX513A, has been released in the first ever outdoor trial of GM mosquitoes in Asia. The first trial studies the longevity and dispersal of Oxitecs male sterile mosquitoes and compared them to wild ones.

Some 6000 OX513A males were released in an area near Bentong, Pahang State with 6000 wild males. The trial was carried out by Malaysias Institute of Medical Research, a result of a long collaboration between Oxitec and Malaysiaa Ministry of Health. Malaysia already has several firsts in working with Oxitec to evaluate Oxitecs RIDL@technology for dengue. The first dengue endemic country to import this strain, the first to conduct semi trials , dedicated workshops on risk assessment and risk communication and extensive consulation with numerous committees, the public and NGOS Public engagement is important for all such trials and media discussion has been ongoing. An independent survey conducted by a leading Malaysian newspapaer showed that Bentong residents were happy with the governments plan to release GM mosquitoes to overcome dengue. Malayisa like many contries has seen a sharp increase in dengue in the past decade. In 2010 not only in our area but also throughtout Malaysia, the number of cases rose by 11% and there were 334 deaths. Controlling the insects that transmits the virus between humans is critical and the Malaysia government is evalutating Oxitecs technology as part of its intregated vector Management programme.
