Founded in 1899 as a private, liberal arts

college, Tarleton joined The Texas A&M University System in 1917 and is now one of the states fastest growing institutions with an enrollment approaching 9,000. Serving as the educational and cultural flagship of the Cross Timbers region, Tarleton is located in Stephenville, just one hour from the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. With a population of about 16,500, Stephenville is known as one of the countrys most desirable places to live and is included in Norman Cramptons The 100 Best Small Towns in America published by Prentice Hall. Tarletons 168-acre main campus includes a new $32 million, four-story science facility which includes a planetarium and observation control center for a research-grade robotic telescope/observatory located at Tarletons Hunewell ranch just outside Stephenville. Most recent additions to the growing campus are new student apartments and a new residence hall with housing for more than 550 students. Current construction projects include a new student recreational sports facility, a new dining hall and major renovations to the library.

All students majoring in Biology have the opportunity to use the DNA analysis system, either for coursework or individual research projects. Vertebrate and invertebrate teaching and research collections housing thousands of specimens. An herbarium housing teaching and research specimens. Field research by undergraduate and graduate students has tripled the number of plant specimens over the last five years. Walk-in cold room, incubators, and growth chamber for teaching and research in microbiology, biotechnology, and plant physiology. Greenhouse facilities. Modern light and electron microscopy laboratories. Diverse course offerings Core courses include General Biology, Microbiology, and Heredity. Advanced and elective courses cover all areas of biology, from the molecular level to the organismal and environmental level. Well-qualified faculty All hold advanced degrees in their discipline and many have active research programs that provide opportunities for undergraduate research. Student-centered culture An active chapter of Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, encourages student membership and participation. The Tarleton Journal of Student Research and Student Research Symposium provides undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to publish and present their research.
