Computer keyboard key explanations

When talking to tech support or to other people about keyboard commands, web pages, and command line commands, you may hear such things as forward slash, backward slash / backslash, and caret. Many times this can be confusing for users unfamiliar with each of the symbols found on a keyboard. Below is a chart that can be used to quickly identify keyboard keys. Keep in mind that your keyboard may not have every key listed in this chart. bjhbjhbk Shortcut Keys WINKEY WINKEY + F1 WINKEY + F3 WINKEY + D WINKEY + M WINKEY + SHIFT + M WINKEY + E WINKEY + Tab WINKEY + F Description Pressing the Windows key alone will open Start. Opens the Microsoft Windows help and support center. Opens the Advanced find window in Microsoft Outlook. Brings the desktop to the top of all other windows. Minimizes all windows.

Undo the minimize done by WINKEY + M and WINKEY + D.

Open Microsoft Explorer. Cycle through open programs through the taskbar. Display the Windows Search / Find feature.

WINKEY + CTRL Display the search for computers window. +F WINKEY + R WINKEY + Pause /Break key WINKEY + U WINKEY + L WINKEY + P Open the run window.

Open the system properties window.

Open Utility Manager. Lock the computer and switch users if needed (Windows XP and above only). Quickly change between monitor display types. (Windows 7 only)

WINKEY + LEFT Shrinks the window to 1/2 screen on the left side for side by side viewing. (Windows 7 ARROW only) WINKEY + Shrinks the window to 1/2 screen on the right side for side by side viewing. (Windows RIGHT ARROW 7 only) WINKEY + UP ARROW WINKEY + DOWN ARROW Shortcut Keys Ctrl + 0 Ctrl + A Ctrl + B Ctrl + C When in the side by side viewing mode, this shortcut takes the screen back to full size. (Windows 7 only)

Minimizes the screen. Also, when in the side by side viewing mode, this shortcut takes the screen back to a minimized size. (Windows 7 only)

Description Adds or removes 6pts of spacing before a paragraph. Select all contents of the page. Bold highlighted selection. Copy selected text.

Aligns the line or selected text to the center of the screen. Open find box. Italic highlighted selection. Aligns the selected text or line to justify the screen. Insert link. Creates a hanging intent


Underline highlighted selection. Paste. Cut selected text. Redo the last action performed. Undo last action. Quickly create a bullet point. Change the font. Increase selected font +1pts up to 12pt and then increases font +2pts. Increase selected font +1pts.

Decrease selected font -1pts if 12pt or lower, if above 12 decreases font by +2pt. Decrease selected font -1pts. Insert a cent sign ().

Insert a character with an accent (grave) mark, where <char> is the character you want. For example, if you wanted an accented you would use Ctrl + ' + e as your Ctrl + ' + <char> shortcut key. To reverse the accent mark use the opposite accent mark, often on the tilde key. Moves one word to the left.

Moves to the beginning of the line or paragraph.

Moves to the end of the paragraph.

Deletes word to right of cursor.

Moves the cursor to the end of the document. Moves the cursor to the beginning of the document. Reset highlighted text to the default font. Single-space lines.

Prints the document.

Open Help. Repeat the last action performed (Word 2000+) Open the find, replace, and go to window in Microsoft Word. Spellcheck and grammar check selected text or document. Save as. Change the text in Microsoft Word from uppercase to lowercase or a capital letter at the beginning of every word.

Runs a Thesaurus check on the word highlighted. Save. Create a soft break instead of a new paragraph. Paste. Insert the current date. Insert the current time.

In addition to the above shortcut keys users can also use their mouse as a method of quickly do something commonly performed. Below some are examples of mouse shortcuts.
Mouse shortcuts Click, hold, and drag Double-click Description Selects text from where you click and hold to the point you drag and let go. If double-click a word, selects the complete word. Double-clicking on the left, center, or right of a blank line will make the alignment of the text left, center, or right aligned. Double-clicking anywhere after text on a line will set a tab stop.
