Lesson/Topic Plan Course: Math Unit: DISNEY Date: 2013/11/29

Learning Outcomes: Shape and Space General Outcome:, use direct or indirect measurement to solve problems.) 1.SS.1 Demonstrate an understanding of measurement as a process of comparing by: identifying attributes that can be compared, ordering objects, making statements of comparison, filing, covering or matching(CN.PS.R.V). Assessment: BLM5 Focused Observation Form/ BLM6 Daily observation Form Connection to Last Lesson: Our Disney theme will create unity within a long period of time. Bringing in characters and fun activities from 3 Disney movies creates a fun atmosphere in the class. Activating Strategies: Preparing For Learning First we would talk about what happens in the movie Brave, can anyone tell me who the main characters are and what they are known to do in the film? We would have previously discussed as a class the topic as there would be a voluntary dress up day for costumes or outfits relating the movie. I would be trying to get them to talk about how Merida is an Archer so we could tie in our own bow and arrows. Acquiring Strategies: After this I would get them to line up on a rope I laid down for a start line. Then on 3 I would get them to pull their Q-tips back and let them go! After this I would hand out string and have them get their scissors for they could cut the string at the length from the rope to their Q-tip with their name on it. If this isnt right for this class we could always use out feet to measure out the distance and or Bear counters depending on the distance of the Q-tips. Applying Strategies: If using the rope we would then categorize in a way the students chose best fit on the board taping them up so we could compare the differences. If choice was to use feet or a certain object to measure then on a piece of paper they would write down their answer so we could compare in the same way. Extending Lesson: If a large time frame is allotted I would take children outside and take turns using the larger PVC pipe Bow to compare the distances of the first small bow to the larger one. For this we would measure in someones feet.

Learning Resources: Q-Tip Bows, Scissors, Rope, indirect form of measurement i.e (string, bear counters or feet), Larger PVC bow. Different Ways of Learning: Logical Mathematical- Using a form of measurement to compare one or more objects. Visual/Spatial- Having the physical forms of the arrows to measure and see an understanding through the visual representation of manipulative. Bodily/ Kinesthetic- Using a Q-Tip Bow and a PVC Bow. Verbal/linguistic- Write down all findings in their math Journal as an after activity to explain what they learned. Musical- Playing Scottish music. Naturalist- Going outside to shoot our larger Bow and Arrow. Interpersonal- Working with the class to figure out the differences between the distances. Intrapersonal- Using the body to create a hands on measuring activity. Interacting and using body to complete activity.
