The International Conference on Power Electronics & Drives [ICPEDSNitte2014] will be held at the Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthya Institute of Technology [NMAMIT], Nitte, Karnataka State, India, during 10th -11th April 2014. 21st century industrial civilization depends on electrical form of energy. Nations living prosperity is decided by per capita consumption of electricity. Presently in an industrialized nation generated electrical power is processed through power electronics for various applications in industrial, commercial, residential, aerospace and defence environments. So far electrical energy has been generated from fossil and nuclear power plants with out due consideration of their environmental impacts. Global warming (green house effect), acid rain and urban air pollution are mainly due to emissions from fossil fuel plants. Safety issues of nuclear power plants are also now causing tremendous concern in our society. How to improve living standards without endangering the environment is of main concern in the 21st century. Coping with electrical form of energy stress and ensuring equitable allocation of scarce electrical energy resources for industrial, commercial, residential, aerospace, defence and environmental needs requires innovative application and state-of art technologies and approaches. Power Electronics and Drives has emerged as a essential technology in the recent trend of industrial automation, which promotes the coordinated development and management of electrical power supply and utilization in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an impartial manner without compromising the sustainability of vital power system network. Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, Transportation, Renewable Energy Systems, Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Industrial applications are

The Conference and its Objectives

some of the key areas requiring attention of researchers and practioners. In addition environmental impacts due to emissions from fossil fuel plants and uncertainties introduced on power systems may require significantly different management policies in future. Power Electronics and Drives address several challenges to be solved such as the integration of clean energy generation and the use of efficient high-power and energy storage systems. It also helps the energy industry in solving the problems introduced by the integration of renewable energy systems in terms of reliability and stability of the power grid. In addition, energy distribution systems based on the HVDC topology are being installed all over the world. The need for such an integrated approach to solve power related problems has been recognized in several countries and India too needs to adopt such a holistic approach to ensure the improvement of living standards with out endangering the environment for future generations. ICPEDS-Nitte2014 is being organized with the objective of identifying plans, policies and methodologies necessary for energy conservation and sustainable electrical energy resources development and management in the Indian context. The conference is being organizes by the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, NMAMIT, Nitte, during 10th & 11th April 2014. ICPEDS-Nitte2014 is designed to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and interactions between academicians, researchers and practitioners engaged in activities related to electrical power resources with development and management of Power Electronics and Drives. The conference will provide a platform for delegates from across the country to meet and discuss future policies for managing Indias power resources in
