al vez hoy suene ridculo pero durante la Edad Media se crea que los zurdos eran ms propensos a cometer crmenes o que estaban posedos por el diablo. En la actualidad, por suerte, ya no se piensa de esa manera pero an persisten algunas dudas: por qu una persona es zurda o diestra? Todava existen diversas incgnitas en torno a los zurdos? Ms all de estos misterios para la ciencia, la realidad es que quienes pertenecemos al 10% de la poblacin zurda debemos acomodarnos a un mundo diseado para diestros; y adems a aceptar ser sealados como esos bichos raros que hacen todo al revs o de la manera ms complicada. Algunos tal vez irnicamente- dicen que los zurdos somos ms inteligentes y un halo de misterio nos rodea; pero, obviamente, se trata de supuestos no comprobados cientficamente, y eso a veces nos hace creer que simplemente es algo as como un premio consuelo a la minora. No quieseira caer en el dramatismo pero hay un tema que hay que atender: un poco ms de 4 millones de argentinos debemos hacer malabares a la hora de realizar tareas tan sencillas como pasar la tarjeta en el subte, descorchar una botella o escribir sobre un pupitre, cosas que no est mal recordarlo- estn diseadas para diestros. Nuestra cultura est organizada segn los parmetros de los diestros, afirma la doctora y pediatra Lorena Romano. El mouse que no llega hasta el lado izquierdo

del teclado, escribir a 45 grados, agarrar el lpiz como si fusemos Cuasimodo, lastimarnos con los cuadernos espiralados, o simplemente, ser vistos de mala manera por saludar con la mano izquierda y podran seguir los ejemplos. Prrafo aparte merece la lucha contra todo lo que implique girar algo: destornilladores, picaportes, abrelatas o sacacorchos; todo gira en el sentido contrario al de un zurdo. Mi mayor problema es al comer. Adems de que parezco muy torpe con los cubiertos, ms de una vez me pas de sacarle la copa al que se sienta conmigo a la izquierda; y ni hablar de lo complicado que puede ser quedarse en el medio de la mesa, sobre todo con un diestro a la izquierda, relata Paola (32), una de las tantas zurdas que hay por todos lados. Hoy en da, adems de que existe una mayor aceptacin y ya no se los obliga a pasar horas y horas practicando el uso de la mano derecha, existen diversas tiendas reales y virtuales para facilitar estos suplicios diarios. La primera fue Anything Left-Handed, en Londres, mientras que en nuestro pas el pionero en crear una tienda virtual zurdo-friendly fue Nstor Maldonado, fundador de Tienda de Zurdos: la creamos con mi esposa Anala en agosto de 2006, bsicamente porque siendo zurdo renegaba por no poder utilizar algunos artefactos de manera cmoda y eficiente. As es como hoy los zurdos podemos conseguir desde escuadras con

la escala numrica de derecha a izquierda, tijeras, sacapuntas, palos de golf, o juegos de naipes con las marcas del palo en las cuatro esquinas. Eso s, el precio de estos productos es casi el doble que en el caso de los diestros. Para Pablo (24), el ser zurdo no fue una complicacin, sino un desafo constante. Cansado de mancharse la mano con la tinta de la lapicera hizo lo que an hoy considera su mejor invento: estaba en cuarto grado y encontr la solucin a mi problema: un ojalillo. S, cada maana Andrs se sentaba y se colocaba uno de esos papelitos adhesivos en la mitad del dedo meique y as eso le serva de secador de tinta. Lo repona varias veces al da, as como mi paciencia al escuchar las burlas de mis compaeros. Segn explica la doctora Romano, los chicos son zurdos desde su nacimiento a causa de una configuracin cerebral. Sin embargo, todava hoy es una gran interrogante al porqu hay mayor cantidad de personas diestras: Por el momento, lo que s se puede aseverar es que existe una influencia gentica: un nio tiene 10% de probabilidades de ser zurdo si su padre lo es, el 20% si lo es la madre y el 50% por ciento si lo son ambos. Por su parte, el director del Instituto de Neurologa Cognitiva (INECO) y del Instituto de Neurociencias de la Fundacin Favaloro, Facundo Manes, explica que diferentes investigaciones han mostrado

que la lateralizacin est asociada a factores genticos, hormonales, de desarrollo e, incluso, culturales. Aunque aclara que la creencia tiene una parte de realidad y otra de mito, Manes reconoce: "Hay una tendencia a etiquetar a los zurdos como ms talentosos en algunas actividades". Entonces, ya que la ciencia nos deja un hueco de duda, no es difcil alimentar el mito sobre la inteligencia y sensibilidad de los zurdos. Si somos ms inteligentes y creativos? No se sabe, pero la realidad es que la lista de talentos que demostraron hacer magia con su cuerpo o con su mente es interminable. Madame Curie, Miguel ngel, Rafael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Aristteles, Napolen Bonaparte, Beethoven, Mahatma Gandhi, Bill Gates, Charles Chaplin, los presidentes norteamericanos Bill Clinton y Barack Obama, y hasta Jack el destripador, son algunos ejemplos de los zurdos que hicieron historia. Personajes como Ned Flanders el verdadero pionero en crear una tienda para zurdos o de la literatura, como Athos, tambin eran zurdos. Pero luchar con la izquierda y ser incluso desventaja para vos: un zurdo es muy molesto para las personas que no estn prevenidas, le advierte a Dartagnan en Los tres mosqueteros. Y hasta en el deporte, algunos se pasaron de bando y se convirtieron en zurdos artificiales para favorecer el efecto sorpresa o porque en esa mano desarrollaron ms fuerza. Tal es el caso de Rafael Nadal en tenis, o Phil Mickelson en el golf, diestros que slo al jugar prefieren usar su mano izquierda. En el combate, al diestro se le dificulta ms porque estn peleando en espejo y eso al zurdo lo beneficia. Adems, el zurdo est acostumbrado a cambiar la guardia y pelea ms de las dos maneras que el

diestro, explica Maximiliano lvarez, profesor de Kick Boxing. Y Julieta Demarco, profesora de educacin fsica y asistente pedaggica, coincide: La caracterstica del zurdo es que es excepcional, al ser minora tiene una ventaja. Perceptivo o real, la historia nos regal deportistas brillantes que son zurdos. Sin embargo, la enseanza de maestro a zurdo no es nada sencilla, remarca el periodista deportivo Julin Martnez. Segn explica

Demarco, de acuerdo a los programas escolares o deportivos, se debera buscar un desarrollo armnico de los dos lados, pero la realidad es que todo est preparado para aquel que es diestro. Limitaciones? Demarco niega que las haya, pero aclara que todo depende del entrenador deportivo. Por lo general, el profesor de la escuela, salvo que sea zurdo, no genera posibilidades para el chico que es zurdo. Sin ir ms lejos, los bancos de la escuela para zurdos aparecieron hace 10 aos. Es algo moderno, cuando en realidad debera de haber sido una necesidad anterior. Un zurdo tena que adaptarse como si tuviese una dificultad y no es as, seala. Para algunos, es esa adaptacin constante y el enfrentar obstculos a diario lo que genera que los zurdos encuentran formas ms creativas para resolver problemas y desarrollar nuevas estrategias. Sin embargo, Manes vuelve a derribar el mito: La lateralidad cerebral es compleja y el comportamiento humano no puede explicarse solamente por estas cualidades. Si no, debera existir un 10% de la poblacin en el mundo que fuesen Leonardo, Mozart, Einstein o Messi y est visto que, para ser cualquiera de ellos, se necesita algo ms que preferir un lado sobre el otro.

lefties were more likely to commit crimes or be possessed by the devil. Today, luckily, people no longer believe that, but some questions remain: What makes people left or right handed? What is still unknown about lefties? Mysteries to science aside, the reality is that those who belong to the 10% of left-handed people must adapt to a world designed for righties, as well as being set apart as weirdos who do everything back to front or a more complicated way. Some - perhaps ironically - believe that lefties are smarter and that a halo of mystery surrounds us; obviously the assumption is scientifically unproven, sometimes making us think that it is just a consolation prize. I don't want to be dramatic but there is something we must address: just over 4 million Argentines are faced with a challenge when it comes to simple tasks such as swiping their card on the subway, opening a bottle of wine, or writing at a desk - they are all designed for righties. "Our culture is oriented towards the needs of the right-handed," says pediatrician Dr. Lorena Romano. The mouse doesn't reach the left side of the keyboard, we have to hold the pencil at 45 degrees, as if we were Quasimodo, to write in spiral-bound notebooks or simply be seen as impolite when we offer our left hand for a handshake...to name but a few examples. I could write a whole paragraph on anything that involves turning something: screwdrivers, doorknobs, tin openers and corkscrews they all turn in the opposite direction to that of a lefty. "My biggest problem is when it comes to eating. Apart from looking very awkward with silverware, I often accidently drink from the glass of the person sitting to my left, and not to mention how difficult sitting in the middle of the table can be, especially with a righty to my left," says Paola (32), one of many left-handers. Today, in addition to a greater acceptance and not being forced to spend hours and hours practicing the use of our right hand, there are several real and virtual stores to make these daily tortures easier. The first was "Anything LeftHanded" in London, while in Argentina the pioneer in creating a lefty-friendly online store was Nstor Maldonado, founder of "Tienda de Zurdos": "I created it with my wife, Anala, in August, 2006, mainly because, being a lefty, she was unable to comfortably and efficiently use some things." Today lefties can get anything from set squares with the numbers from right to left, scissors, pencil sharpeners, golf clubs, to playing cards with the suits on all four corners. Of course, they cost almost double. Pablo (24) sees his left-handedness as a constant challenge. Tired of always having an ink stain down the side of his hand, he created something that he considers his greatest invention: "I was in fourth grade and I found the 'solution' to my problem: hole reinforcers." Every morning Pablo stuck a hole reinforcer on his little finger and used it to dry the ink. "I changed it several times a day, much to the amusement of my classmates." Dr. Romano explains that children are left-handed from birth due to the way their brains are formed. However, we still don't know why there are so many right-handed people: "At the moment we believe that there is a genetic influence: a child has a 10% chance of being lefthanded it their father is, a 20% chance if their mother is, and a 50% chance if both parents are." Neurology (INECO) and the Institute of Neurosciences, Fundacin Favaloro, Facundo Manes, explains that: "Several studies have shown that handedness is associated with genetic, hormonal, developmental, and even cultural factors." Although he says that the belief is one part reality and another part myth. He explains: "There is a tendency to label left-handed people as more talented in some activities." The gap in science means it is not difficult to feed the myth about the intelligence and sensitivity of lefties. But are we really more intelligent and creative? Nobody knows, but the truth is that the list of lefties who have demonstrated exceptional skills is endless. Madame Curie, Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Pablo Picasso, Aristotle, Napoleon Bonaparte, Beethoven, Mahatma Gandhi, Bill Gates, Charlie Chaplin, US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, and even Jack the Ripper, are examples of lefties who have made history. Characters like Ned Flanders - the true pioneer in creating a store for lefties and literary characters such as Athos, were also lefties. "I will take the left hand...And it will be even a disadvantage to you; a left-handed man is very troublesome to people who are not prepared for it," warns D'Artagnan in The Three Musketeers. And in sports, some people have even turned themselves into "artificial lefties" to gain an edge by developing that hand more strongly. This is the case of Rafael Nadal in tennis and Phil Mickelson in golf, right-handed players who prefer to use their left hand. "In combat, it is more difficult for the right-hander because they are fighting back to front and this is beneficial for

the lefty. The lefty is used to changing hands and fights better using both hands than the righty," explains Maximiliano Alvarez, kick boxing teacher. Julieta Demarco, PE teacher and teaching assistant, agrees: "Lefties are characterized by being exceptional, as they are the minority they have an advantage." "Whether real or not, history has given us some brilliant left-handed athletes. However, teaching a lefty is not easy," explains Julin Martnez, sports journalist. Demarco explains: "school and sports programs tell us that we should focus equally on both hands, but the reality is that everything is prepared for the right-handed." What about limitations? Demarco denies that any exist, but he clarifies that it all depends on the sports coach. "Unless the teacher is also a lefty, they do not usually give the left-handed pupils any special opportunities. School desks for left-handed students only came about 10 years ago. It's something modern when in fact they were need earlier. Left-handed students had to adapt as if they had a difficulty, which they don't," he says. For some people, it is the constant adaptation and facing of daily obstacles which leads lefties to be more creative and develop new problem solving strategies. However, Manes doesn't believe the myth: "Handedness is complex and human behavior cannot be explains just by that. If it were true, then 10% of the population would be Da Vincis or Mozarts, Einsteins, or Messis, and to be one of them you need more than just preferring one side over another."

El nmero 10 luce por s solo y cuando el portador es zurdo, el brillo es suficiente como para encantar. El por qu, no es nada sencillo de responder aunque ya en cualquier pan y queso de barrio, ser zurdo es sinnimo de ser elegido entre las primeras opciones. En principio porque son pocos, y luego, porque siempre parece ms bello y placentero ver y disfrutar de un jugador gambeteando, dando pases de magia o convirtiendo un gol con el pie izquierdo. Tambin son valiosos de destacar los virtuosos Larry Bird o Emanuel Ginbili en el bsquetbol, quienes parecen ms normales por ser estrellas en un deporte que se juega con las manos y no de otro planeta como los siempre reconocidos futbolistas Lionel Messi y Diego Maradona, quien adems de asombrar a todos

con su inigualable zurda, tambin dej su sello al hacer un gol en un mundial nada ms ni nada menos que con la mano. Cul? La izquierda, obviamente. The number 10 looks even better when the wearer is left-handed; the brightness draws you in. It's hard to say why but, wherever you look, being left-handed is synonymous with being picked first. In principle it's because there are fewer of them, but it is always more beautiful and enjoyable to watch a player dribbling, doing tricks, or scoring a goal with their left foot. It is also worth highlighting basketball players Larry Bird and Emanuel Ginobili, who appear more normal as their sport is played with the hands.
