Sustainable Water Management: Funding for Serial Summer Schools in Germany

One of the priority funding points, which the Federal Ministry of EdWhat are the Programme Ob- ucation and Research (BMBF) attaches particular importance to in its Framework Programme "Research for Sustainable Developjectives?

ment" is Sustainable Water Management (NaWaM): "One of the major challenges of the future is to ensure the supply of clean water to the world population. Population growth, water pollution and the increasing water consumption per capita have a strong impact on water quality. In addition, expansive climate changes and change in land use influence global and regional water cycles and thus question the medium and long-term availability of water" In view of this background, the BMBF specifically promotes research projects to develop, adapt and internationally disseminate technologies and strategies for the sustainable management of the Resource "Water". Of particular interest in this respect are the thematic fields of "Water and Energy" "Water and Health", "Water and Nutrition", "Water and Environment" as well as "Water in Urban Areas". At the centre of the DAAD Special Programme funded with the resources of the BMBF on "Sustainable Water Management" lies the promotion of young scientists from Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Jordan, Iran, Vietnam and Indonesia. To this end, Individual Scholarships are offered for Students and Doctoral Students in the first Funding Line. The offer of a second Funding Line targets the Institutes at Universities and Non-University Research Institutions in Germany. They are given the opportunity to carry out Serial Summer Schools on the thematic fields mentioned above. Serial Summer Schools above all aim to initiate research collaboration and projects. Besides the cultural and specialist exchange between those participating, the discussion on and preparation of research findings connected with the latest priority funding points of the BMBF, can be promoted. Furthermore, the Summer Schools offer the opportunity to present Research Locations, Projects, Infrastructures and Databases in Germany. In order to raise the quality of the practical relevance, commercial companies from business and industry, from the specialised authorities of the Federation and the Federal States, as well as in the management and regulation of resources, in corporations under public law, or in research institutions in Germany should be included as far as possible.

Who can apply? In principle, applications are open to the Heads of the specialised,
relevant Institutes at Higher Education Institutions and NonUniversity Institutions in Germany.

What can be funded?

A Serial Summer School can be funded with up to 120,000 EURO and covers 3 individual Summer Schools in three consecutive years. Each individual Summer School is structured for a term of 14 days with up to 20 participants. The funding of a Serial Summer School covers the following benefits: Surcharge towards living and accommodation costs: 750 / Participant Surcharge towards organisational costs: 500 / Participant Flat-rate Travel Allowances: (Changes possible in 2013/2014): Indonesia Iran Jordan Kazakhstan Mongolia Vietnam 825,- 550,- 700,- 525,- 625,- 1.150,-

The funding of a Serial Summer School is provided in the course of a Fixed-Sum Payment under a Grant Agreement. We proceed on the assumption that in the realisation of the Serial Summer School, the Grant Recipient will, beyond the flat-rate sums, make payments (e.g. for laboratory equipment and experimental items), which must be listed in the project description and in the Final Report. Such expenses are not subject to funding via the DAAD. The process of recruiting applicants and the selection of participants by the organiser of a Serial Summer School must be documented for the DAAD. The following criteria, in particular, must be considered in the selection: an excellent specialised qualification; the directly specialised relevance between the current work and theme of the Summer School, a University Degree (at least at Bachelor's level) and good English language skills.

Selection

The choice of Serial Summer Schools is made by a Specialist Committee of proven scientists. The primary criterion for the support is a convincing Master Plan and its interconnection with the concepts and programmes for the individual schools. Furthermore, the specialised excellence of the course offerings (including the integration of corresponding companies) and the scientists participating in the programme play a major role.

Selection

The selection is expected to be made in February 2013. All applicants are expected to have been informed of the results by the end of March 2013. The organisers themselves will assume responsibility for the promotional activities regarding the Summer Schools and for the participants. This is where, above all, use should be made of any existing collaborative contacts and relations. Die FThe funding of the selected Serial Summer Schools will be provided via grant agreements.
