Modern Tragedy
Raymond William
What difference Raymond William has tried to point out between Tragedy and Experience in the chapter Tragedy and Experience. The very first chapter goes on with these comments of Williams;

We co e !o !"#$e%& '& #(& "o#%). I! *) #( * e%*#!e e+,e"*e(ce- # 'o%& o. /*!e"#!0"e- co(./*c! o. !1eo"&- #( #c#%e *c ,"o'/e .2
!e tries to point out the difference in meanings of various definitions of tragedy in accordance with different ages. "n fact# in his own views# the definition of tragedy in $ristotelian age and the definition of tragedy in Eli%abethan age is &uite different from the definition of tragedy we come to 'now in ()th century. *any roads are the many definitions of tragedy in modern life. Williams explicates his own experience while negating the old concepts of tragedy and says;

I! 1#) (o! 'ee( !1e %e#!1 o. ,"*(ce)3 *! 1#) 'ee( #! o(ce #(% o"e $e(e"#/.2

o"e ,e")o(#/

This is what the writer seems to say or discuss in detail; the personal experience of tragedy and the conventional mode of tragedy found in literary pieces of past centuries.

4I )#5 # !e""*.&*($ /o)) o. co((ec!*o( 'e!5ee( .#!1e" #(% )o(2

e( #(% e6e( 'e!5ee(

+o the cause of tragedy lies in the loss of communication. "n modern times the life has become so busy and so fast that a gap of relation and the loss of communication is becoming visible day by day. This intention of Williams has been described &uite lucidly in the very first chapter of modern tragedy. The writer refutes all the old concepts of tragedy as he says;

4A( #c!*o( o. 5#" #(% )oc*#/ "e6o/0!*o(- # *(*($ %*)#)!e"- # '0"(e% o0! .# */&- # '"o7e( c#"ee"- # ) #)1 o( !1e "o#%.2
$re not the tragedies. !e claims that the above mention ob,ects have been named as tragic elements in past but now the essence of tragedy has been changed. -asically# the writer has tried to point out the old traditional tragedy of boo's and the new concept of experimental tragedy of his own age. Raymond Williams defines the meanings of modern tragedy lying not only in death and suffering or response to death and suffering but also in a particular 'ind of event or response to that event imbued .filled/ in traditional sense. "n short we can say that in the very introductory chapter the writers aim is to differentiate in the use of the word tragedy in common life and the occurrence of the word tragedy in the boo's of literature.
