Apu trilogy this trilogy definitely takes us back to the time when movies were like mirrors of our

society. Every event, change , celebration, desperation, revolution had a role on the silver screen. Injecting life into such movies were genuine scripts , artistic film makers and honest actors. The naked beauty of such movies was their unembellished depiction of reality. This might be vapid for today's generation but genuine movie lovers connoisseurs would remiss in their duty if they dont appreciate such art. !atching such movies also help us get an understanding of the sociopolitical climate prevalent in those times and ofcourse it gives us a much needed break from the mainstream commercial movies which are filled with recurring stories and glorified imagery. "ot only is this a series that leaves an indelible mark on your minds, but also it makes u wonder how such a gem of art got lost in oblivion. "eo realism as a film making techni#ue isn't visible today in India. $ather panchali and the subse#uent films received world wide acclaim and it practically introduced Indian cinema to the world. Its a real shame that Indian film makers today couldn't carry on the legacy left by %ay's cinema . Each and every scene in the movies speak volumes about %ay as a film maker. &eticulously planned and carefully depicted, it gives us an indication about how much %ay was involved in the process . 'e believed in taking copious notes and drawings before shooting anything.(ou feel that whatever he does for his cinema he does it out of his love for the art of film making. Its because of this religious attitude towards film making that he was able to deliver on the promise of realism in the apu trilogy without transcending reality. %ay's genious lies in the fact that he didn't compress )ibhutibhushan original story in a single movie. This is a testimony to %ay's inclination towards detail and symbolism because *change+ has such an integral part in the series. 'e consciously chose to make it into three parts reflecting different periods of time in apu's life , childhood, adolescence and then adulthood which also reflects *change+. %ay does e-emplary work in giving attention to innocence, curiosity, liveliness, motherly affection, death, education, struggle, love and humanism. %ay's humanism has been an important element in all his biographies and this is one of the things that sets him apart. 'is movies shows society, people and emotions in their most raw crude form .And that is why his movies st rekindles our touch with humanity. .or those of us who had the good fortune to be born in /0 century %ay's cinema is a curtain raiser oh how far indian society has come and how much India has achieved since independence. There was a time when virtues like independence, freedom of thought and e-pression, employment, education or even a good meal were impossible. !e take them for granted but it took a lot of sacrifice and struggle to reach where we are today. %ay's cinema does very well in making us think that social change in India was not only important it was a slow process and even though the reality today isn't comparable ,one must always celebrate to be born in a free and unprejudiced society. There are certain elements of the series that need special scrutiny as they are special and act as an instant mental stimuli. Train1 The train as a metaphor has been used in several movies .'arry $otter, inception are prime e-amples. In pather panchali nobody can miss the iconic shot of the train coming through the fields. 'ere its a symbol of modernity 2change3. In Aparajito its a symbol of oppurtunity. And finally it becomes a tool for Apu for escaping reality in the world of apu. %ay is impeccable with his use of the train as a symbolic instrument. 'e uses it well to highlight Apu's state of mind and the reality around him. In the end the train is a powerful life metaphor, people will come in your life , make you laugh happy eventually leaving you. )ut the train2life3 doesnt care. The journey of life will continue. The tragedy 4 This aspect of the trilogy is distracting. Apu's life was full of hardships.)ut %ay and the actors do a convincing job to not let the viewers get caught up in the sadness.Ama5ing how a man continues to go on with life even after suffering so many lows. This is one aspect of the movie which has ambivalent meaning because associating beauty with sadness is ambiguous ,almost a parado-. )ut then again life itself is a tragedy , we die in the end.

Ending on the road1 This is a fascinating feature . Every movie ends on the road. The road has a consciousness in the series and its symbolic of time. The road promises a better future, a fresh start and it symbolises moving on. &oreover it has been shown in the movie that stagnation is dangerous. 6ocial change1 .irstly Apu's family had to migrate because of their circumstances. %ural migration is nothing new today but it was a big deal then. Then Apu renounced his family profession , priesthood. 'e no longer wanted to live that life as he feared he would end up like his father . 'e embraced western education and science as he believed that education will change his life. &ind boggles when you reali5e that this was %ay's debut film and he had no formal training. 'e didn't project the india that we could see in The bollywood movies of that time like that of %aj 7apoor's. %ejecting glit5 and glamor and embracing realism as his spirit guide %ay chose the untrodden path. All he had was his talent and a dream. 'is vision was clear as a crystal. This manifested in the making of the Apu trilogy and the world witnessed his genius.
