Dear Parents and Friends of the School

One of the challenges being set for students, especially our senior school students, this year is community partnership and contribution.
Volunteering is commonplace in our community with many service groups, interest groups and sport groups relying heavily on people giving time freely. The work carried out by our local St Johns, volunteer fire brigades and Lions provide regular evidence of this. Encouraged by the example set by our student leaders we hope to provide opportunities for the senior school student body to engage in volunteering. To date we have had students involved in the Clutha District Youth Council: Others have helped the Heart Foundation Annual Appeal. A good number of students, many from Year 7/8, helped out with catering at the Lawrence Lions Trail Bike Ride.

This event was even bigger this year with just under eight hundred riders. Our school PTA provided lunches for these riders. This meant that our parent volunteers had a very busy Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A really good number of parents gave time and helped out with the many tasks, preparing packs on Friday, preparing onions on Friday. Organising and setting up equipment; tressels, tables, marques, BBQs was work quietly carried out in the background. Cooking meals (BBQ plus hotdogs and chips) and serving meals required a dedicated crew of workers. These were however most enjoyable tasks as team spirit was high with everyone getting stuck in. A huge congratulations goes to all the PTA organisers who coordinated all aspects of this fundraiser brilliantly. A big thanks goes to Jamie and Sally Benington for selflessly providing the use of their property and time. Students will hopefully follow the example set by their parents and see the value in volunteering and how this contributes to the well being and functioning of communities.

Kind Regards John Auld

E - Day - Yr 11-13 Students Roxburgh Area School

Yr 11-13 Students took part in a very informative and productive eDay in Roxburgh recently. The day is designed to allow students to meet with their online teachers, find out about the course, establish relationship and links, and set the year off in the right direction. Feedback was very positive with students gaining confidence in their ability to succeed with this method of learning.

Gold has had two wins beating both Clinton and Balclutha with great all round play, accurate bowling, good fielding and attacking batting. Blue lost by one wicket against Rosebank but bounced back against Clinton. Batting first Blue scored 122 runs with great contributions from Regan 30, Kyle 25 and Blaize 15. They then bowled Clinton out for 103, with great fielding producing four run outs.

Roxburgh Athletics - this annual event is keenly looked forward to by students. Meeting with and competing against their peers from Roxburgh and Maniototo is always a challenge. Fine sunny weather set the scene for a great day. A raft of track and field events provided numerous opportunities for personnel best performances in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, Javelin, Shotput, Discus, Triple Jump and High Jump. Sunblock, hats and shade were sought afters as the day grew hotter. Our students gave their very best, taking part in as many events as possible. Sore legs and tired bodies were much in evidence on Wednesday. A big thanks is extended to Clare Anderson and Kelly Fahey for helping us out with transport.
