IOP The Packaging Society (a division of Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining) was formally the Institute of Packaging (IOP) and is the professional membership body for the packaging industry in the UK. IOP has joined BRC in developing the Global Standard for Packaging.

BRC/IoP Global Standards for

Packaging and Packaging Materials
British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Institute of Packaging (IoP) in association have designed Global Standards for Packaging and Packaging Materials in 2001.
to protect consumer by providing a framework/ criteria for the evaluation of the organizations supplying packaging to Own Brand food producers for the UK Retail Market The standard has since then established worldwide usage as a framework for businesses to assist in the production of safe packaging has been developed to specify the safety, quality and operational criteria required to be in place within a packaging manufacturing organization to fulfill obligations with regard to legal compliance and protection of the consumer

BRC/IoP Global Standards for

Packaging and Packaging Materials
Standard applies to manufacture of packaging and packaging material used in food packaging and filling operations and may also apply to those for cosmetics and toiletries and other non-food products and materials. It is also intended to apply to:
Operations that are supplying packaging material from stock where additional product processing or repacking occurs; this has been demonstrated to require the same level of control as a final/ integrated converting operation. Consumer disposable goods that come into contact with food that are made from packaging material intended for food preparation, ex: corrugated boxes, paper plates and disposable plastic drinking cups, aluminum foil, cling film, etc. The manufacture and supply of other materials which are unconverted or semiconverted and used or incorporated. Eg: inks, coatings and adhesives where this is based on a risk analysis and mutually agreed between those involved.

BRC/IoP Global Standards for

Packaging and Packaging Materials
This Global Standard identifies three categories of packaging with regard to the standards of hygiene under which packaging is produced as given below:
Packaging that comes into direct contact with high-risk products (those intended for human consumption or which will come into close contact with the body such as application to the skin or are intended for infants) Packaging for high-risk products that doesnt come into direct contact with such products Packaging for products with low risk with regard to standards of hygiene but which must clearly meet defined functional requirements.
