Q1:

Consider the tapered beam with a hole drilled at one end.
The beam is under constant torsional moment as shown.

a) State the mathematical problem and boundary conditions.
b) Using analytical methods, calculate tip angular rotation. (You can use symbolic toolbox of
MATLAB or Mathematica).
c) Plot ( ) z
max
t and ( ) z I
p
for L z s s 0
d) Develop finite element equations for a constant diameter torsional shaft of length
e
L using
direct method. Assume linear elements (2 nodes). For variable cross sections, use the
diameter at the middle of the element (needs interpolation form nodal values).
e) Solve this torsion problem using 3 elements. The elements are formulated as to (d). Use
only pen-and-paper, demonstrating how the finite element formulations are carried on (i.e.,
assembly, etc) .
f) Use a computer program. Submit it with your homework. Take 6, 18, 36 and 72 elements
along the axis. Using this program:
- Plot ( ) z I
p
of each element for L z s s 0 and for every different no. of elements.
- Plot the rotation angle of the tip against element number.
- Plot ( ) 3 /
max
L t and ( ) L
max
t against element number.
- Compare your results with the analytical solution. Calculate relative errors at each
node using the formula
lValue Theoretica
Value FEM
error =1 and express as percentage in
%xx.x format.

Bonus points apply for (using your own codes, not using ABAQUS, etc):
- Plotting deformation plot in 3D (the deformed state overlayed on undeformed state)
of the problem.
- Plotting color-contour plot of the axial variation of maximum shear stresses.

Q2:

Solve the planar truss system sketched below using the finite elements.
Use formulations derived in class. Examine FEM books and internet resources for additional
formulations if required.
Take material properties as GPa E 200 = and 3 . 0 = v
The spans are given in the figure, and a =300 mm.
The cross sections are 200 mm
2

The external Load parameter F =10 kN

Explicitly define the topology matrix of the system.
Calculate and state in your report the stiffness matrix for elements 1,2 and 3.
Solve the system to find nodal displacements, forces and stresses in each member. List these
values.
Submit your FEM code as an appendix to your report.

Bonus points apply for (using your own codes, not using ABAQUS, etc):
- Plotting deformation plot (the deformed state overlayed on undeformed state) of the
truss.
- Plotting color-contour plot of the member stresses.

PS: Formatting MATLAB outputs and codes in a proper manner, other than simple copy-
paste is essential for writing a good report. Visual layout and neatness is important!
