Subject: Materials Technology Wood

Topic(s): Practice Dovetail

Pupil Year Group: Second Year

No. of Pupils: 18

Lesson No. 5 of 18

Length Of Lesson: 80 minutes

Date: 11/01/2014

Time of Lesson: 9:00

1. STATEMENT OF THE PUPILS PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

I am aware that the previous knowledge of the pupils is that they can identify and carry out the safe use of
a number of hand tools: mallet, chisel, tendon saw, screwdriver, clamps, and planer. They can identify
and operate a number of power tools, including: scroll saw, pillar drill .They can recall the safety
guidelines attached to hand tools and to power tools. They can identify many species of woods including
hardwood and softwoods. They have experienced a number of varied joints in timber; however the
cooperating teacher has asked me to place emphasis on the dovetail joint. They have a weak
understanding of seasoning timber. The cooperating teacher has also asked that I revisit the topic of
timber finishes. Having spoken to the cooperating teacher I am aware that the pupils have limited
exposure to design and design briefs and terminology in relation to design. I feel design is an integral part
of the materials wood technology and according to the syllabus 3.1 project design and realization, 3.1.1
design briefs/appraisals and 3.1.2 the process of design. Therefore, I will explore and discuss this topic in
great detail with the pupils. The pupils also have a good understanding of the design process. Pupils also
recognise courses in Letterfrack and its location. Pupils now list the terms in relation to design process,
brief, analyse, research, investigate, working drawings, evaluate.

2. RATIONALE FOR THE SELECTION & STRUCTURING OF SUBJECT MATTER

AND FOR THE METHODOLOGY

Having introduced the pupils to a new brief (project): construct an item for housing a bird and
adding a constraint to the birdhouse: Must incorporate the dovetail joint to the project, we will begin
todays lesson with a practice dovetail joint. This ensures pupils have a good knowledge of the dovetail
joint and doing a practice piece will gain significant hand skills before applying it to the bird house
project.

3. AIMS

The aims of this lesson are

Pupils to recognize the dovetail joint and its uses.

Pupils to be able to duplicate dovetail joint from a working drawing

Pupils to be able to distinguish the difference between the tails and the pins

Pupils to be able to quote the recommended ratios for softwood and hardwood dovetail joints

To evaluate each pupils ability to mark out a dovetail joint

Pupils to demonstrate the correct methods when cutting out the dovetail joint

4. LEARNING OUTCOMES & CORRESPONDING ASSESSMENTS

Learning Outcomes (LOs)

Assessment of LOs

At the end of this lesson the pupils will be enabled

(Note: each LO has an assessment. Include a variety

to

of types.)

Identify a dovetail joint

Question the pupils during the lesson and

presentation

Recall the common use of a dovetail joint

Allow and encourage pupils to look round

the room to locate dovetail joints

After viewing the presentation and

examining the working example pupils will
be questioned

After viewing the demonstration pupils will

and where it's located

Distinguish between dovetail pins and

dovetail tails

Accurately mark out a dovetail joint from

map out their own dovetail joint

working drawing.

Quote

the

different

ratios

between

After viewing the presentation , dovetail

square and gig pupils will distinguish
between the different ratios

After viewing the demonstration on cutting

out the dovetail pupils will proceed to cut
out on their own

softwood and hardwood when constructing

a dovetail joint

Apply the correct method when cutting out

a dovetail joint
