through listening and responding to a folktale and learning a dance to traditional Indian music, based on traditional Indian folk dance movements. Objectives: Students will locate India on a globe. (World History/Geography IIA) Students will listen to and discuss a folktale from India. (Language Arts IA, IC,) Students will identify the moral or lesson of the folktale. (Language Arts ID) Students will follow multi-step oral directions. (Language Arts IB) Students will learn and perform a dance to a folk song from India. (Music I) [Utah Core I2a, I3a,d, II3,a,c, III4a,b] Materials: The Tiger, the Brahman, and the Jackal Any Indian folk music ( I use a song called Nakata) Globe or world map Instructional Procedure: Show the children the globe or map and ask if anyone can locate India. Assist the children to locate India on the globe or map. Discuss physical characteristics that we can find by looking at the globe or map, i.e. climate (relation to tropics and equator), amount of rainfall, vegetation, mountains, etc. Show the children the folktale and remind them that folktales are usually trying to teach us some kind of lesson or explain the natural world. Ask them to listen and try to figure out which kind of story this is and what the lesson is or what part of our world it is trying to explain. Read the folktale to the children. Discuss with the children what the moral of the story is or what it is trying to explain. Continue the discussion briefly on any other appropriate topics, i.e., how this relates to Indian culture, similarities to other stories, what a Brahman is, what a jackal is, etc. Play the folk music selection for the children. Ask if they are familiar with this kind of music. Discuss similarities and differences with other types of music. Tell the students they will now learn a dance to this music. Teach the dance as follows:

Nakata (2nd grade) Step F on R 1 (hands clap overhead), step L together 2 (hands to prayer under chin), hold 3, 4, head pushes straight R, L, R, L on 5-8. Repeat. R heel out, L knee bends to side 1 (R arm straight out, L arm bent in to chest, arm parallel, middle fingers touching thumbs), feet and hands together 2. Reverse to L 3, 4. Repeat total of 8 times, 4 to each side, moving slightly back on each step. Rock forward and back R, L, 4 times hands on hips. On 4th rock, only rock forward close together and hold. Repeat starting with L. Clap, paddle to R, R hand pushing straight out, L pulling, bent in opposition, both arms parallel to floor, thumbs up, 8 counts. Clap and repeat to L.

Go back to beginning and repeat all until music ends. Feet together, hands in prayer and bow.
Have the children practice until they feel comfortable. Break the class into two groups and have them take turns performing and being audience members.

Assment: Check for understanding during story by asking questions about the meaning of the story. Observe that all children are participating during dance instruction, practice and performance. Ask various children to point out India on the globe or map at end of class. Ask children to retell favorite part of the folktale.
