January 2014 Dear Members and Friends, The Saskatchewan Orff Chapter will be sponsoring an Orff Childrens Day

on Saturday, March 15, 2014. We invite you and selected Grades 4, 5, and 6 students from your school to participate in this event. This fun-filled and musically enriching event will take place at cole Elsie Mironuck Community School, 18 Wakefield Crescent, Regina, Saskatchewan. This years theme is The Ramayana". The Ramayana is considered to be one of the greatest Hindu epics in Sanskrit literature. It describes the journey and adventures of Rama who after being exiled into the forest for 14 years, returns to take his rightful place as King of Ayodhya. An abridged version of the story will give the participants a good understanding while depicting it through music using Orff instruments, through dance in Kathak style and through drama with shadow puppets. This Childrens Day will be a memorable one with a culturally rich experience delving into ancient and modern art forms that will come alive on March 15th. This session will be presented by dynamic educators Rosa Haynes, Sharon Meredith and Marlene Hinz. Please use the following guidelines when selecting students to participate: 1. Select students in Grade 4,5, and 6 enrolment (maximum of 5 and minimum of 2) 2. Students should be comfortable in four areas of the Orff process (singing, movement, speech, improvisation and instrumental playing) 3. Students must have a positive attitude, be willing to take creative risks, and be responsible. 4. Students must be accompanied by a teacher. *Please note that you must be a member of the Sask. Orff Chapter in order to enroll your students in this event. To acquire a Orff memberships please contact Cathy Graham, our membership secretary, at (306) 934-2447 or visit http://www.orffcanada.ca/membership.htm. Students will be accepted on a first come, first served basis with a maximum enrolment of 60 students. The fee is $30 per child, which includes a t-shirt. Teachers who bring students attend for free. The fee for teachers who do not bring children to participate, but would still like to come and observe the Childrens Day is $15. Enclosed, you will find a registration form and covering letter for parents. Please make as many copies as necessary. Deadline for student applications is March 8, 2014. Any forms that are not fully completed with fees cannot be accepted. Dear Parents: Your child has been selected to represent our school at the Orff Childrens Day on Saturday, March 15, 2014. Childrens Day is an opportunity for Grade 4, 5, and 6 students and their teachers from across the province to come together for a day of creative experience of music, dance, and drama within the Orff context. Please note the following details regarding the day: Registration will take place from 8:30 9:00 a.m. at cole Elsie Mironuck Community School, 18 Wakefield Crescent, Regina, Saskatchewan. 1. Lunches and coats may be left in designated areas before proceeding to the registration table. 2. Please provide your child with a bagged lunch for the noon hour. One snack will be provided during the day. If your child has any food allergies, please provide a suitable snack in addition to the bagged lunch. 3. Students should be dressed comfortably for movement with running shoes or dance slippers. 4. The days activities will culminate in a sharing session presented by participating students. Family and friends are welcome to attend this session, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. 5. The day will end at 3:15 p.m. Please arrange for your child to be picked up at that time. This event is for music, drama, and dance teachers and selected Grade 4, 5 and 6 students. Childrens Day provides an invaluable multi-faceted Arts Education learning opportunity for students, as well as excellent professional development for teachers. The Orff Childrens Day is a curricular enrichment experience that ties together the music, drama, and dance strands of the Arts Education Curriculum.
