WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES This workshop consists of a weekly training of the students during one semester and whose objectives are to provide students with hands on experience related to mechanical and materials engineering. The workshop will train the student on: i) Laboratory safety rules; ii) various applications of engineering instrumentation; iii) engineering drawing; iv) hand manufacturing of printed circuit boards; v) fusion welding processes, resistance welding and cutting; vi) machining processes used to produce round shapes and holes (lathe and lathe operation); vii) drilling, drills and drilling machines; viii) machining processes to produce various shapes: milling and sawing; and, ix) production of microelectronic devices.

LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of this workshop, the student should be able to do the following: To use measuring instruments and how to select them. Analyze the language of engineering drawings and be able to sketch electronic and mechanical drawings. To design and manufacture one layer printed circuit board. Recognize the principles of fusion-welding processes and practicing them: oxyacetelene-gas welding (OAW), and arc-welding processes. Analyze the operation of lathes and turning operations, observe external and internal material-removal processes, and screw-thread cutting. Describe the operation of a milling machine. To practice the drilling on drilling machines. Understand the application of different types of drills (CNC-machine). Analyze the production of steel. Analyze the production of polymers. ATTENDANCE For legitimate reasons only, a student is allowed to absent him/herself for a maximum of 2 workshop sessions. Any absence beyond two sessions will result in an automatic AW in the course and other disciplinary measures. In the event of an excused absence from a workshop session, the student is still accountable to submit his/her workshop report on the due date. Failure to accomplish this requirement will automatically result in a zero on that report. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY The student should get familiar with the Course Rules and Regulations of the Department of Computer and Communications Engineering (CCE) at AUST. These are compiled and distributed to the student at the beginning of every academic term. In particular, the student should be aware that plagiarism and other sorts of academic dishonesty are not tolerated and can result in unsympathetic penalties. The Department of CCE fully acknowledges the potential significance of students studying together. In this sense, the CCE Department does not have any reservation to this kind of collaboration, as long as all contestants are involved in all facets of the work, and not with each individual contributing to a fraction of the assignment. Specifically, when a student submits an assignment with his/her name on it, the CCE Department takes it for granted that the details presented in the assignment are entirely the students own work, and that this student has substantially participated in the creation of this work. If a portion of the work has been conceived by collaborative work, that section should be highlighted and the names of the students involved in this collaboration should be listed next to that section.
