REPORT # 2

Constituent structure and Constructions

Adrian Saavedra tule Cristian Osvaldo Franco Cereth Moreno Juan Fco.

INTRODUCTION In this work we will talk about how the heads and the modifiers in a sentence are grouped together insides clauses with an specific order, You can change the structure of a sentence without changing the whole meaning or the sense of it, or you can change the words places to say another idea totally different .So lets go to play with some constructions of sentences. CONTEXTS Transposition: in a sentence you can move words in a different slot in a clause, without changing the context.

Example: I read a book every month. Every month I read a book. Or you can replace them. (Substitution)

Example She always does her maths homework. Emma always does all her homework. We used an ellipsis to skip or avoid some information.

Example: This morning I went to watch a movie, [ ] it was great, we are omitting the words the movie, we can say just it was too. Coordination

In a sentence you can talk about two or more things of just one subject for example. And this is called coordination in a sentence.

Example: Im tallandI live in Mexico; this two ideas are talking about just one subject, with the and you joined both clauses. Its necessary to know the difference between the coordinate and a complex sentence!!!!!!!! In a complex sentence you separated maybe more than two ideas of one thing but they have to depend of the next phrase. But in a coordinate sentence you just put or write a and to join both ideas but without depending of another. Examples: Complex. When I finish to do exercise, I will eat some fruits. Coordinate. He plays football on weekends and goes to school on week.

Constructions

Phrases combine to produce clauses. They combine in different orders. There are some copulas like : Copula ascriptive, equative and locative. The three of them helps us to identify well the differences in different kind of sentences for example: The copula ascriptive helps to ascribe a property to an entity. (Edgar is kindness) kindness is a property from Edgars. The copula equative it looks mostly as a superlative or comparative. (Roberto is the best student.) The copula Locative it indicates where a subject is located. (Raul is in Las Vegas Nevada) Copula means join so if we can see the three copulas have a specific subject and then they talk about it in a different way depending of the context.

OPINION In my opinion I could say that it is to entangled that at first when you are learning English the teachers tell you that in a sentence you have: verbs, nouns, predicate etc., then another teacher tell you that you can named that as a modifier or heads, ok I still understanding but after that they say that it also

some modifiers or heads can be moved to another place and a lots of pieces that have too one single sentence is confused to me. This structures are to helpful to discover and learn different ways that you can make use of words and how to make different sentences. CONCLUSION We know that we can change part of the phrase by doing SUBSTITUTION OR ELLIPSIS to skip or avoid some information, but still not changing the meaning of the sentence. Another thing we can use to CORDINATE AND COMPLEX. The complex is just when you add something extra to the sentence. The coordinate is something you use to connect the sentence.
