REPORT OF THE STUDENT REGENT ON THE 1296TH BOR MEETING

On the 2012 Draft Code of Student Conduct After the deferral in the last Board meeting, we have tried to renegotiate these three contentious provisions with former UP Diliman Chancellor Saloma. The said provisions are the following: Section IV.1.3.1 Harm to Persons a. Creating and/or engaging in disorder, tumult, breach of peace, or serious disturbance such as, but not limited to, rumbles, within the University premises, resulting in harm to persons... d. Accepting a student who has not completed a one-semester residency in UP Diliman for membership in a registered student organization... e. Disrespect towards any person, which includes, but not limited to, insulting.... We raised several salient points: academic freedom, collegiality and self-regulation is now part of the core principles of student conduct and the residency rule for joining fraternities and sororities is now reduced to one semester. These provisions may be more lenient but the Office stands firm that any code that aims to limit our student organizations and activities curtails our constitutional rights to organize and assemble. The Code of Student Conduct will be again taken up in the next Board meeting after we receive and discuss the comments of the Office of the Vice President for Legal Affairs.

On the Next Chancellor of UP Diliman We continued to support Dr. Ceasar Saloma for another term as Chancellor because we have seen his practice of democratic governance among the different sectors of UP Diliman. From dealing with student issues to the concerns of the community surrounding the campus, he has exemplified what an administrator should besomeone who is able to balance rules and regulations while hearing out the concerns and issues of the sectors. We congratulate Dr. Michael Tan for being selected as the new chancellor of UP Diliman. We look forward to working with him and hope that his administration will also practice democratic governance and will hear the legitimate issues of the different sectors of Diliman.

Motions for reconsideration on the Virata School of Business and the Academic Calendar Shift Together with the Staff Regent, we filed two motions for reconsideration on two Board decisions on the renaming of the UP Diliman College of Business Administration and the pilot shift in the academic calendar of the UP system. These will be again taken up in the 1297th Board meeting in March.

For the students and the people,
