The Model UN program is a combination UAA/ASD project where students learn about other nations and represent their nation at the annual Model UN conference at the UAA campus in February 2014. It is a great program that explores world issues and exposes students to other cultures around the world. It also helps students develop speaking, organization, mediation and leadership skills. For the college minded, Model UN programs look great on scholarship and college applications. For others, it is a fun way to meet people and learn about the world around you.

Film As Literature: Classic American Movies

In this intensive, students will be viewing and responding to many classic American movies. We will focus on the history of American film and the language of film in addition to considering plot, theme, character and style. Together we will view films ranging from Casablanca to Star Wars. FYI-those that sign up for this intensive be warned: THIS IS NOT A RECREATIONAL FILM VIEWING. In this intensive you will be attempting to learn a Language Arts elective credit. There will be multiple writing assignments ranging from personal reactions to critical analyses. In addition to this, you will actively participate in daily seminar conversations and research and present on a topic ranging from an actor/director biography or an element of motion picture.

Valley Potter: The Polaris Version of the Musical Parody Teacher: Siri Grades: 9-12 Polaris Credit Type: General Elective ASD Number & Credit Type: H9007QALT (Drama)
The very popular take off on the loveable Harry Potter series will come to life at Polaris. We will create our unique version of the parody and film it for continued enjoyment in years to come. We will need flexible cast members as well as crew to do costumes, set design/construction, sound, and video. There will be a fee for this intensive.

Once Upon A Time: The Origins and Evolution of Fairy Tales Teacher: Alysha Grades: 6-12 Polaris Credit Type: L.A. Elective ASD Number & Credit Type: H0357QALT, M0410ALT Fee: $5.00
Fairy tales have been popular for many centuries and remain so today. Many of the stories are highly publicized with Disney movies, toys, and theme parks. We will dive into these notable fairy tales and explore the meaning and message of each. We will trace the history of each tale and examine the contexts along the way. You will even have the opportunity to write your own fairy tale. Some of the material covered in this intensive will include dark or mature themes. Global Pollution and Our Garbage Where Does It All Go? Teacher: Andrea Grades: 9-12 Polaris Credit Type: Biological Sciences, Life Science Credit ASD Number & Credit Type: H2210QALT (Biological Sciences, Life Science Credit)
Have you ever really wondered where all your garbage goes? What about the waste of 7 Billion people? What does it mean to be Zero Waste? This intensive will examine the garbage and pollution of our world and look at some solutions. Travel with us to our local landfill, the waste treatment center, and our neighboring recycling center.

Science Olympiad is a set of science and engineering challenges for students to explore medicine and biology, earth and space sciences, physics and chemistry, technology and the nature of science. Teams of up to 15 students compete as pairs in 23 different challenges, from identifying chemicals to building bridges or describing the processes of digestion. The particular challenges change each year. In addition to the class time in early January, intensive participants will be required to join their teams at the state Science Olympiad competition, which will be at UAA on Saturday, March 29, 2014.

Students will play a wide range of popular mind-challenging board games. Their strategic skills will be tested when they face up to five opponents. Tactics must change with the logic of each game. They may need to cooperate and negotiate or deceive and dominate to win. A partial list of games includes: Risk, Stratego, and Settlers of Catan, plus new versions of the listed games. Several more games are a possibility.

Become a part of the tradition! Join us this year when our ever-popular theatre intensive focuses on one of the worlds oldest performing arts! Inspired by the films of Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Laurel & Hardy, the New Vaudeville & Physical Comedy style, with its unique, comic blend of mime, theatre, and slapstick, is a great acting exercise that can strengthen an actors skills acrossthe-board, and is a delight to experience from both sides of the footlights! Students will spend half the day in classes, receiving specialized instruction in related theatre history, movement, physical comedy, pantomime, improvisation, and character building. The remainder of the day will be spent in rehearsal for our New Vaudeville, silent movie-style production. Our class may conclude with public performances at APUs Grant Hall Theatre. To participate in this intensive, students must commit to being in class every day, all day, from Day #1 on, as theres a great deal to accomplish in a very short time. Please do not register if you are planning on taking a KCC course. This is truly an intense intensive in terms of time and the need for focus. Students should have the maturity and patience to be focused, involved, and responsible ensemble members. Our dates and times will vary from the regular intensives schedule in that we've added evening and weekend dates/times for performances. Please check your calendar carefully before signing up to make sure there will not be any conflicts. Class Title: Lego Robotics


Description: Have you heard of Lego Robotics? Teams create these robots that complete various tasks. The robots are controlled by a programmable brain, so programming ability is key here. But so is building a bot that can accomplish the missions. Join us as we learn to build and program mighty robots. Our goal in this intensive is to accomplish missions in this years nationwide Lego Robotics competition, titled, Natures Fury. Intensive students will also have the opportunity to compete in the State tournament in January.
