But there is so much that is part of this season that we felt we would anyway share this with Mylaporeans who seek out ways to soak in and make the best of whats on offer. During the month of Margazhi, several groups do the rounds of the streets of Mylapore singing songs and bhajans. You can join any of them. One such group is the Shivanugraha Bhajan Group, first started by Papanasam Sivan in 1930. The group is now run by his daughter Dr. Rukmini Ramani. She will not mind your presence. . Catch them at 5:30a.m. near the sixteen-pillared mandapam located on the eastern side of the Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple. They walk around the four mada veedhis (streets) and finish at around 7:15 a.m. Rukmini Ramani can be contacted at 9840348638. There are other Mylapore groups that go around the inner streets. Feel free to join them. Or follow them.

Order Kolam powder

Want to buy this in kilos? Head to the local drug shops (nattu marundu kadai) and to local market places. To Bazaar Road and Mandaveli Street. For 20 years, G. Gowri has been selling kolam powder (both white and colour) at the market on Bazaar Road. A 500g packet of white kolam powder is sold for Rs. 10. The colour pack which has 12 colours (50g each) is sold for Rs.15. Door delivery is offered for purchases above Rs.500. During Margazhi, discourses and upanyasams are often conducted by the sabhas and by temples. Check them out. Vishaka Haris Srinivasa Vaibhavam was performed at Narada Gana Sabha on New Years day. There is a huge demand for dance accessories during this season. There are several stores on North Mada Street - most sell simple, imitation dance jewellery. A. S. Muthuvel of Vijaya Stores says people choose plastic imitation jewellery over metal ornaments. A complete Bharatanatyam jewellery set costs Rs.950 here. APPEAL TO MOTORISTS
If you live in this zone or use it next weekend, there will be heavy traffic flow to the events. The organizers ask you to bear with them. Also, the Kolams will be on display till 6 m on North mada veedhi on the weekend and traffic allowd to ply only on one side. The idea is to allow people to enjoy the 100 kolams.

The four-day celebration of the arts and the community features over 30 events and 100 performing artistes. Events will be at a dozen venues. Funded wholly by Sundaram Finance ( the company has funded all the festivas thus far), the uniqueness of this event is that it uses open spaces in Sri Kapali Temple and outside it to highlight the importance of giving priority to religious and cultural events than to unplanned growth and chaotic traffic. What started as a simple kolam contest held over 12 years ago in the

Sivaswamy School playground has now grown into a major cultural festival, the only one pof its kind in this city. On Thursday and Friday ( Jan.9 and 10) events in Sannidhi Square will begin after the traffic dies down at the Main Stahe while five streets will come alive - food, carft, art, handwork will dominate these streets. Classical dance shows are held inside the temple. The shows are open to all. Not to be missed is the dance drama on Friday evening on the Main Stage presented by Sridevi Nrityalaya of guru Sheela

Unnikrishnan. Sheelas 20-member troupe promises an engrossing show, enjoyed in the open air. Families can walk around the temple zone to shop and bargain or simply enjpy the sights and sounds of women selling their craftwork or artists displaying their framed creatives. Souvenirs - T shirts, framed illustrations of Mylapore themes and limited coffee dabras - will be on sale at two booths at the ther and on the Food Street. All info is at www.mylaporefestival.com.

The core of the music and dance season is over. Now comes the street festival.
In the new week ahead, yet another edition of the annual Mylapore festival funded wholly by Sundaram Finance will unfold in the heart of Mylapore. The dates - January 9 to 12. And I hope you will mark them on your calendar, In your diary or in your handphone. Even as I write this I take a call from our friends at the Government College of Art in Periamet, finalizing a group of art students who will display and work on Pitchu Pillai Street. Collector of books, postage and documents Winston is briefing me on a Canon printer that can roll out small colour photographs every 11 seconds - we want to the facility at the two weekend Kolam Contests on North Mada Street where each evening over 100 people, including children will design pulli kolams. Keepsake photos are a treasure. And the Kolam Display is probably the most photographed event. A well wisher calls - why have you forgotten the Kokalikattai stilt dancers from Wallajah...o yes, how they danced across the kolam carpet and took the crowds to the main stage like cool Pied Pipers! The Fest has its events. And people run them. We just have to launch the sounds of the nadaswaram by the sishyas of Mylai Rajendran. As Festival director I have moved from scheduling events to working with the community. This is the more challenging task. How do we get more and more people to relate to the Fest? My colleague Revathi got a good idea going - creating the Mylapore Mosaic - women do handwork on a 1 ft by 1 ft cloth with a peacock motif. Twenty people have contributed this far; more are welcome to join this year-long project hich will stitch all the pieces together! 25 young and senior people raised their hands to volunteer some have been with us since the kolam contests we organised in 2001. Dr Vatsala Narayanaswamy always gives space in her large house to hold Talks. Three families are willing to offer elai sapad at their homes next Sunday. There is more to do. If you are a Mylaporean family keen to join the celebration come along. Buzz us now. We can be proud of this event because it now gets attention worldwide. One Argentinian, two French and a group of Americans have made time to be here. Invite your friends and relatives to the Fest. WE will be happy to see you happy.

The tradition of making cribs at Christmastime is on the wane. Like many other traditions - sitting together to make snacks or sitting around the table to have Christmas lunch. To encourage the crib making tradition, Mylapore Times organised a Crib Contest on the eve of the festival and received entries from 49 families, from San Thome, Foreshore Estate, R A Puram and Alwarpet. There were also entries from simple folks who live off the kuppams of Srinivasapuram and from four non Christians too. The contest suggested to families that they use recycled or easily available materials and be innovative in the crib design. On Sunday last, at a function held at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre in San Thome, the community of participants were first shown a film documenting all the cribs. Worked by R Saravanan and Parameshwaran, the two - part film ( now posted on Mylapore TV page on YouTube). The occasion - to grant the prizes won by families who had created the best cribs this Christmas in this area. 49 families including took part in this contest which was judged by youth activist Deepak, who is also known for creating large cribs with sound and light effects when he used to live in Mandavelipakkam. Over two days, Deepak and photographer R Saravanan criss-crossed the area to look at and photograph the cribs and Deepak chose five families for the top prizes - a star-image trophy and a cheque. The winners were Gandhi, Johnson and Charles, Daniel Sebastian, Srikala and Nivedita and Jagan and Joshua. Seven others were also given prizes. They were All participants received

certificates - this was to acknowledge their creativity. Senior San Thomite F J Vincent, a travel consultant and community activist gave away the prizes. This event was hosted by Mylapore Times for the first time. The newspaper also hosts the annual Navaratri Kolu Contest.

These are back to back shows. Each is different. Sri Idagunji Mahaganapati Yakshagana Mandali, Keremane (north Karnataka) perform Sitaapaharana, an episode from the Ramayana on Jan.11. for an hour. Karthaveeryarjuna, an episode from Mahabharatha will be staged on Sunday.

A recent Jottings column on the Annapoorna chain of cafeterias took me down memory lane, to the 50s and 60s. Annapoorna was first opened at Victory House on Mount Road ( the present premises of VGP & Co.) where the food was hygienically prepared and not served with bare hands but with clean tongs. It later shifted to the Govt. Estates where the standards were not strict. Also, Khadi Gramodyog Bhavan here offered great Gandhian food - hand pounded rice served with milk and honey. I also recall times at Childrens Theatre; tickets for adults were Re.1 and for children, 50 paise. I used to take my children there every weekend without fail.

This is when I realized that there is need for useful info like where and how to treat a snake bite and where to secure the serum for treatment. Your newspaper can, from time to time publish such less known and SOS kind of info.

Recent history of Annapoorna Cafetaria; why it had to close

This is with reference to a Jottings column in Mylapore Times. where you had written that Sarojini Varadappan must be remembered for the Annapoorna cafetarias. I wish to elucidate on this. Leelavathi Munshi started these cafetarias in various cities and these were successful in some cities, including Madras due to the dynamic management. A few years ago, the then state government started constructing the new Assembly Buildings and all existing structures were unceremoniously knocked down. One fine morning a government rep told us that our building too would be knocked down the next day. The land for this campus was given to us by the government but we had put up the building. We requested the govt. to allot us an alternate site to run the caf which offered food items on a no loss no profit basis OR to award us compensation for the demolition. Several reminders were sent to the government; we even submitted a letter to the chief minister. After a long wait we had perforce to close down the caf, disband the cooks and the staff officially.

Pained to see tulsi, flower garlands dumped in bins

I am a resident of Mandavelipakkam. It pains me a lot to see the Tulsi and flower garlands offered to temples by devotees being dumped on the road next to a garbage dump. This offering must be treated with great respect. One way is for the temple authorities to pack them before disposing it or arranging with NGOs for collection and use for organic compost. Secondly, devotees on their part can offer smaller garlands, as Lord Krishna himself said that He is equally pleased with just one Tulsi. Perhaps we can start this practice in the new year?

NEW BOUTIQUE HOTEL OPENS AT R. A. PURAM

By Our Staff Reporter At the intersection of Greenways Road and Chamiers Road a new corporate boutique hotel has just opened at R. A. Puram. Called Js Five Two and owned by JS Laboratories, the hotel caters to business travelers and offers single, double and triple occupancy rooms. It also has two multicuisine restaurants and a mocktail lounge. The hotel straightaway launched a quick promo for its restaurants on Christmas eve; located along a line of popular eat-outs, this could be a good check-out its its food clicks. A rooftop restaurant is expected to open shortly. There is a 24-hour cafe lounge. The mocktail lounge will feature DJ and Karaoke nights and offers exotic fusion food in various cuisines in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
