Target Estimation using Kalman Filtering: From Collision Assurance to Collision Avoidance

Abstract Ever since it came to limelight, Kalman Filtering has been the backbone of almost all Engineering applications including robotics, process control, guidance and control of aerospace and ground vehicles, remote sensing, image processing etc. to name a few. Perhaps this is one of this best discovery of twentieth century, finding wide-spread applications with unlimited success stories. Even though it was discovered half a century back, it continues to fascinate researchers and continues to prove itself very handy to solve numerous real-life challenging problems. The purpose of this talk is to give a quick tutorial overview of Kalman Filtering, followed by discussing some recent results on two fundamental issues of control and guidance of Aerospace vehicles; i.e. collision assurance and collision avoidance. In collision assurance, the problem of guiding a missile for an evading target (i.e. an advanced combat aircraft in evasive barrel-roll maneuver) will be discussed. In the opposite spectrum of collision avoidance, the problem of steering away an UAV from unexpected pop-up obstacles will be discussed using two nonexpensive pinhole cameras.

Decomposition Approaches in Systems Engineering methodologies

Abstract: Adherence to good manufacturing practices requires robust process design procedures and a set of operational practices that are oriented to consistently achieve targeted performance, in spite of unforeseen disturbances and uncertainties. Process systems engineering (PSE) methodologies such as modeling, system identification optimization, control and performance monitoring, which are based on an analysis of the cause-effect relationships, help to achieve this adherence and alignment with the operational goals. With tighter integration of process systems for energy &/mass efficiency, the behavioral relationships within these systems can become fairly complex. The presence of nonlinearities and multiple time scales in the relationships can pose difficulties in representing and analyzing their impact on the overall manufacturing objectives. Furthermore, large scale process systems bring in their own peculiar challenges. Given that the complexity does not grow linearly with size and the presence of interactions between large subsystems is often times unknown apriori, the above systems engineering methodologies need to be strengthened with appropriate decomposition based approaches that can breakdown the complexity and facilitate the analysis and decision-making related tasks. This seminar will provide an overview of such decomposition based approaches that have been demonstrated to achieve complexity reduction at a practical level. Validation results on representative systems from process engineering literature will be presented to illustrate the practicality of the proposed approaches.

Bipedalism and Cognition

Abstract Bipedal walking is evident in the earliest hominins, but why our unique two-legged gait evolved remains unknown. Bipedalism and Cognition have a very close relationship. Bipedalism had freed the hands to create tools and start cognition. Bipedal locomotion is energetically efficient form of locomotion. Is it possible to have cognition without locomotion or is it possible to have bipedalism without cognition?

Humans have built complex environments, tools and equipment very much adapted to ourselves. Robots with human-like morphology and motion capabilities have a greater potential acting in living environments created for humans, than e.g. wheeled robots. The current focus in humanoid research is more on bipedalism than cognition. It is arguable that achieving stable and robust bipedal locomotion is essential and then to implement cognition.

The talk will touch upon the origins of bipedal locomotion and the advantages thereof. The current humanoid research focus and the importance of embodied cognition will be highlighted.

Sequence Similarity and High Dimensionality Data Clustering Schemes for Discriminating Partial Discharge Signatures Dynamic Pattern Recognition Techniques
Abstract Identification and discrimination of flaws and imperfections in insulation system of power apparatus is a basic yet vital requirement for diagnosis. Partial Discharge (PD) phenomenon which inherently serves as an excellent non- intrusive testing technique is an electric breakdown which is confined to the localized region(s) of dielectric system of power apparatus. PDs are pulsating currents characterized by very short duration ranging from a few nano-seconds to a few micro-seconds depending on the defect source. PD is essentially a complex stochastic and non-Markovian process exhibiting substantial statistical variability. The complexities may be attributed to the effect of space charge, geometry of the defect, temperature, pressure etc. Several researchers have carried out exhaustive studies to characterize the nature of PD signatures to ascertain the complex stochastic and non- Markovian behaviour. Initial tests were conducted by researchers for studying the characteristics of PD signature patterns for the Trichel pulses. The phenomenon indicated a non-Markovian and distinct random process wherein the memory propagation effect plays a vital role. It is observed during laboratory studies conducted by researchers to understand the behaviour of PD signatures during dielectric ageing that the statistical behaviour of PD, changes with time due to the 'self-extinction' property of PD pulses in a cavity. These aspects clearly establish the non-stationary behaviour of PD signatures during

International Conference on Electrical Sciences ICES2013

Page 5

discharge initiated ageing thus reiterating the need for dynamic pattern recognition techniques for appropriate discrimination based on model validation utilizing a non-stationary representation. In this context, two distinct approaches have been taken up for the development of a Hybrid Classifiers scheme for discrimination of defects namely the sequence similarity based non-stationary continuous density Hidden Markov Model (CDHMM) and a high dimensionality clustering (S-Transform and its variant) which utilizes the vital characteristics of relating the time-frequency association. To ascertain the performance of both the proposed schemes the stationary variant of the CDHMM and another contemporary time-frequency association technique i.e. Wavelet Transform is taken up for comparison and analysis.

Abstract In the past two decades the awareness about food safety and in particular with respect to specific pathogenic bacteria, has increased. This is especially true in the case of milk, meat and fish where microbial spoilage can be dangerous for humans and demands a rapid and accurate detection system. A number of techniques namely instrumental mechanical

methods, ultra sound technique, optical spectroscopy, microscopy and magnetic resonance methods have been used to examine the quality of meat and fish. These techniques have several disadvantages; they are destructive methods, requiring complex sample preparation and data analysis, and can be quite costly. Using electronic nose technology consisting of an array of partially selective gas sensors together with pattern recognition techniques can provide quality assessment of milk, meat and fish rapidly with greater accuracy and efficiency. Pure and doped nanostructured ZnO thin films are increasingly being used as sensing components in electronic nose instruments. The nanostructured ZnO thin films have shown better response with inherent selectivity in the detection of markers of milk, meat and fish spoilage such as ethanol, trimethylamine, hexanal, dimethyl sulphide, ammonia, etc., thus outperforming the traditional gas sensors. Hence we have fabricated pure and doped nanostructured ZnO thin films based chemical sensors which can sense volatile organic compounds (food freshness level markers) both at room and elevated operating temperatures. Finally, a prototype electronic nose has been designed using the fabricated sensors on the embedded platform to evaluate the freshness level of milk.

Abstract: With recent advances in internet and multimedia technology, the involvement of digital images in crimes has been increasing significantly. In cases of child sexual abuse, child pornography, masked gunmen, and violent protesters (e.g., the London and the Rome riots in 2011), evidence for identifying criminals or victims are often in the form of digital images. Identifying individuals from this digital evidence can be very challenging because the criminals are usually careful to hide or cover their faces. In a child sexual offense case in U.S., Dr. Kong, who served as an expert witness, faced this challenging identification problem. The U.S. Department of Justice requested Dr. Kong to verify a criminal in evidence images with a suspect, but the face of the criminal was not observable and tattoos were no found. In this talk, Dr. Kong will present a set of computational methods for this problem.

Abstract: Future automation systems, in spite of greater and wider automation, will retain the human element in the decision making loop for reflexive decision making skills that impact safety and security. These humans will be required to have a higher degree of understanding of basic engineering and scientific issues, exhibit critical decision making skills and possess keen reflexes (perception and observation skills) to observe and react to impending changes in the emergent scenarios. Much of our current day problems with automation software systems can be attributed to the inherent flexibility that users actively seek in software-driven automation control systems. Often, problems arise as these systems are not effectively designed and tested to coexist with other complex systems, including humans. Expectations include a high degree of flexibility with complex embedded software elements for data acquisition, coordination and monitoring; while actively assisting the human withcorrect decision-making. Issues include assembling, integrating and analyzing information from disparate sources in a timely, accurate and reliable manner, while meeting real-time needs. Future professionals are expected to have increased cross-disciplinary knowledge, understand and deal with the increasingly dominant role of technology, as well as operate effectively in an increasingly multi-cultural and multi-ethnic, global work environment. In this talk, I will outline and summarize some of the challenges, risks and opportunities that lie ahead for such professionals, specifically from a computing

perspective, while enabling ubiquity in embedding intelligence within our engineering automation systems.

3D Simulation of Single Event Upset in SiGe HBTs

Abstract Electronic Circuits in space are frequently hit by heavy ions. These ions ionizes the lattice atoms of the device as it passes through the substrate. Ionization leads to heavy density of electrons and holes along the path of the ion, which are collected by the terminals of the device. Once the charge is collected, the device returns back to its normal operation. SiGe HBTs are found to have a high performance equivalent to GaAs technologies and has the ease of silicon processing. SiGe HBTs were found robust to displacement damages and total ionizing dose radiation. Hence SiGe HBTs are attractive to Space applications. But recent simulations and microbeam experiments show that SiGe HBTs are prone to single event effects. SEU simulations were performed on SiGE HBTs using the TCAD package SENTAURUS. Charge collection in HBT is achieved through Drift and Diffusion mechanisms. The Collector-Susbtrate junction of the HBT plays a major role in charge collection. One of the obvious way of radiation hardening is removal of the CS junction. This was done by constructing the SiGe HBT on a buried oxide i.e. the intrinsic part of the device is identical to the bulk HBT and CS junction is replaced by the buried oxide. Various simulations were performed for different Si thickness above the buried oxide. It was found that the thickness variation did not have any impact on the charge collection. It was found that the charge collection is much reduced in the SOI HBT. This type of radiation hardening is called as Radiation Hardening By Process (RHBP), as changes in fabrication process, are made.

International Conference on Electrical Sciences ICES2013

Page 10

Another type of radiation hardening is Radiation Hardening By Design (RHBD), where the changes are made in the layout only. In this work we introduce an extra shared dummy CS junction outside the deep trench. This dummy CS junction reduces the diffusive charge collected by the HBT. Design rules require a minimum distance between deep trenches of adjacent devices. The dummy collector can be filled in these space between devices. The charge collection between the bulk device and dummy collector device are compared. A circuit contains many devices interconnected together. Hence it is important to study the charge collection mechanism with multiple devices sitting on a single substrate. Charge collection in a regular 22 and 33 HBT arrays are studied. The charge collection is compared between the regular and hardened HBT arrays. It has been found that the dummy CS junction reduces the diffusive charge collection by a considerable amount thereby preventing simultaneous charge collection in multiple devices in a HBT array. The amount of charge collected by the struck device in a HBT array decreases with increasing number of adjacent devices due to the sharing of charge collection.

Hemalatha M, Nandakumar B and Venkataraman R School of Computing SASTRA University hemalatha@it.sastra.edu

Abstract-The main philosophy behind Cognitive Radio is to efficiently access and utilize an available frequency spectrum in an opportunistic manner. Given todays scenario where the number of private operators are on the rise, frequency seems to be one of the most sought after resources. However, it is often unnoticed that the fraction of the spectrum that is utilized properly is less compared what is actually allocated. This is true even in the case of private license holders who do not use the frequency spectrum to the fullest. Also, military communications use frequency spectrum in sparse amounts when compared to the total bandwidth allotted to them. Thus in contrast to illusion, there is abundance in spectrum availability and the supposed spectrum shortage is partially an artifact of the regulatory and licensing process. Cognitive radio arises like a phoenix to emerge as an enticing solution to the congestion issue by facilitating opportunistic use of frequency bands that are otherwise not much used by licensed users. Here, in this paper, an attempt is made to implement such a Cognitive Radio using GNU Radio Companion(GRC), a software to design, implement and test Software Defined Radio(SDR). A significant challenge of the emerging cognitive radio based IEEE 802.22 Wireless Regional Area Networks (WRAN) is to tend to the issue of reliable spectrum sensing and sharing with satisfactory Quality of Service (QOS). Firstly the Bit Error Rate (BER) is measured for different modulation techniques against various available noise distributions for a given channel. Upon comparing the BER for various noise distribution and modulation techniques, the best OFDM technique is determined for each noise distribution. On implementing the SDR, a selector block is assigned as a switching element to select between the best modulation technique for a given channel with a noise distribution in a real time situation.

Abstract: Positioning is one of the key components in the field of ubiquitous and pervasive computing technologies. Determining the location of a person or an object in an unknown environment is useful in many applications especially in emergency and for security purpose. In such an environment the location information must be estimated accurately and inexpensively. This paper concentrates on the implementation of accurate and inexpensive indoor localization using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) for Ultra Wide Band (UWB) radio. Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) positioning technique using General Cross Correlation (GCC) is employed for indoor positioning of the target (Position of the unknown user/object). It employs classical MDS algorithm with its input as matrix of square proximities and gives two dimensional (2D) and three dimensional (3D) spatial configurations of the target or targets. Finally the accuracy of the proposed technique is improved by stress analysis. The performance of the proposed technique is found to be better than the existing indoor UWB localization system in terms of accuracy and cost Keywords: Classical MDS, GCC, TDOA, UWB

Abstract: Number of DC-DC converters seen in modern day electronic gadgets relying on battery power has been increased. The stringent requirements in rise time, settling time, immunity to load and line variations lead to addition of controllers to converters. More work has been done on applying classic and modern controllers are seen in literature. In this study, the asynchronous buck converters with no ideal components are taken and both electrical and mathematical representations are considered. Compensator is designed using MATLAB SISOTOOL which is a GUI to satisfy the phase margin and 0 dB crossover frequency requirements. PID and fuzzy logic controllers are developed for the given system and their performances are compared. Fuzzy logic controller with minimum set of rules is designed for both mathematical as well as electrical representation of the system and the superiority of such controller is demonstrated.

Abstract- Edible oil is an indispensable source of energy for human beings. Nowadays in India, Sunflower oil is replacing the traditional oils pertaining to its qualities such as good in PUFA, less in MUFA content and also has a good aroma. As demand for the oil increases, various cases are reported on sunflower oil adulteration with other cheap oils such as palm oil and other inedible oils. Our aim is to discriminate sunflower oil with palm oil using colorimeter that measures the absorption of light by the substance. This method is simple as it does not require any sample preparation when compared to the chromatographic and spectroscopic methods. PCA technique is employed to identify the minimum percentage of adulteration detection for the above data.

Abstract: Processing image is essential to increase the human and machine vision perception. For this reason, Image enhancement is a necessary process in the image processing for various applications and this is the first step in digital image processing before various processes is to be carried out. Among the various techniques in image enhancement HE is effective and

very simple enhancement technique. Processed output image by normal histogram equalization will result in contrast stretching and thereby reducing the original luminance (brightness) of the input image. Therefore new histogram techniques have been proposed and it mainly depends upon how the input image histogram is divided. A. N. Arvindan, and M. Monica Sree Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, SSN College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai, INDIA sree.monica.mohan@gmail.com

Abstract: The matrix converter topology is a versatile one that is capable of functioning as an ac regulator and as a cycloconverter. The topology has been used for ac-ac conversion for various applications that involve variable voltage and variable frequency. Various pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have been implemented in the topology to reduce the harmonic distortion and obtain better power quality parameters at the output. In this paper the symmetrical multipulse modulation technique (SMM) has been implemented in the single-phase matrix converter. The ability of the converter to deliver variable voltage at a specific fundamental (source) frequency and variable voltage at variable fundamental frequency (integer multiples of the supply frequency) with the technique has been assessed and experimental results are presented. The SMM is a simple method that involves two key parameters the number of equal width pulses per half cycle (M) of the supply and the duty cycle of the pulses (). The performance of the single-phase matrix converter is assessed for control strategies that involve a fixed value of M and variable ; and vice-versa.

Abstract:

Multi-port DC-DC converters becomes more potential in sustainable energy

generation system where multiple sources with storage elements are to be integrated for high power applications which needs high conversion efficiency and flexible output voltages. Due to the non-linear and the uncertain characteristics of the converters, a proper design of the controller is required. In this paper, Sliding Mode Control (SMC) which is robust against uncertainties and disturbances is implemented for a three port full-bridge DC-DC converter. The proposed controller has been designed and analyzed with the state-space average model of the three port full bridge converter. High performance and tracking accuracy of the system under parameter variations like line and load regulation were confirmed appropriately using simulations. The main objective of this paper is the implementation of different control methods like hysteresis based SMC and sliding mode voltage control for the three port converter. The regulation characteristics have been compared for different set points. It is found that the regulatory performance of the sliding mode voltage control is better than that of the hysteresis based SMC. But the hysteresis based SMC have inherently fast response with a simple design and easier to implement. Abstract- This paper deals with the design and fabrication of AC choke for the mitigation of interharmonics in variable speed drives created by motor current imbalance. The adjustable speed drive (ASD) consists of diode bridge rectifier and a two level inverter. Imbalance in the motor winding causes disturbance in the supply current. The disturbance in the motor is transferred to the inverter dc side and then it propagates into the supply side and appears as a interharmonic distortion in the input current of the supply. Interharmonics are components that are not integer multiples of the fundamental frequency. For the mitigation of harmonics and interharmonics AC choke is designed and simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software and the results are verified using the hardware.

Abstract: In this paper designing of discrete PID controller for basic DC-DC converters such as Buck, Boost, and Buck- Boost converters along with the advantages are presented. The open loop and closed loop models of these three converters have been implemented using MATLAB SIMULINK. Open loop models exhibit overshoot, undershoot and do not

maintain stable output voltage for the variations in input voltage and load current. Hence the closed loop models are adopted. The discrete PID controller is designed for closed loop models of converters, such that the output voltage is maintained constant against

line and load variations. Thus, the sensitivity of the system to parameter variations is improved.

VALIDATION OF POWER QUALITY PARAMETERS IN MODERN 12-PULSE CONVERTERS USING PSCAD AND EXPERIMENTAL DATA
A. N. Arvindan, and N. Janani Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, SSN College of Engineering, Anna University, Chennai, INDIA janani44@gmail.com Abstract: This paper is an attempt to validate power quality parameters in the state-of-the art 12pulse line commutated converters (LCCs) that use two-quadrant switches (2QSWs) rather than the conventionally used thyristors (SCRs). Each 2SQW comprises an IGBT connected in series with a power diode. The justification for this is, the IGBT, apart from being a self-commutating device unlike the SCR which is a self-latching one, has very small turn-on and turn-off times compared to those of the SCR. Each 12-pulse converter system comprises a three-phase three winding transformer of vector configuration Yy0d11. The two secondary windings of the transformer provide two three-phase line voltages that are mutually displaced by 30. Two 6pulse LCCs, fed by the secondary windings of the Yy0d11 transformer, are cascaded on the DC side to provide a twelve pulse output. The 12-pulse LCC topology thus comprises two 6-pulse LCCs that are series cascaded. Each 6-pulseLCC has six 2QSWs. The 12-pulse LCC has been simulated in the rectification and inversion modes for various firing angles using PSCAD for ascertaining the power quality parameters. Experimental data for rectification operation of the 12-pulse LCC has been presented.

supply fundamental frequency. Adjustable speed drives (ASDs)

are main sources of

interharmonics generation in the supply system which are widely used in industries. ASDs consist of a three phase diode bridge rectifier, dc link and a voltage source inverter. Interharmonics have undesirable effects on other power system equipments. So it is necessary to minimize interharmonics. This paper presents a novel method for mitigation of interharmonics. Abstract: This paper presents a double half bridge resonant inverter for induction heating system composed of two partly coupled coils. Induction coils are electrically characterized by their electrical equivalents, usually a series RL circuit, where the inductance is determined by the magnetic energy stored in the system and the resistance is associated with the power dissipated in the load. Pulse width modulation based control strategy for double half bridge resonant inverter based power supply circuit is presented to obtain a high power density solution with detailed analysis. The aim of this paper is to obtain the electrical equivalent of the inductor system for accurate power study with two concentric coil taking into effect the frequency dependent eddy current losses associated with both pan and coil. This paper gives new control modes taking advantage of the coupling between coils in order to provide the target output power with improved power distribution. The performed analysis includes the description of the operation and control strategy principle. The power converter is designed. Simulation results are presented to prove the performance of the double half bridge inverter for partly coupled induction heating coil.

Abstract: Nowadays the necessity of power factor correction (PFC) circuits are essential in ac to dc converters. The Harmonics introduced due to non sinusoidal current drawn by the diode rectifiers can be avoided if the circuit includes active PFC circuits. The objective is to regulate the output dc voltage and improving the source current wave shape to sinusoidal and to be in phase with the supply voltage which in turn improves input power factor. In this paper, the operation of conventional boost converter and bridgeless boost converter in power factor improvement is discussed and the performance parameters are compared. In the closed loop control, suitable peak current mode controller is included for wave shaping and PI controller is designed for voltage regulation. The simulation is executed using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results shows nearly unity power factor and better output voltage regulation for wide range of input voltage variation and load variation. The losses and efficiency comparison also made for performance analysis.

Abstract : An AC/AC converter with high frequency isolation is termed as a power electronic transformer PET). Of the various topologies of electronic PETs, this paper describes the modeling and simulation of an electronic transformer adopting matrix converter on either side of the high frequency isolation transformer. The simulation is carried out using the industry standard power system simulation package PSACD/EMTDC. The PET can convert a sinusoidal AC to a lower or higher voltage and/or to a lower or higher frequency without DC link. Both of the steady state and transient performance of the converter is presented. The simulation results indicate that the converter accomplishes high frequency isolation, bidirectional power flow, two stage power conversion, higher power density, controllable input source displacement power factor, and lower harmonic distortion on both input and output sides.

Abstract: In this paper, the topology for new multilevel inverter is proposed. The proposed topology significantly reduces the number of component and switches as the number of output voltage levels increases. To synthesize maximum levels at the output voltage and to reduce the total harmonic distortion (THD), control strategies of absolute and non absolute PWM techniques are proposed. The operation and performance of the proposed multilevel inverter have been analysed and simulated in the MATLAB\SIMULINK software and the results are

presented for single-phase multilevel inverter for different voltage levels. The objective of New Multilevel Inverter gives higher output voltage with less harmonic distortion due to less number of switches.

lkana0@yahoo.com, praveenkumaristhbest@gmail.com Abstract: In the commercial sector single-phase, non-linear loads are predominant and their numbers are on the increase. These low-power loads include conventional single-phase power supplies, switch mode power supplies, fluorescent lamps, heating elements and; pumps and motors for ventilation, air-conditioning and elevators. The two-pulse diode bridge rectifier is the most popular single-phase topology deployed for ac-dc conversion of electrical energy; however, when feeding an inductive load, itsline current has a total harmonic distortion (THD) of around 28%, thatis a gross violation of contemporary power quality standards. Another concern is the presence of triplen harmonics including the third in the linecurrent that add up in the neutral conductor. This paper reports distortion reduction by elimination of triplen harmonics and mitigationof non-triplen harmonics in the line currents using a delta-wye transformer between the three-phase utility and the diode bridge rectifiers. The efficacy of the technique is proved by MATLAB simulations considering the bridge rectifiers with and without the delta-wye transformer of vector group Dy1. Experimental results without and with the Dy1 transformer feeding the diode bridge rectifier are presented. Keywords: delta-wye transformer, power quality, single-phase rectifier, total harmonic distortion, triplen harmonics.

Abstract: Electricity demand exceeds the supply leading to regional blackout. The power generated is transmitted through a large network and significant power losses in transmission and distribution feeders. Loss reduction through various methods has the potential to yield huge savings in economic growth and environmental impact. One such effective loss minimization method is to inject reactive power by placing shunt capacitors at appropriate places with proper size. A Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) methodology is proposed in this work to identify the appropriate size of shunt capacitors by taking the objective as minimizing the cost associated with real power losses along with installation cost of shunt capacitors in an unbalanced radial distribution network (URDN). The bus voltage limits, number/size of installed capacitors at each node are taken as constraints. A two stage methodology is adopted in this work to get the solution of the optimization problem. In the first stage, the voltage stability index (VSI) values at each bus is computed and the node with minimum value of VSI is identified as the most receptive node to voltage slump and such a node is considered as candidate node for installation of shunt capacitors. In the second stage the HSA methodology is used to ascertain the suitable capacitor size. The backward / forward sweep algorithm based Radial distribution load flow (BFLF) algorithm is utilized for power flow simulation. The proposed Harmony Search Algorithm (HSA) is implemented on the modified IEEE 37 bus URDN. Abstract: Insulating barriers in high voltage insulation systems has been exploited widely since it is evinced during studies related to composite insulations. Barriers have found utility in a variety of power apparatus for protection against direct lightning strokes, as an interface at the boundaries of composite insulation materials etc. Though investigations have been carried out by researchers on the breakdown characteristics, barrier position in the gap, influence of space charge etc these are found pertinent to classical testing procedures only. Advent of high speed switching devices in power systems provides avenues to investigate the effect of insulation performance due to High Frequency High Voltage (HFHV) also. Further, uncharacteristic failures in oil filled distribution transformers reported in the recently indicated fast transients as the major cause for failures which was not revealed during classical laboratory testing. This research focuses on the influence and effects of solid insulating barriers placed in transformer oil due to HFHV in inhomogeneous fields. Test cell arrangement has been fabricated for carrying out experimental investigations to adhere international standards. Exhaustive experimentation has been made to infer the influence of the position of barrier, nature of field and breakdown voltage, erosion characteristics of the barrier at an appropriate range of frequencies. A detailed comparison between HFHV and classical power frequency voltage has been carried out. The nature of ionization at the barrier interface and the subsequent increase in the breakdown voltage as explained by Double Electric Layer (DEL) theory has been cross validated.

Abstract: Healthiness of a power transformer is very vital in todays developing world for ensuring reliable and quality power supply to consumers. Transformer insulation fails mainly due to ingress of moisture for which traditional methods have been utilized to determine the moisture content in oil. Yet, identification of moisture which impregnates into the paper/ pressboard insulation based on non destructive technique is still a complex task. Polarization Depolarization Current (PDC) analysis is an emerging and a reliable technique with which the moisture ingress can be clearly identified whereby the flaw can be effectively discriminated (whether in oil or pressboard) while the conventional methods (Breakdown Voltage Test on oil sample) identify moisture in oil only. In this research study an attempt is made to develop a simplified insulation model of a transformer and an experimental setup is implemented for acquiring the PDC waveforms which indicates and signifies the variations when the capacitance of the transformer dielectric system varies.

Abstract: One of the major concerns in electrical distribution system is power quality. The power quality enhancement is very mandatory with the newer generation load equipments, whose performance is very sensitive to power quality disturbances especially with voltage sag, Harmonics and Interruption. The power electronic based power conditioning devices can be the effective solution to enhance the quality of the power supplied to the power distribution system. The Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is one of the series connected Custom Power device which is used to regulate the load voltage during unbalanced condition and voltage sag. In this paper, the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) controlled DVR is designed and the performance of the rectifier load connected system is investigated with conventional Proportional Integral (PI) controller. The Levenberg-Marquardt Back propagation algorithm is used to implement the control scheme of the VSI. The ANN is trained offline using data from conventional PIcontroller. In addition to the compensation of voltage sag and harmonics, DVR is also used to protect a sensitive load from the distortion in the supply side voltage. The performance of the proposed DVR system is modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK and the comprehensive result of the PI and ANN controllers are also presented. Abstract: Performance and serviceable life of oil filled transformers are primarily governed by the behavior of insulating oil. Such transformers, during operation, may experience several stress evolving operating conditions. Deterioration in theperformance of oil filled transformers are directly associated with the degradation of oil during the course of operation with different loading conditions. Further, the oil characteristics undergo appreciable variations since the chemical compositions in the oil are subjected to variations. Partial Discharges (PD) in insulating oil is one of the proven indices which exhibit the changing characteristics of oil. PD activity in oil insulating medium is influenced by several factors that are invariably directly correlated to the physics and chemistry of the insulant. The proposed article focuses on assessing the dynamics of PD activity in different transformer oil insulations under different applied voltages. Various categories of iso-paraffin base and naphthenic base transformer oil have been taken into consideration which include new untreated oil, thermally degraded oil, oil degraded with transient signals and mixture of oil with solid dielectric materials. Detailed analysis based on experimental studies reveals that the dynamics of PD activity in degraded oil display unique discharge signatures when compared with new untreated oil. Also, it is evident that the PD activity is enhanced with the oil which contains a mixture of solid dielectric materials and with thermally degraded oil. Keywords : Oil Insulation, Partial Discharge

Abstract: In this research an attempt is made to compare the breakdown characteristics of epoxy nano-composites with that of a base epoxy resin under the influence of divergent yet essential types of electric fields so as to obtain inferences on its performances. This would in turn enable providing solutions to acquire more effective electrical insulation systems and explore the prospect of tapping the merits of utilizing the rapid strides made in field of fabrication of nanodielectrics. The main objective is such studies are to enhance the electrical properties of the epoxy dielectric by employing nano-fillers such as SiO2, TiO2 etc. This research envisages the use of epoxy resin mixed with nano-fillers for ascertaining the ability of the nano-composite to be utilized as a dielectric/ insulator in power apparatus. The epoxy resin is mixed with appropriate proportion of SiO2 and TiO2 and experimentation is carried out under the influence of divergent electric fields. Classical breakdown voltage withstand tests such as AC power frequency, DC voltage, lightning impulse and switching impulse test is carried out on epoxy dielectrics (with and without nano-fillers) and the results are compared. In addition, a nonclassical breakdown voltage test (high frequency high voltage) is also devised to analyze and ascertain the breakdown characteristics due to varying frequencies so as to investigate the possibility of utilizing such nano-composites in applications related to high speed switching devices. Abstract: This Paper quantifies and finds solution to reduce Source Harmonics and to improve the power factor in thermal power stations The harmonic analysis ,the power factor improvement and its mitigation techniques are being carried out in load side, and Thermal stations which the source is not been carried in extensive manner. This paper discusses one way for mitigating the problem. The Thermal Power stations are consuming 9% of the power it produces for its auxiliaries, for the power generation process. These auxiliaries are inductive loads and have the poor power factor. For catering the need of its auxiliaries, Thermal Power plants are having its own power system constituting auxiliary buses. These auxiliary Buses often have the switching events of M.V. equipments and modulation of them by automatic control Loops. It also has the computer network systems for its Digitally Distributed Control systems, UPS and Battery Chargers. All these produce Harmonics and the power system of the Thermal Power Stations and operating at poor power factor. These Harmonic components causes the M.V. motor coil

insulation failures, freakish operation of the Control Loops also causes the spurious tripping of the thermal power Units caused by Digital Control System malfunction. This paper aims at quantifying the THD and mitigating the problem by the use of modular multi level VSC MMC HVDC (MC) system and finding out the results by the MATLAB simulation technique. Abstract: This paper deals with the real time protection and monitoring of power system entities by making use of ARM controller LPC 1343 and ZigBee transceiver network for communication. This real time monitoring is achieved by continuous transfer of information attained from temperature sensor, humidity sensor, voltage sensor, current sensor and gas level sensors which are implemented on the power system entity to be protected. This set up is mainly to sense various operational and electric parameters of the power system entity and send the information continuously to the controller and the controller in turn sends the information to the operator or monitoring unit through ZigBee networks and optic cables. The ZigBee network makes use of a shortest path to preempt any fault that occurs in the individual ZigBee. The

shortest path algorithm can be implemented by means of a Genetic Algorithm. On the event of occurrence of a fault, there are two possible actions in the system. They are predictive analysis which predicts the fault based on the system data and acts accordingly to reduce large scale damage. The next type of action is the preventive analysis involves instant action required to be taken by the controller without the intervention of the main system. Thus it solves the problems present in the communicatively crippled power system.

Abstract: The focus of this paper is to fabricate the membrane and observe the performance of Multi wall carbon nanotubes and functionalised Multi wall carbon nanotubes to Nafion. Nafion is a membrane which is an ionic polymer used in fuel cells. It possesses enormous protons during conduction across the membrane in order to facilitate the oxidation-reduction reactions that take place in a power generating fuel cell. The proton conductivity of Nafion is reduced at high temperatures such as 100 degrees Celsius and low relative humidity such as 50%. There are advantages to operating Nafion at these conditions, such as in real world applications, where the conditions will not always be optimal. Carbon nanotubes have been found to allow water and proton transport through the filled inner confined space. The purpose of this research is to improve the conductivity of proton in fuel cell using additives in Nafion that will help to maintain a consistent saturation level in Nafion at dehydrating condition. In this work, the proton conductivity has been tested of Nafion with various percentage of Multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and functionalised Multi wall carbon nanotubes (FMWCNT).The experimental results shows the improved conductivity of proton in functionalised MWCNT.

Abstract: Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT) is an efficient robust control design used in frequency domain which takes into account the uncertainty that present in the process and its environment and reduces the complexity of design. Further, less conservation solutions than H or - synthesis are obtained by QFT method. The study of missile autopilots with special emphasis on roll autopilot is carried out. The missile is roll stabilized and has a cruciform wing configuration. Only stabilization in the vertical plane is considered using an autopilot that

operates the control surfaces. An autopilot is a closed loop system which is a minor loop inside the main guidance loop. This work aims to design a single robust controller based on QFT that meets all specifications regarding the stability and disturbances.

Abstract: This paper covers the effective utilization of the computer system for the people with severe disabilities, thereby making use of their head movements in placing a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems) sensor placed with an apparatus attached to the human face. This low cost design requirement needs a MEMS sensor, Micro Controller (ATMELAT89C51), ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) and a PC (Personal Computer). In todays world several advanced techniques are available for persons with severe disabilities but this method proves to be trust worthy for the people without alteration of their body parts. Sensors are externally attached without bringing any harm to people. The analog output from the sensor is given to the Microcontroller which uses ADC for the conversion of digital signal. The Microcontroller is programmed based on the algorithm for generating the command signal. The command signal is issued to the PC with the use of serial communication (RS 232C). Using this interface, the cursor of the mouse is programmed to move accordingly on the screen. This design incorporates the idea of using a MEMS sensor fastened to the chin of the person. It allows flexible control of input motion to the mouse connected to the computer.

Abstract: Photo transduction in human eye can be segmented into different electrical components by proper analysis of their work on the action potential with electrophysiological studies. According, to the computational retinal model proposed by J.H.Van Hateren. He has almost attained the aim of mimicking the human visual system as an electrical device, as to suit the use for retinal implants in future. However, it did suffer with chromaticity adaptation and existence of after-image. This article concentrates in studying the model by simulating it with different values and stating why generic value fit is taken into consideration, while others are not. The choice of generic value for inactivation reaction of photopigment and phosphodiesterase is reasoned in greater detail. And other parameters values are constants and nonlinearities which are discussed with their work on the output ERG, in order to get the perfect fit. Abstract: This paper presents a comparison of PI and fuzzy logic controller for the closed loop control of BLDC motor. The fuzzy logic controller is developed using fuzzy logic tool box in MATLAB. Also here a single current sensor technique is proposed for closed loop current control. For closed loop current control, the motor phase currents are measured using current sensors. These sensors are expensive and usually have different current sensitivity. These drawbacks can be avoided by using a single current sensor placed on the DC link. Here an algorithm is presented to obtain the phase current values from the DC link current. The BLDC motor is modelled and simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK. PI and fuzzy controller based closed loop speed control of BLDC motor using the new single current sensor technique was studied through simulations and desired performance obtained. The comparison of simulation results shows that the fuzzy controller gives better speed accuracy than PI controller.

DESIGN OF MULTI REGION FUZZY LOGIC CONTROLLER FOR pH PROCESS

V. Gomathi School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering SASTRA University. gomathi@eie.sastra.edu

Abstract: In chemical industry, the control of pH process is very difficult, because of more nonlinearities present in the system. So nonlinear controllers like fuzzy logic controllers are suitable for this type of processes when compared to conventional controllers, because conventional control schemes is not giving adequate performance at all operating points. In this paper, initially PI based fuzzy logic controller is designed for controlling the pH in the reactor by varying the acid flow rate and considering base as the disturbance, which is not giving better performance in the highly nonlinear region. So multiregional fuzzy logic controller can be designed and implemented in order to get satisfactory performance in all regions (Low, Medium, High). Finally the servo and the regulatory responses of multi region fuzzy logic controller and PI based fuzzy logic controller are compared.
