Part 1 SHORT ANSWERS (20 total points)

Give two (2) MARC format subject headings to each of the following five items. Tell me why you used those subject headings. 2 points for the subject headings, 2 points for your explanation. 1. Elvis Religion : The Cult of the King. The cult of Elvis Presley has, since his death, become ever more pervasive in American culture. From Graceland to Las Vegas, from fans to impersonators, from

novels, films and popular music to websites, outsider art and tabloid conspiracy theories, Elvis Religion explores this frequently bizarre phenomenon and investigates how the King of Rock 'n' Roll became a god-like figure. 600 $a Presley, Elvis, 1935-1977. 650 $a Celebrities $z United States. The personal name was the most obvious choice for this entry. I also searched cult and found the heading, cult of celebrities. I was directed to use Celebrities instead of cult of celebrities, which indicated a geographic heading as well, which is why I added United States. 2. NBA Coaches Playbook : Techniques, Tactics, and Teaching Points. Takes you into the practice sessions and sideline huddles with detailed Xs and Os and more from the game's best at maximizing performance on the court. Let the likes of Phil Jackson, Avery Johnson, and many other head and assistant coaches provide you with new insights to benefit your own team and individual players. 650 $a Basketball, coaching. 650 $a Coaching (Athletics) $z United States. I started by searching basketball, and I came across the first heading. I believe this works since the book provides insight into coaching strategies for the sport. I then searched coaching and found the second heading, which indicated a geographic subheading. 3. LIS Career Sourcebook. This book provides an overview of key career stages and strategies, and identifies for each the best information resources to help readers develop a successful LIS career. 650 $a Library science. 650 $a Career development. The subject heading Library Science was pretty easy to find, since this is a book about library information science. I then started searching for career-related terms; career development is appropriate since this book is about how to be successful in this particular field. 4. Benjamin Franklin : A Life. Presents a life of the American statesman who was a diplomat, postmaster, inventor, and revolutionary and played an integral part in the founding of the

United States. 600 $a Franklin, Benjamin, 1706-1790. 650 $z United States $x History $x Revolution, 1775-1783. When I searched, Franklin, Benjamin, several headings came up. Since Ben Franklin was alive from 1706-1790, I chose that heading. I then wanted to show that the book pertains to Franklins involvement in the American Revolution and its history, which is why I chose the second subject heading. 5. Practical Sampling. Practical Sampling provides guidance for researchers dealing with the everyday problems of sampling. Using the practical design approach Henry integrates sampling into the overall research design and explains the interrelationships between research and sampling choices. The style is concise and narrative; mathematical presentations are limited to necessary formulas; and calculations are kept to the absolute minimum, making it very approachable for any researcher. 650 $a Sampling. 650 $a Research. 650 Science $x Methodology. I have used the term, sampling, since the book is about the issues that researchers have with sampling. I also used research, since the book is about researchers dealing with sampling issues. When I search research, methodology was listed as a related term. I clicked on that, and it indicated that this heading could be used as a subdivision under the name of a discipline. Exercise 73 in Unlocking. 010 022 100 245 245 260 $a 84-26314 $a 039921258x? $a DePaola, Tomie, $d 1934$a Tommie dePaolas Mother Goose. $a Mother Goose $a New York, NY : $b G. P.

Putnams Sons, $c c1985. 300 500 600 650 $a 127 p. : $b ill. ; $c 29 cm. $a Includes index of first lines. $a Nursery rhymes. $a Childrens poetry. (too broad?)

Assume the following: my 245 and subject headings are correct. Error 1 The entry for 101 should not have a dash in it. Error 2 The varying for of title entry should be labeled 246, not 245. Error 3 New York does not need the state abbreviation. Error 4 There should be an $a in front of the subject heading, Childrens poetry. Error 5 The ISBN (020) should read $a 0399212582 Error 6 The 300 field should list $b col. ill, not $b ill. Error 7 The first 600 field should be 650, since it is not a personal name. Error 8 In the 245 field, Goose should not be capitalized. Error 9 The 022 field should be 020. Error 10 In the varying form of the title, (246 field, Mother Goose), the g should not be capitalized.

Additional errors.
