Just before we all took our short (but too long for some!) Christmas break we had a good old BBQ by the beach to say see ya later to training for 2010. It was a great day all round, heaps of amazing food & a few friendly games of volleyball Our Mini Steppers joined in as well!

Dear Members, family and friends Happy New Year and welcome to the first edition of Fresh Air for 2011. The Step into Life Team wish you and your family everything of the best for the coming year. I am very pleased to announce that Step into Life is now a member of Fitness Australia, the governing body of the fitness industry. Many of our Franchisees will now proudly display the Fitness Australia Business membership logo.

We hope everybody had a safe & relaxing Christmas & New Year. While ours included many meals of delicious food & all those sweet treats (were not scared to admit it!!!), we are now re-energised & excited to be back training you & ourselves to make 2011 the year of a healthier, more confident us & you. This Sunday the 23rd we are heading down to Gnotuk Ave, Aspendale for a few beach games, as well as celebrating our 7th Year as Step Into Life Keysie! The fun starts at 1, feel free to bring any drinks & nibbles but we werent planning to make it our usual BBQ so probably best to eat beforehand. Australia Day is coming up & hopefully everybody will put their Public Holiday to good use! As it is on a Wednesday we will still run our usual 6am, but we are combining the evening sessions so there will only be a 7pm kickboxing class. What a perfect opportunity to make up any classes you have missed! Please check all the dates in the events page and free them up. Also, if you have any ideas to throw at me of what should be included in the ball that would be a great help as we organise our first one, thank you.

There is a human trait that occurs every New Year and it starts with some over indulgence, then as a result of overindulgence, the range of promises made to oneself and New Years resolutions happens next and then hopefully comes the action steps. Step into Life are experts in handling the action steps. Our qualified and highly trained trainers will help every client to turn those promises into action via a suitable training regime. I encourage you all to have a new years goal chat with your trainer and let your trainer know what you would like to achieve in 2011. Do you recall that amazing feeling you have after a good session with Step into Life? The session where you feel invigorated and where you have sweated and felt the endorphins flow? At all Step into Life sessions we add training points to your training club tally (you can see your total on your fortnightly performance report). Points gained are a measure of your commitment to your training. Ask your instructor to help you set some time lines for your goals. Where were you born? Deniliquin, New South Wales What is your current profession? SME Product Line Manager for MYOB Australia What sport have you been involved with during your life/best achievement? Regional representative in my Junior Basketball days. What is your favourite naughty treats? I have one cheat day per week and it almost invariably involves the consumption of this food. Cmon spell it with me: B-A-C-O-N. What primary and secondary school did you attend? Lots of schools. Deniliquin South Primary, St Michaels Primary, Deniliquin High and Melbourne Grammar. What is the nicest thing anyone has done for you?. Every day, my wife tolerates my farting, bad habits and BO and still love me unconditionally! What is your goal for the next six months exercises or other? New year = new goals. Ill take a new job/new opportunities, a sub-18 minute 4km run and another 4-5kgs off. Interest and hobbies? Movies, reading, AFL (Go Bombers!!), Interaction Design, driving and Facebooking at the same time and all forms of technology that make life easier. What is your favourite session and what results have you seen since starting SIL? Definitely Cardio. Its the best feeling when effort is automatic rather than exerted. Since starting SIL, Ive lost over 13kgs, dropped nearly two inches around my waist and neck and am have almost rid myself of man-boobs!!!

5 Steps to a healthier you in 2011
1. How would you rate your current health? When was the last time you visited your doctor and had your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels tested. How does your weight compare to this time last year? Do you exercise regularly? Do you smoke? How much alcohol do you consume? Once you have an honest appraisal of your current health, fitness and nutrition habits, you can then begin setting more relevant and realistic goals for the year ahead. 2. Set some goals! Health, fitness and nutrition goals should firstly be as realistic as possible and secondly specific. Write down your goals and assign a time line and a plan of action in regards to achieving these goals. Set a series of shorter-term goals that ultimately lead to a larger long-term goal. Most importantly reward yourself for reaching each milestone. 3. Evaluate your diet and make changes accordingly. This might be a matter of simply cleaning up your diet. For example reducing saturated fats and increasing your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables. However you may have specific health issues such as high cholesterol or diabetes and enlisting the help of a professional might be your best plan of action. Avoid trying to make too many dietary changes at once. This can be overwhelming and will most likely result in you resorting back to old habits very quickly. Instead, make a few small sustainable changes at a time. Once these have been established add another few and keep going until you are satisfied with where you are. 4. Get active! It is impossible to achieve health without exercise being a regular part of your lifestyle. Start slowly and build. Exercising with a friend or a group of like-minded individuals is often extremely helpful in maintaining motivation levels. Once exercise becomes a habit you will wonder how you ever survived without it! Perseverance is the key. 5. Reduce stress! Stress is a major part of many of our lives today and unfortunately it is extremely detrimental to our health. Finding ways to reduce stress is essential to long term health and wellbeing. Exercise is a fantastic stress relief. Other ways to reduce stress include mediation, yoga, enjoying some simple time out e.g. a long hot bath.
