proposal. Logistics leaders, transportation/shipping companies, grocers/ distribution companies and FSCJ began to explore the possibility of a bachelors degree in Logistics as early as spring of 2011. Together they explored the necessary skills of graduates when entering the workforce. Higher education is key to helping our students succeed in the 21st century economy and to grow jobs in Florida, said Governor Rick Scott earlier this year. In November 2012 Gov. Scott announced a $10,000 bachelors degree initiative for eligible students to earn more economical bachelors degree. The proposed Logistics bachelors degree to be offered by FSCJ falls in line with Gov. Scotts initiative. Our goal should be that students do not have to go into debt in order to obtain a [bachelors] degree nearly all of our state colleges meeting this challenge puts us closer to achieving that goal for our students and families, said Gov. Scott. Pending approval from SACSCOC, the program will begin in Fall of 2014. Initially, it will be offered through a selective admission process to a limited number of qualified students. FSCJ will also offer baccalaureate degrees in Financial Services, Early Childhood Development and Human Services in fall of 2014. For more information about the Bachelor of Applied Science in Logistics degree, call 904-633-8109.

The Florida Board of Education approved FSCJs proposal for a Bachelors degree in Logistics. The new degree will complement the existing 10 bachelor degrees FSCJ offers to Northeast Florida.

Graduates of this degree will be management-ready, prepared for positions in warehouse management, logistics management or coordinators and operations management, according to FSCJ Interim President W. Holcombe. The degree also opens the doors for career

enhancement in the field of logistics and for those who earned certificates or associate degrees in supply management. Regional transportation industries, logistics industries, FSCJs educational partners and the Division of Florida Colleges wholeheartedly supported the new degree

Open Mic gives Kent Campus students a platform to display talents

By India Sugar and Diana Riner Guest Writers

Once a month, the Student Government Association at FSCJs Kent Campus hosts an Open Mic for students to showcase their talents to their peers. Open Mic events create a welcoming environment on campus where students are encouraged to step out of their comfort zone to share, socialize and collaborate with others. During Open Mic, students take the stage to play music, read poetry, sing and dance. Kent Campus held their second Open Mic on Tuesday Nov. 13. They had a great turnout. Ten students performed and they attracted an audience of more than 25 people. Some of the students performed Have some news? Tell us about it!

more than once. I really enjoyed it! I might even play my saxophone next time, gleamed Marquis Roundtree, a student. The first Open Mic at Kent Campus was held in October and featured a special guest, the host and producer of NPRs State of the Re:Union - Al Letson. Letson is a Jacksonville native with many artistic talents, one of which is writing poetry. He and some other student poets and musicians helped the SGA make Open Mic at Kent Campus an undeniable success. The next Open Mic at Kent Campus will be held Dec. 3 on stage in the G-Building near the caf. All students are encouraged to join the fun, especially if you have some music, writing and dancing to share.

Students enjoyed seeing the different skills and abilities of their classmates at the Kent Campus Open Mic.

The great Merry Christmas debate is on

people dont celebrate Christmas. Or maybe they are Jewish and celebrate Hanukah. But are we honestly going to ignore the biggest holiday of the season by including it in the phrase Happy Holidays because we are afraid somebody might get mad? Deal with it. Christmas is not about the tree and presents like the Grinch originally thought. But its not only about love and family like the people of Whoville showed the Grinch. It is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. That may not be a popular statement, but thats ok. I deal with things that offend me all the time and I keep my mouth shut. I wont apologizing for saying I am a born-again Christian. I am offended by so many of the things we have allowed in our society. Yet, I dont have people saying sorry to me for any of these. So why should we apologize for everything we do? Unless it is illegal or immoral of course. So Merry Christmas! Maybe not from the paper, or the school, but from me. I hope you realize what this time of year means to me, and millions around the world and why we would be offended by people being offended by the phrase, Merry Christmas. I guess I may not be allowed to explain all the details of the true meaning of Christmas, but go watch A Charlie Brown Christmas and let Linus tell you. They werent afraid of offending people in 1965 when the show first aired.

EDITOR-IN-CHIEF SUSIE BRYAN ASSOCIATE EDITOR TYLER LAMAY

By Susie Bryan Editor-in-Chief We live in a society where people are willing to jump on each other over the smallest things. You cannot turn on a local channel without seeing multiple commercials for different law offices. Law offices are necessary, but not when we are suing each other over the dumbest things. People have to publically apologize for giving their opinion these days because not everybody may agree with it. We are a sensitive nation now. Every little thing we do could step on somebodys toe, and we are paranoid of offending anybody; even by doing things that have been done for hundreds of years. This includes saying Merry Christmas. Dont get me wrong, I understand

Catching Fire and its stars catch rave reviews

By Susie Bryan Editor-in-Chief these people that she is in love with Peeta and to stop the uprisings, or President Snow will kill her family like he said he would if she failed. Peeta, however, really is in love with Katniss, but is willing to go along with her faking being in love with him in order to save Katniss family. By the end of the Victors Tour, uprisings and fighting in the Districts are even higher. President Snow, with the help of new Head Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee, have a plan; eliminate as many previous Hunger Games winners as they can in order to reestablish the power of the Capitol. This would also eliminate Katniss, and the hope of an uprising. Every twenty-fifth Hunger Games is known as the Quarter Quell. When the Hunger Games was created, they wrote something to be read each Quarter Quell that would make it more special. This year, the twist is that the tributes would be selected from the existing pool of victors from each district. Being the only female victor from District Twelve, Katniss must go back into an area. book. Little details were kept. Seeing a book you love come to life so well is a special thing. But the main reason it was so successful wasnt the elaborate CGI, or the beautiful costumes, or even dialog that matched that of the book. It was Jennifer Lawrences portrayal of Katniss that caused the audience to be left speechless. It is hard to portray the internal struggle of that character. From worry about her familys safety, to her romantic relationship with her friend Gale, to her need to protect Peeta and her conflicting romantic feeling with him, and of course the desire to defeat the Capitol, the facial expressions of Law-

rence were incredible in portraying all these emotions. As a character, Katniss is strong and brave, but has moments of fear and doubt. Lawrence portrayed both of those sides so well, proving her acting chops. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire will no doubt become one of, if not the biggest film of the year. Fans of the books will be overjoyed, and those who have not read the books will be intrigued to see where the next films take the story. To be clich, two thumbs up. But to be the true Hunger Games fan that I am, I would say Id give this film the three-finger salute of District Twelve. It was truly amazing.

Students and volunteers push for more food drives

By Raymond Wisecarver Guest Writer Since November 2012, Food 4 Students has distributed over 28,000 lbs. of food items to increase awareness of food insecurity among college students. Food 4 Students (F4S) mobilizes community partners, donors and volunteers to eradicate hunger. The final distribution was at Kent Campus on Nov. 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Everyone with a student ID was encouraged to come to the parking garage where they were greeted, signed in, and oriented to procedures. They were allowed to take 50 items, but no duplicates. The limit is put in place to ensure theres enough to go around. However, anyone who came during the last hour would be permitted to take as much as they can carry. As participants walked from stand to stand, they were presented with a wide variety of items; from canned goods to disposable cameras. Its a great opportunity to serve a group of hard working folk, said Sandy Aguilar, founder of F4S. I saw that college students were an underserved community. This was a great adventure. When the club formed, they were working with only donations of nonperishable items like beans, rice, spaghetti, sauce, canned fruits, and veggies. These humble beginnings eventually led to thousands of pounds of items arriving from sponsors. Many volunteers and students are upset that the distribution had to end. But Kent Campus is no longer sponsoring the space for distribution. We shouldnt assign blame said Loraine

Dugan, an empathetic volunteer. We cant get the food to the people who need it, thats what it boils down to. Some are still hopeful because the club is still being supplied. If space were to be allocated, and if students and volunteers

are willing to donate their time, even more students could be reached. It has been a wonderful adventure. With the opportunity we would do it again, laments Aguilar.

Turkey Bowl strikes up fun for FSCJ

NBA 2K14 competition

Photo by: Greg Roper Video game competitions are very popular at North Campus.

By Greg Roper Photo Editor The long-awaited NBA 2K14 Tournament was held from 1:00p.m. until 3:00p.m. upstairs in the E-Building of North Campus on Nov. 19. The best of the best arrived with victory on their minds to compete for two movie tickets to Regal River City Marketplace Stadium 14, and for the ultimate bragging rights. The crowd knew how vicious the tournament was as they watched Keyon Anthony using The Miami Heat to play against Kyle Clark and the Los Angeles Clippers during Round 2. The round ended with Clark as the winner with the final score of 62-55. Keyon Anthony had the skills to control The Miami Heat, but Kyle Clarks expertise on using the Los Angeles Clippers was too much. Its the team Im comfortable with, said Clark, it wasnt surprising. We all have our ups and downs said Anthony, if I wouldve practiced, I wouldnt have lost. I dont like to lose. North Campus is well known for hosting fierce video gaming tournaments throughout the term. For information about the next gaming tournament, contact North Campus at (904) 766-6500.

The annual Turkey Bowl gives students the chance to get to know each other outside of the FSCJ classrooms.

By Jessica Geraci Copy Editor The annual Turkey Bowl, held at Bowl American on Beach Blvd., organized by student life and leadership, brought excitement, competition, and camaraderie on Nov. 22. Usually held during the spring, this event occurred in the fall so that students could bond during the chilly weather, according to Kurtson Boulware, the Downtown campus student life activities advisor. Over 30 students participated. Many

had their own rules about bowling a strike. Competition is good, said Boulware. Student life has organized many activities this semester, but I love being with everyone outside of school, said Brandon Diggs, a Student Ambassador. The night was full of painful excitement as Stephanie Smith, a student worker and volunteer, took a spill in the lane. Hanging with friends and colleagues is great, but falling was my least favorite part of the night, said Smith. Students are eager for the next Turkey Bowl.
