Employer:

The Gnomon Certicate program changed my life. Only a month after leaving the program I got my rst job at Naughty Dog working on Uncharted 2: Among thieves.
I had no idea that my first game would be ranked as the best game of the year and I wouldnt have had a chance at a place like this without a school like Gnomon. I dont believe that there is a better place to go if you want to learn CG at a level that will allow you to go out into the world and start working in games and film. The program is intense and so immersive that I learned more in 3 months there than I did over an entire year teaching myself. The core program gives you a strong backbone and with the integration of electives students are able to choose an individual focus as well. The instructors are top notch and they teach more than just the tools they also share their experiences and their advice about working in the industry; something that is totally invaluable. Going to Gnomon was the best decision I have ever made and I only wish that I had known about this place sooner.

Gnomons Certificate Program is an accelerating and inspiring experience that I am grateful to have gone through. It provided me with the resources and opportunities necessary to jump start a career as a visual effects artist. When I began working in the industry, I felt well prepared because much of what I did at Gnomon was exactly what I was doing on the job. The school is very in touch with the industry- from the people involved to its facilities to its location. The tools and techniques are current and often times ahead of the industry. Having them taught by people who are currently working in the entertainment industry is invaluable. While at Gnomon, I learned a trade and grew as an artist which are the two things I had hoped to do. It was an exhausting and demanding experience but well worth it.

Comparing Gnomon to other visual eects schools is like comparing Hitchcocks Psycho to the Vince Vaughn version... why would you?
The Gnomon experience is a rare one indeed. Overall, I count my experience there as priceless. From the knowledge gained, to the life skills and friends made, without question, Gnomon was like the Wacom pen to my Intous 3. I dont really think of Gnomon as a school, but more like an organism that is constantly evolving. Gnomon breathes passion and creativity. The Gnomon School, the Gnomon Workshop and the Gnomon Gallery, all taking place on the school grounds, provide a lethal combination for any CG enthusiast. From the instructors to the students, there is a constant flow of information and knowledge that one would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. It was extremely refreshing to be surrounded by other people who were just as excited and obsessed with the same things as I was. When you have that kind of energy surrounding you at all times, combined with the iconic roster of instructors, latest technology and software.

Gnomons entire curriculum has been developed, tested and is taught by some of the most recognized CG professionals working in the industry. At no other school are the Directors, Advisory Board members and instructors more involved in the production process. They work and consult for studios such as DreamWorks, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Sony Interactive, Digital Domain, Electronic Arts, Activision, Rock Star Games, and Blizzard, just to name a few.

Real professionals. Real projects.

Gnomons goal has always been to create an educational environment unlike any other - to pioneer a more effective way to prepare students and professionals for their career in the computer graphics entertainment industry - to provide a real education. Gnomons instructors are working professionals who bring their passion and experience to the classroom. They know the importance of understanding how the real world operates and what a production pipeline looks like, to ensure our curriculum at Gnomon is always moving in tandem with the industry - wherever it might be headed. Our curriculum resembles this structure by taking our students through completion of collaborative and in-class projects. At Gnomon, students complete these projects, which is key in securing employment after graduation. Gnomon students are able to take their projects from the smallest element of an idea to fully formed reality; all using similar methods and workflow used everyday in the entertainment industry. This is the work our students will take with them after graduation, and use to impress a future employer.

What is Entertainment Design?

The films you watch, the TV shows you follow and the games you play are made by people who, for the most part, work at studios. Over the past decade, the entertainment industry has continued to grow with a steady demand for more qualified artists. As the entertainment industry matures and audiences demand an ever increasing level of realism, studios spend more money on qualified people. The growing entertainment industry represents an opportunity for artists unlike anything we have seen in the past hundred years. If you like to draw and believe that you have potential, then you too could one day be working on the next Starcraft, Bioshock, Battlestar Gallactica, Lord of the Rings, Wall-E or Avatar.

Industry Approved Curriculum

Gnomons Entertainment Design Track consists of twenty intensive drawing and design courses. Each class develops the students knowledge, technique, and understanding of the creative process.

College Degree or Gnomon?

Does a degree represent the difference between success and failure? In most career paths, it may. But in art, specifically art in the entertainment industries, success has little to do with a degree and more to do with your talent. Your portfolio, your network, references, desire and drive are what gets you the job. You need an educational environment that will develop and hone those skills. Gnomon excels in doing that.

Is One Year Enough?

The Entertainment Design track spans one year. Four years of traditional art college usually entails having summers off so you end up with eight semesters opposed to Gnomons track, which is four (although we call them terms). Therefore, with this track you will experience about half of the normal college course load. Where things get more complicated and we recommend doing your research on this, is that most colleges will fill your course schedule with many classes that are potentially valuable but irrelevant to your direct career path. Additionally, many instructors you will find in a degree-granting art school may not be relevant industry professionals.

The 2D to 3D Path

Launched in 1998, the Digital Production for Entertainment Program (previously known as the High-End CG Certificate Program) has recently celebrated ten years of helping students enter the entertainment industry with graduates placed at most of the countries top VFX and Game studios. This program is designed to provide students with an in-depth technical and artistic understanding of the tools used in the visual effects, film, broadcast and gaming industries. Since its inception, Gnomon has adhered to a strict traditional drawing/design portfolio requirement for admission. It is for this reason that our placement rate is over 90%. It is also for this reason that Gnomons criteria for admission is so high. Every term we reject applicants whose drawing skills show potential, however, are undeveloped. The Entertainment Design track offers an opportunity for students to develop their portfolios for admission. It suffices to say that we and the industries that we serve strongly believe that the best 3D artists start with a strong traditional foundation.

Advisory Board
Over more than a decade, Gnomon has collaborated with many of the industrys top talent. It is through these relationships that we guarantee the quality of our programs. Our Advisory Board consists of professional artists who have proven their commitment to helping aspiring artists enter the industry.

Modeling and Texturing
Design and create digital assets for games, broadcast or film. As a modeling and texture artist you will create assets for these industries, with a strong understanding of form, texture, and detail. Assets may vary from a simple building to a complex mix of 3D elements for a movie or game. Supporting these concepts are fundamental classes on anatomy, sculpture, painting and design.

Character Animation

Animators are the actors of the game and visual effect industries. This track is loaded with animation-based classes that cover CG and traditional animation, stop motion animation and technical character rigging. Through performance, animators deliver emotion to a character be it humorous, sad, serious or somewhere in between.

Visual Eects Animation

Visual effects artists must create realistic elements that would be too costly, dangerous or impossible to capture on film. This track is perfect for the artist who wishes to work with all elements that comprise a visual effects shot. Classes concentrate on lighting and filming techniques, creation, tracking and compositing of elements, and the creation of both particle and dynamic effects.

3D Generalist

Not sure what area of digital production in which to excel? Our 3D Generalist track is perfect for exploring all aspects of 3D production. This track is an outgrowth of our long-standing High-End CG Certificate program. As with the former, this track covers all aspects of 3D production along with a strong visual art foundation. This program has plenty of allowances to choose elected specialty classes when further focus is desired.

Why Take Gnomon Online Courses?

Gnomon online training enables students from anywhere in the world with a broadband internet connection to access world-class digital entertainment production training by Hollywood instructors. Based on the same internationally-acclaimed curriculum and taught by working professionals, Gnomon online training is a flexible solution for students and professionals worldwide seeking top-level training.

Student work by Emil Besirevic

How it Works
Gnomon online courses have the same content as the on-campus courses at Gnomon in Hollywood and are taught by instructors who are professional production artists. Every week, a two to three hour video lecture is posted along with homework assignments. Students are to work on the assignments and hand it in before the due date. Every week, the instructor will review the assignment by actually opening your project files and giving a video critique of your assignment, so that you know exactly where to focus your attention. Gnomon online courses also use forums for communicating with other students and the instructor. Gnomon online courses are typically 10 weeks in duration (shorter 5 week courses are also available) and offered on a quarterly basis with start dates in January, April, July and September.

Programs and Training Options / Online Training

How is Gnomon Online Training Dierent from Other Online Training?

Gnomon online courses take the live courses that are offered on campus in Hollywood, but offer them in an online format. The courses are as intense as taking a course on-campus and it is expected that you will spend at least 10 hours a week on each course, to reach a level of proficiency that will prepare you for the challenges of real-world production. While many online training vendors offer software applications training online, typically these are lowcommitment courses or workshops and are not at the same level of instruction or intensity as Gnomon.

Is Online Best for Me?

Online is a flexible option for individuals who are motivated to learn and cant find this kind of entertainment production training locally. To succeed, students should be motivated to learn on their own and should allocate time during the week to watch lectures and work on assignments. It is recommended that students set aside about 10 hours a week per course.

Transfer Credits to a Gnomon Program

Because Gnomon online courses are the same as the courses on-campus, students can use the credits from online courses towards a full-time program such as the Digital Production for Entertainment two-year program. This enables students outside of Los Angeles to take Gnomon courses online, then transfer into a full-time program when they are able to relocate.

Instructors from the Industry

A school is truly defined by its faculty and curriculum. A truly comprehensive program is brought to life by instructors who are respected members of their field. As no one person can master every aspect of visual effects production, experienced individuals who each have their own areas of expertise teach our courses.

Going to Gnomon was quite possibly the best decision I have ever made. Not only did it give me an advantage in the production world but it introduced me to some of the most talented, intelligent people that I am proud to call my friends. Gnomons curriculum was well thought out, the instructors skilled and the students driven.

International Partnerships and Licensing What J.J. Abrams Says About Gnomon
I only wish that Gnomon had existed when I was a kid. I would have applied, and had I gotten in, I would have attended. Its that brilliant nexus of imagination and practical reality; a place where dreamers learn to realize, share and bring to life the visions in their heads. The latest and greatest technology is meaningless without inspired instruction. This is what Gnomon has in spades. Their professors and founders are people who truly inspire. They dont just teach the how tothey give you context, understanding and expectations of how to on the job. Theirs is a practical approach to actually working in lm, video and gaming. Its that amazing ideal, where art and making a living peacefully coexist. You can certainly become a successful working artist without Gnomon, but with their pedigree, placement stats, culture and track record, why take that chance?
