Seventh Sunday In Ordinary Time

No Amateur Competition!
Have you been watching any of the Winter Olympics? What every competition has in common despite their variety is passion and intensity! No one makes it to this level without it. The chiseled bodies of the athletes, the precision of their movements and the laser focus of their concentration exposes the thousands of hours of practice, hard work, and personal sacrifice that has preceded the Olympic competition of which they now take part. All of the participants, even the ones who come it dead last, are some of the most extraordinary athletes in the world! They have to be or they never even make the team. Christianity and Olympic competition have a few things in common. While one requires an extraordinary belief in ones own abilities, the other requires an extraordinary confidence in the power of God to exceed their abilities. One requires a great passion for the sport, the other a passion for the cause of Christ. One requires a profound trust in the coach, the other a genuine love for the Lord. One requires great dedication to the task at hand, the other an unwavering commitment to the mission to be accomplished. One may require skiing on snow or skating on ice, the other requires walking on water and following in the footsteps of Jesus. One involves pushing the body beyond the limits of what has ever been achieved; the other involves achieving what is humanly impossible. It is in this context that we must read the words of Jesus in todays Gospel from the Sermon on the Mount: Turn the other cheek, Love your enemies, Pray for those who persecute you, and Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect! The average person hears these words and concludes that Christ is calling on his disciples to do what is not humanly possible! Well, it is NOT humanly possible. Christianity is not natural. Its supernatural. True disciples are not intimidated by the high demands of the Gospel because they know that God never asked them to live it apart from his supernatural grace and power. The first order of business for the disciple is simple: Surrender! The with Saint Paul they say: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:13). Fr. Patrick A. Smith 2014
