PRAYER BEFORE READING HOLY SCRIPTURE
Illumine our hearts, O Master who loves mankind,
with the pure light of Your divine knowledge. Open the
eyes of our mind to the understanding of Your goel
teachings. Implant also in us the fear of Your lessed
commandments, that trampling down all carnal desires,
we may enter upon a spiritual manner of living, both
thinking and doing such things as are well-pleasing unto

O Christ our God, and to You we ascribe glory, together
with Your Father, who is from everlasting, and Your all-
holy, good, and life-creating Spirit, now and ever and unto
ages of ages. Amen.
PRAYER OF A STUDENT

Preparation for Holy Confession 89
HOLY CONFESSION
And when he had said this, he breathed on
them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy
Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are

Te gif of Gods forgiveness is received through private
prayer, corporate worship, the disciplines of prayer and
fasting, penitential services and above all through the
sacrament of Holy Confession.
Te value of Holy Confession is twofold. First, through
Preparation for Holy Confession 90
this sacramental act of the ordained priest and the
Christian believer we have the assurance of divine
forgiveness, according to the words of Christ (Jn 20:23).
Secondly, Holy Confession provides the opportunity to
talk about ones deep concerns, to receive counsel and
to be encouraged toward spiritual growth, all of which
are universally recognized as extremely benecial to
personal life.
Holy Confession is appropriate whenever an Orthodox
Christian feels the need for it. It is also a part of our total
spiritual preparation during the fast periods leading up to
the great feasts of Easter, Christmas, the Falling Asleep of
the Teotokos and the Feast of Twelve Apostles. However,
Holy Confession is eecially necessary: when a serious sin
has been commited; when a habitual sin has overwhelmed
a Christian, or when a Christian has stopped growing
spiritually and needs a re-examination of priorities.
We confess our sins to God and the power of forgiveness
is Gods. However, the gif of Gods forgiveness, although
assured, is not magical. It does not automatically spare us
from spiritual struggle the continual vigilance against
evil and the unceasing warfare against sin. Holy Confession
will bear fruits in the Spirit only when the believer hates
evil, uterly rejects sin and patiently cultivates positive
habits of the life in Christ. So you also must consider
Preparation for Holy Confession 91
yourselves dead to sin and alive to Christ Jesus Do not
yield your members to sin as instruments of wicked-
ness, but yield yourselves to God as those who have been
brought from death to life. (Rm 6:11, 13)
How can one prepare for Holy Confession? Preparation
for Holy Confession is a prayerful examination of feelings,
thoughts, words, acts, atitudes, habits, values, priorities,
goals, direction and way of life. Tis prayerful self-
examination includes not only the personal religious life,
but also family relationships, social aivities, job conduct,
business dealings, political commitments and even
recreational pursuits, because our entire existence should
be lived in the light of the Holy Spirit. We ought not to
condemn ourselves, but to arm our true selves in Christ
who has given us access to Gods mercy and forgiveness
and who has taught us to live for Gods glory.
Pray and think about your confession over several days.
Ask God to help you perceive your sins and to make
a thorough confession of them. Sometime before the
sacrament of Holy Confession, oer selected prayers from
the following Confessional Prayers.

Because we Christians living in this world are caught up
in earthly aivities, aictions, trials and temptations
and because we are so easily overcome by sinful passions,
God gives us ways by which we enale ourselves never to

forget Him. He provides methods for us to keep ourselves
ceaslessly prepared to meet Him at His coming. He oers
rules of spiritual and physical discipline for us to praice
so that we can remain constantly alive to His presence and
power in our lives and so be ready to receive Him when He
gives Himself to us for holy communion.
Te general disciplines for preparing for holy communion
are the disciplines of Christian life itself. Tey are praices
which keep us alive to God, the aions which open our
minds, hearts and bodies to the presence of Gods grace
and power in our lives. Tey basically include:
regular participation in the Churchs liturgical worship
regular rule of personal prayer
regular rule of ceaseless mental prayer
regular praice of fasting and abstinence
regular reading of the Bile and spiritual writings
regular confession of sins (and thoughts, feelings,
temptations, and dreams) to our pastor
regular giving and recieving of forgiveness of sins with
the people in our lives
regular donations of money to the Church.
regular sharing of our time, energies, and possessions
with others, and constant striving not to sin in the
smallest way in routine aivites of our everyday life,
work and personal relationships.
Preparation for Holy Communion 113
Te word regular is repeated and emphasised because
these spiritual praices and aivities must be done
according to a rule (regula, kanon, pravilo). Tey must be
done regularly with conscious atention and discipline.
Tey cannot be lef to whim, caprice or feeling.
What a person does in regard to liturgical worship,
personal prayer, fasting, reading, contributing and serving
will be shaped according to the conditions of his or her life.
It will be dierent for each one according to age, strength,
availale time and personal capabilities. Te saints say
that rules of praying, reading and fasting should be brief
but frequent, simple, pure, uncomplicated and keepale.
Tey should be determined and ealished with spiritual
advice and counsel in ways which permit them to be easily
included within the real possibilities of ones actual life.
In addition to the Christians general spiritual discipline,
each believer must make specic devotional eorts
in preparing for holy communion. Tese eorts will
also dier from person to person. Tey will include a
set number of specic prayers and readings, a specic
practice of confession and reconciliation with others
and specic good deeds, such as almsgiving and nancial
contributions. Tey will depend on the conditions of ones
life. A monastic person or clergyman, for example, will
normally have a longer rule of specic preparation for

me, a sinner, but have made me worthy to be a partaker
of Your holy things. I thank You, for You have permited
me, the unworthy, to commune of Your most pure and
heavenly gifs. But, O Master and Lover of mankind,
who for our sakes died and rose again and gave us these
awesome and life-creating mysteries for the good and
sanctication of our souls and bodies; let them be for
the healing of soul and body, the repelling of every
adversary, the illumining of the eyes of my heart, the
peace of my spiritual powers, a faith unashamed, a love
unfeigned, the fullling of wisdom, the observing of Your
commandments, the receiving of Your divine grace and
the ataining of Your kingdom. Preserved by them in Your
holiness, may I always remember Your grace and live not
for myself alone, but for You, our Master and Benefactor.
May I pass from this life in the hope of eternal life and so
atain to the everlasting rest where the voice of those who
feast is unceasing and the gladness of those who behold the
goodness of Your countenance is unending. For You are
the true desire and the uneakale joy of those who love

me, eecially for the communion with Your most pure
and life-creating Mysteries. I pray You, O gracious Lover
of man, preserve me under Your protection, beneath the
shadow of Your wings. Enale me, even to my last breath,
to partake worthily and with a pure conscience of Your
holy things, for the remission of sins and unto life eternal.
For You are the Bread of Life, the Fountain of Holiness,
the Giver of all Good and to You we ascribe glory, with the
Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of

A PRAYER OF ST. SIMEON THE TRANSLATOR
Freely You have given me Your Body for my food, O You

O my Creator, but instead enter into my members, my

Cleanse my soul and sanctify my reasonings. Make rm

the fear of You. Always protect, guard and keep me from
soul-destroying words and deeds. Cleanse me, purify me
and adorn me. Give me understanding and illumination.
Show me to be a temple of Your one spirit and not the
home of many sins. May every evil thing, every carnal
passion, ee from me as from a re as I become Your
tabernacle through communion. I oer You as intercessors

Hear my prayer, O LORD, Give ear to my supplications! In
Your faithfulness answer me, And in Your righteousness.
Do not enter into judgment with Your servant, For in
Your sight no one living is righteous. For the enemy has
persecuted my soul; He has crushed my life to the ground;
He has made me dwell in darkness, Like those who have
long been dead. Terefore my spirit is overwhelmed
within me; My heart within me is distressed. I remember
the days of old; I meditate on all Your works; I muse on
the work of Your hands. I spread out my hands to You;
My soul longs for You like a thirsty land. Selah Answer
me eedily, O LORD; My spirit fails! Do not hide Your
face from me, Lest I be like those who go down into the
pit. Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning,
For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which

When you read the Goels, Christ eaks to you; when
you pray, you are eaking to Him.... Te Bile should be

with the living Word Himself to feed our love for Christ,
to kindle our hearts with prayer and to provide us with

When one reads the Holy Scriptures, one should apply
everything to oneself and not to someone else. As a Book
uniquely inspired by God and addressed to each of the
faithful personally, the Bile possesses sacramental power,
transmiting Grace to the reader, bringing him to a point
of meeting and decisive encounter with God.

But let not your fasts be with the hypocrites; for they
fast on the second and fh day of the week (meaning
Monday and Tursday); but do you fast on the fourth
day and the day of Preparation (meaning Wednesday and
Friday). Neither pray as the hypocrites; but as the Lord
commanded in His Goel, thus pray:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Ty name. Ty
kingdom come. Ty will be done, as in heaven, so on earth.
Give us today our daily (needful) bread, and forgive us our
debt as we also forgive our debtors. And bring us not into

evil); for Tine is the power and the glory for ever. Trice
in the day thus pray.

But although our Lord distinguished the four kinds of
prayers to be oered, individually and at dierent times,
as we understand, nonetheless He shows as well by His
own example that they can also be included together in a
perfect prayer. Tis He does in that prayer which we read
that He poured out at great length toward the end of the
Goel according to John (Ch.17).
