KCSE: WAMY High tops in biology

Nairobis WAMY High School continued with its consistence performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations by emerging the countrys top performing school in biology. In a similar fete in the 2012 examinations, the school took the honours as the best performing school in the country in the subjects of biology and history. In the 2013 KCSE examinations results released on Monday by the education cabinet secretary Jacob Kaimenyi also saw the School placed in position 23 in the national rankings. This was a slight drop from the 22nd position it achieved in the KCSE 2012 examinations though last years performance index improved to 73.588 points compared to the 72.992 points which was achieved in 2012. In the private schools category, Wamy High School secured the 6thth position, a one-step jump from the 7th position it achieved in the 2012 examinations. The school maintained its position as the best performing Muslim school in the country, a position it also held in the previous examinations. The school head teacher Shaban Ouma Omar attributed the success to a high degree of spiritual discipline saying that this has contributed tremendously to the students academic success. We strive to embody spirituality in the students and this has led to a high degree of discipline which has contributed to academic success, he told The Friday Bulletin. Our lessons starts with the Quran and this has inculcated Islamic moral standards among the students, he added. On his part, the World Assembly of Muslim Youth (WAMY) regional director Irshad Ibrahim said the collective efforts between the school stakeholders have helped to propel the institution to higher heights in academic success. KCSE: Wamy High tops the country in biology

board of governors, and parents coupled with support from the parent organisation, the World Assembly of Muslim Youth have worked in driving the institution to academic glory and ensuring consistence in performance, he said. Irshad said the organisation will continue supporting the cause of the education of Muslims in the country and pointed to the establishment WAMY Girls Secondary School which opened its doors this year as among the measures being taken by WAMY to improve on education in the community. Another perennial performer Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed an Nahyan Secondary and Technical School of Mombasa came in second place among Muslim schools. Nationally, it was ranked in position 91 while among private schools, it was placed in the 23rd position. The 2013 performance was a drop from the previous year when it was placed in position 81 in the national rankings. From being featured consistently among the 10 best performers in the private schools category, in recent years, the academic excellence of Sheikh Khalifa has gradually declined and it has to undertake more efforts, if it is to regain its past glory. Abu Hurairah Academy of Mombasa which has also featured among the ten best placed private schools also faces the same challenges as Sheikh Khalifa. In last years ranking it was placed in position 42 and for the first time since it joined the national ranking, its name did not feature in the list of the 100 best performing schools in the country. Other Muslim schools which were ranked in the top 100 private institutions included Memon High School of Mombasa which was ranked in position 31, Al istiqamah Academy and Tuition centre of Mombasa which was placed in position 36 and Nairobi Muslim Academy in position 61. In the rankings released by the media, Nairobi Muslim Academy which registered a performing index of 59.184 was erroneously listed among the list of district schools. Other top performers are Alim High school from Machakos county which was ranked in the 78th position, Arabuko Forest High School of Kilifi in the 86th position and Kenya Muslim Academy of Nairobi in position 95. Al Istiqama, Arabuko and Kenya Muslim Academy have for the first time joined the national charts. Significantly, nine Muslim schools entered the list of the top 100 private schools, the highest number so far. Notable absentees in the list were Don Bosco Secondary School and Maahad Academy both of Nairobi which had in recent years registered sterling performance in the KCSE examinations. Overall, Alliance High School took the honours as the best performing school in the country garnering a performance index of 81.783 points. It also produced the best student in the country Wanderi Tom Kingori. The best Muslim student was Naeem Abbas Essajee of Aga Khan High School in Mombasa who was ranked in position 20 nationally. Memon High School produced the best Muslim female student Zainab Noorani Muhammad who was placed in position 71 among the list of top students.

Hemed's case to proceed on Monday

A case filed jointly by civil societies and the family of Hemed Salim concerning his where about will resume on Monday March 10,in a Mombasa court. Hemed Salim is one of the many arrested when police raided Masjid Musa in Majengo on Sunday Feb 2,2014,however the police have delivered contradictory statements to his whereabouts. The police have admitted having arrested him but have further stated that he may have escaped while on the way to the police station together with others, initially they admitted to having him attending to medical care due to the injuries he sustained. The matter was first brought and heard in court on 17th February 2014 where judge Edward Mureithi sitting at Mombasa High Court ordered to have Hemed Salim be produced in court at 10.00 am. On 25th February 2014 in his ruling, judge Mureithi directed that inspector Evans Wesonga and police constable Owino Okuta who wrote the statement on the arrest and alleged subsequent escape of Hemed Salim be summoned to attend court to assist the court in arriving at a conclusive decision whether Hemed is in physical custody of the police or not. Last Friday 28th February 2014 saw the executive Director of Haki Africa testifying as a witness in the case of Hemed Salim. Mr Hussein Khalid appeared before the court after it was accepted that a video evidence made by him showing the arrest of Hemed by the police be presented before court as evidence. Mr Khalid was cross examined by both sides as to the authenticity of the video pictures in the CD he presented to court. On Wednesday this week advocate Yusuf Abubakar for Haki Africa went to Mombasa central police station for confirmation whether Hemed was booked. Meanwhile Khalid Hussein is calling for calm and peace to allow the court process to proceed to its logical conclusion for justice.

Da'wa
By Raya Shokatfard Through years of suffering persecution, exile and wars, Muslims finally began to rule the Arabian Peninsula by the year 10 A.H. - a year before the Prophets demise. As per the Prophets order, letters were written to kings and emperors in faraway lands inviting them to Islam. As for all Arabian tribes, the time had come to realize that there was no longer any power in Arabia to challenge the authority of the Islamic state in Madinah headed by Prophet Muhammad. Although there were some small skirmishes, the majority realized that it was only to be expected that the Arabian tribes should start to review their position. Many delegations arrived in Madinah, to ask many questions they had about the essential elements of the faith of Islam or to pledge their loyalty to the Prophet and declare their belief in Allahs oneness and the message of Muhammad.Among these delegations, which included many of major Arab tribes, some were asking for power, others for friendship with whole tribes declaring their acceptance of Islam. The Arrival of Christians The territory of Najran was located south of BaniKhatham near Yemen, about 450 miles south of Madinah. In response to a letter sent by Prophet Muhammad inviting them to Islam, they sent a delegation of 60 people to Madinah in order to get first-hand information about the Prophet. They were received in the Prophets mosque, and he allowed them to pray in the mosque, facing East. This group of Christians followed Byzantine rite, and their clans were supported financially by the Byzantine ruler. They had many questions that took many hours. They discussed the nature of Allah with the Prophet. He answered them by reciting from the Quran: Say: He is Allah, the One! Allah, the eternally Besought of all! He begets not nor was begotten. And there is none comparable unto Him. (Al Ikhlas 112: 1-4) There were disagreements about the nature of Prophet Jesus and his disputed divinity and being the son of Allah. Prophet Muhammad asked for time to clear their arguments, and by the morning of the next day the following verses were revealed to him, which he recited it to them. Jesus, in Allahs view, is the same as Adam, whom He had created from dust and said to him: Be, and he was there. This is the truth from your Lord. Be not, therefore, one of the doubters. Should anyone argue with you about him after what has been given to you of true knowledge, say to them: let us call in our children and your children, our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves. Let us then all pray Allah and ask that Allahs curse overwhelm the liars. (Al-Imran 3: 59-61) The Najran delegation refused to accept the above revelation about the nature of Jesus. Then Prophet Muhammad challenged them with the Quranic verses quoted above. It was a serious challenge, but they agreed to meet, at which time the Prophet took his daughter, Fatima, his son-in-law, Ali, and his two grandchildren Al-Hasan and Al-Husayin. For the Najran people, this meant that they risked being cursed by Allah. Such a prospect was not to be taken lightly. So, they declined the challenge. However, they asked for a peace treaty, which was offered by Prophet Muhammad the next day.Relying on what they knew of the Prophets fairness, they promised to accept those terms whatever they were without a question. A Treaty Signed The agreed provisions were as follows:In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent. This is what Muhammad, the Prophet and Allahs Messenger, has written down for the people of Najran when he has the authority over all their fruits, gold, silver, crops and slaves. He has benevolently left them all that in return for 2,000 hullas every year, 1,000 to be given in the month of Rajab and 1,000 in the month of Safar. (Each hulla is equal to one ounce, measure equal to 4 dirhams). The Najran are also required to provide accommodation and expenses for my messengers, for up to 20 days. None of my messengers shall be kept in Najran more than one month. They are also required to give, as a loan, 30 shields, 30 horses and 30

How Did Prophet Muhammad Treat Non-Muslims?

camels, in case of any disorder and treachery in Yemen. If anything is lost of the shields, horses or camels they loan to my messenger, it will remain owing by my messenger until it is given back. Najran has the protection of Allah and the pledges of Muhammad, the Prophet, to protect their lives, faith, land, property, those who are absent and those who are present, and their clan and allies. The Najrans need not change anything of their past customs. No right of theirs or their religion shall be altered. No bishop, monk or church guard shall be removed from his position. Whatever they have is theirs, no matter how big or small. They are not held in suspicion and they shall suffer no vengeance killing. They are not required to be mobilized and no army shall trespass on their land. If any of them requests that any right of his should be given to him, justice shall be administered among them. He who takes usury on past loans is not under my protection. No person in Najran is answerable for an injustice committed by another. The treaty provided religious and administrative autonomy for not only Christians but any non-Muslim citizen of the Islamic state. All sincere Muslim rulers have adhered to the founding principles of this treaty in managing the affairs of non-Muslim subjects for centuries. Protection for Saint Catherine Christians in Mount Sinai Prophet Muhammad was keen to bring to the attention of his followers and Muslim rulers that non-Islamic religious institutions should not be harmed. Here is a letter addressed to his emissary to the religious leaders of Saint Catherine in Mount Sinai who had sought the protection of the Muslims:This is a message from Muhammad ibn Abdullah, as a covenant to those who adopt Christianity, near and far, we are with them.Verily I, the servants, the helpers, and my followers defend them, because Christians are my citizens; and by Allah I hold out against anything that displeases them. No compulsion is to be on them. Neither are their judges to be removed from their jobs nor their monks from their monasteries. No one is to destroy a house of their religion, to damage it, or to carry anything from it to the Muslims houses. Should anyone take any of these, he would spoil Allahs covenant and disobey His Prophet. Verily, they are my allies and have my secure charter against all that they hate. No one is to force them to travel or to oblige them to fight. The Muslims are to fight for them. If a female Christian is married to a Muslim, it is not to take place without her approval. She is not to be prevented from visiting her church to pray. Their churches are declared to be protected. They are neither to be prevented from repairing them nor the sacredness of their covenants. No one of the nation (Muslims) is to disobey the covenant till the Last Day (end of the world). The above is summarized as the following points:All important aspects of human rights, including such topics as the protection of minorities living under Islamic rule, freedom of worship and movement, freedom to appoint their own judges and to own and maintain their property, exemption from military service, and the right to protection in war. Have Muslims Been Treated Likewise? It is sad to note that the mass slaughter of Muslims by the Crusaders in later centuries as well as mass murder and exile of Palestinians from their own lands by the Jews a few decades ago and the continuous injustice being imposed on them, mark the darkest years of the relationship between three monotheistic religions. One wonders how would the world ever return to peaceful co-existence while political ambitions and monetary gains rule instead of Allahs laws.

Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi

The importance of Muslims defending Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Mosque

ish Salahuddin Al-Ayoubi, who was able to regain al-Quds from Christians. Muslims everywhere are still, as they have always been, ready to do all what they can in defense of al-Quds. This is the case with all the nations I have visited, starting with the Philippines and Indonesia in the very East through Morocco in the Muslim West, though unfortunately this was not the temperament of Muslim rulers. Al-Quds is an invaluable part of the homeland of Islam. For more than 14 centuries, Muslims have lived there. They have not usurped it from the Jews who had already ceased to live there hundreds of years before that. The Jews longest reign in Palestine lasted for only several hundred years, while Arabs and others have been there for thousands of years. The Christian patriarch of al-Quds handed it to `Umar ibn Al Khattab. Among the patriarch's conditions was that no Jew should live there. The sovereignty over al-Quds, particularly East al-Quds, must be Islamic, Arab, and Palestinian. This will not prevent any Jew or Christian from observing his religious rituals with the perfect freedom and tolerance which Islam has been famous for throughout the eras. The international legitimacy embodied in the Security Council resolutions asserts that al-Quds is part of the Arab lands occupied since 1967. Hence, evidence based on history, religion and international law all jointly prove that al-Quds belongs to the Palestinians. The crisis of al-Quds should be the number one item on the agenda of the Islamic World.

No Muslim, be he in authority or not, is allowed to abandon any of the lands of Muslims. The land of the Islamic world is not the property of any president, prince, minister or group of people. It is not up to anyone therefore to relinquish it under any circumstances. Conversely, it is the duty of individuals and groups to strive hard to liberate occupied territories and retrieve usurped land. The entire nation is jointly responsible for that and it is not up to the ruler or his subjects to choose to give up the land. If a particular generation lapses in idleness or is incapable of shouldering the responsibility, it has no right to force its idleness or incapacity on all the coming generations up till Judgement Day, by giving up what it has no right to. Therefore, I have issued a Fatwa indicating that it is unlawful for all homeless Palestinian refugees to accept damages in return for their lost land, even if they amount to billions. The land of Islam is not for sale; it is not to be relinquished, and no damages can possibly make up for its loss. If this is the ruling concerning any ordinary piece of land in an Islamic state, what will be the case with the holy land of Jerusalem, the land of the first of the two qiblahs and Al-Aqsa Mosque and the third most venerable city in Islam, after Makkah and Madinah? This land was the destination of Al-Israa' and the land from where Al-Mi`raj was launched. Nothing better explains its revered status than Allah's words, (Glory to (Allah) Who did take His servant for a journey by night from the sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless, in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who Hears and Sees (all things) ) (Al-Israa' 17:1). Therefore, al-Quds (Jerusalem) has come to enjoy a special place in the heart of every Muslim in the entire Arab world. The occupation of al-Quds moves his heart and pains him, out of love, keenness and jealousy over it as well as his concern about it. It is mainly on account of al-Quds that the Palestinian cause comes first on Muslims' list of priorities. It is al-Quds that Muslims fear for and are keen to preserve, defend and fight for. It is for the sake of al-Quds that they willingly give their lives and all they hold dear. Al-Quds is the symbol of the cause of Palestine. It is the backbone and the very core of the problem. True are the words of the poet who once said, Palestine is meaningless with no Aqsa or al-Quds. Without al-Quds, it is like a body with no head. Al-Quds is not for the Palestinians only, but for all Muslims, be they Arabs or not. It is a city for all Arabs, be they Muslims or Christians. Therefore it is incumbent on Muslims, wherever they may be, to shoulder their responsibility of defending al-Quds and Al-Aqsa Mosque. This is an obligation for them all. They are to jointly defend it, offering in the process their lives, their money and all they possess, or else they will be subject to Allah's punishment, for Allah says: (O ye who believe what is the matter with you, that when ye are asked to go forth in the cause of Allah, ye cling heavily to the earth? Do ye prefer the life of this world to the Hereafter? But little is the comfort of this life, as compared with the Hereafter) (At-Tawbah 9:38). During my tours across the Arab world, many a time have I been asked by Muslim youth who would hide their heads in their hands and fervently crying, would ask, How do we clear our conscience and shoulder the responsibility of defending al-Quds? We have seen how the Arab world in its entirety was turned upside down when a Jewish fanatic attempted to burn Al-Aqsa Mosque in 1969. Muslims called on each other across the world. The first Islamic Summit was held, which in turn gave rise to the Islamic Conference Organization. When the crusaders formerly occupied al-Quds, it was liberated by non-Arab Muslims, like Turkish Emad Ed-Din Zinky and his son Nour Ed-Din Mahmoud shahid as well as his disciple, Kurd-

How The Prophet Treated Non-Muslims?

Continued from page 3

Treatment of the Enemies Prophet Muhammad was described by his Creator: We have sent you as a mercy for all the worlds(Al-Anbiya 21: 107) This quality was not limited to just the Muslim nation, but it also extended to non-Muslims, some of whom spent all their effort and recourses to harm the Prophet and his mission. The history of the advent of Islam and all the persecutions of the Prophet along with his followers in Makkah for 13 years and facing various wars after he migrated to Madinah the next 10 years, clearly indicate that although the Prophet did not hesitate to defend the mission, but he never took revenge on personal account. The greatest historical pardon unparalleled in history is his pardon of the entire population of Makkah when he finally marched into the city with his army and declared victory over his adversaries. When Prophet Muhammad conquered Makkah, without bloodshed in the twenty-first year of his Prophethood, he asked the Makkan unbelievers who were awaiting his decision about them:How do you expect me to treat you? They responded unanimously: "You are a noble one, the son of a noble one." He announced to them his decision:You may go free! No reproach this day shall be on you; may Allah forgive you. (Al-Bayhaqi) Also, the prisoners of war were treated fairly and all who confronted him in person and attacked him with the vilest language were met with calm and wise responses.Clearly, Prophet Muhammad truly represented one of the highest moral, ethical and tolerant character in a human being ever lived. He fought only those who fought him and made peace with those who did not oppress his followers. Allah affirms: Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes from dealing kindly and justly with them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly. Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion (forbids) that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers. (Al-Mumtahanah 60: 8-9)

Israel's Aqsa Provocations: Fuel to Fire

By Khalid Amayreh

Hard-line lawmakers vowed to "keep up the struggle going until the Temple Mount is liberated and placed fully under Israeli sovereignty." (Reuters) Muslim authorities in Israeli-occupied East al-Quds have warned of dire consequences following recent Israeli measures, aimed at imposing Israeli (Jewish) sovereignty at the Haram al-Sharif (Noble Sanctuary) the third holiest Muslim shrine which houses the two main Muslim sanctuaries, the Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. The Israeli Knesset or parliament last week briefly discussed a proposal to that effect. However, the discussion was suspended following a "secret warning" from Israel's chief domestic intelligence agency, the Shin Bet, that any tampering with the status-quo at the site, which Jews call "Temple Mount," would spark off a huge conflagration in the region. None the less, hard-line lawmakers, many from the coalition government headed by Binyamin Netanyahu, vowed to "keep up the struggle going until the Temple Mount is liberated and placed fully under Israeli sovereignty." The Israeli army occupied East al-Quds from Jordan in 1967 and ever since the area has been administered by the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf (Endowments) and Islamic Affairs. Last year, Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and the King of Jordan Abdullah II reached an agreement affirming Jordanian jurisdiction over Islamic holy places in al-Quds. The two leaders also agreed that Jordanian administration of the Haram al-Sharif would continue "as a trust" until the disappearance of the Israeli occupation. Israel, however, made it clear by words and actions that that it would not respect the agreement. Indeed, Israeli authorities escalated its provocations against Muslim worshipers and permitted Jewish fanatics to tour the area and hold Talmudic rituals in defiance of Muslim sensibilities. Last week, Moshe Feiglin, a member of Netanyahu's Likud party, toured the Aqsa courts with heavy army and police escort. He reportedly shouted obscenities at Muslims, telling them "Go to the desert, go to Saudi Arabia." Israeli government officials refused to condemn the provocation. Far from it, Israeli officials defended "the right of Jews to pray at the holiest spot on earth." Ultimate Red-line Sheikh Muhammed Hussein, the highest-ranking Muslim official in al-Quds, was asked what he thought of the latest Israeli provocations. "Of course, I cannot say I don't take these threats extremely seriously. It seems these people are hell bent on causing a huge bloodbath in the region. Unfortunately, this is exactly what would happen if the Israeli government didn't rein in these fanatics." The soft-spoken Sheikh was further asked to respond to those arguing that allowing Jews to merely hold prayers at the Haram al-Sharif would not be the end of the world and could actually defuse a huge crisis with possible catastrophic consequences. The Sheikh said: "Listen, this site has been an exclusively Islamic holy place for more than 1400 years. Yes, we are for peace and tranquility, yes we hate violence and bloodshed, and yes we respect the rights of others to practice their religions as they please. But this is an Islamic place. It belongs to Muslims. It has always belonged to Muslims. We can't accept Israeli efforts to steal or arrogate our rights. This is not a political matter; this is a matter of religious belief and faith. Hence, our determination is to repulse Jewish plots and provocations." Virtually, all other Muslim officials spoke along the same lines, totally rejecting any Israeli encroachment at the Muslim sanctuary. Not Accidental Timing Sheikh IkremaSabri, another high-ranking Muslim cleric in

al-Quds and regular imam at Friday congregational prayer, was asked why he thought the Israeli authorities chose this time to up the aggression in al-Quds. He said the Israeli were always seeking "the opportune time" to create trouble and trigger violence. "They might think that the ongoing turbulence and instability in much of the Arab world constitute an opportune time to gang up on the Aqsa Mosque. "But they are mistaken. The Aqsa Mosque is an integral part of each and every Muslim's belief, and any aggression on it would draw unprecedented reactions at all levels." Sabri said, however, Muslims ought to ready themselves to face all eventualities. "We know the confrontation with Jews and Zionism will not end tomorrow. This is going to be a long confrontation and I have no doubt that Muslims will triumph at the end." In fact opposition to Israeli efforts to gain a foothold at the Islamic holy place is by no means confined to religious leaders. WaselYousef is an outspoken member of the Executive Committee of the PLO. He said that imposing the Israel sovereignty at the Haram al-Sharif would be "the ultimate breaker of everything." "Nothing would survive this, neither the peace process nor peace treaties, nothing. And the regimes won't be able to rein in the masses." Weak Reactions None the less, Arab reactions to Israeli provocations in al-Quds have been generally weak and minimal. On Feb. 25, 2014, 47 Jordanian lawmakers voted in favor of a motion, which is not legally binding, demanding to annul the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel of 1994. The lawmakers also called on the Jordanian government to expel the Israeli ambassador from Amman. However, it is unlikely that King Abdullah, who runs the county's foreign policy, will heed his parliament's advice. Jordan, a chronically poor country, lives on foreign aid, particularly from western countries, most of which are allies of Israel. The Army-backed Egyptian government also issued a verbal condemnation of "provocative Israeli behavior" and warned of negative consequences and ramifications on the peace process. Observers, however, interpret Arab condemnations of Israel, especially in these days, as largely disingenuous and mainly intended for "domestic consumption." Some of these regimes, like in Syria and Egypt, face serious legitimacy problems and might be prompted to think that adopting an anti-Israeli discourse, especially in public, could serve their immediate goals. Peace-process Reaches Dead-end Israeli efforts to change the status quo at the Haram al-Sharif of al-Quds coincide with reports of the near collapse of US-mediated negotiations between Israel and the PA. US Secretary John Kerry has urged the Palestinian leadership to agree to extend the duration of the talks several more months. The PA refused the American request. However, it is widely believed that President Obama will try to convince Abbas, whom he will meet in Washington in mid-March, to "give peace another chance." Palestinian officials have been saying that Kerry's mediation efforts are going nowhere as Israel keeps expanding Jewish colonies at the Palestinians' expense to the extent that it is no longer possible to establish a viable and territorially contiguous Palestinian state in the West Bank. Last week, former PA security Chief TawfiqTirawi was quoted by the Maan News agency, a mouthpiece of the PLO, as saying that he did not see any realistic chance for the appearance of a real Palestinian state in the next 20 years.

MEC lauds Muslim schools' KCSE performance

Muslim Education Council(MEC)wish to send message of congratulations to all Muslim owned and sponsored schools for posting sterling performance in the 2013,Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE)examinations results released on Monday March 3,2014 by Education cabinet secretary Jacob Kaimenyi. On behalf of MEC single out WAMY High school of Nairobi, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Mombasa, Istiqama Academy also of Mombasa, Alim High school of Machakos, Kenya Muslim Academy among others for the good performance and results. We are proud of you and pray to Allah to guide you and give you strength, knowledge and wisdom even to perform much better in future examinations. While it is the desire to see our youngsters perform well and join the best institutions for them to excel in future our obligations as stake holders should provide the needed support and cooperation. The key factors that have contributed to the success of these Muslim schools are good leadership by the administration, teachers -parents cooperation, teachers dedication and commitment and lastly hard work and discipline by students. However, there is need for all Muslim stakeholders in the educational sector to embrace a change of attitude towards education. The Muslim ummah will not prosper without a zealous pursuit of education in its proper and all- inclusive manner. Our educational backwardness will not change until we take stalk of when did the rain started beating us. Change of attitude is engrained in the Quranic maxim that God does not change the state of a people until they change what is before them. As much as we congratulate you, there is much more to be done for improvement. This was not the best performance yet, but we believe you can perform much better and compete with the other academic giants in the country. We are calling on Muslim schools to work extra hard this year so that we improve on the performance. Among the strength of Muslims in Kenya is the existence of Muslim organizations, hence there is need for them to work together, net work and streamline educational programmes in all counties. We seize the opportunity to express our sincere gratitude to Jamia Mosque Committee for sponsoring Muslim students in secondary and higher learning institutions through the provision of bursaries and we call on other Muslim organization to emulate the same for the improvement of education standards in the Muslim community. Embracing practices that are yielding results is fundamental in bringing changes in the education sector in the Muslim community. Educational exchange and professional visits by teachers should be encouraged. Allah says : Help each other in righteousness and piety and do not help one another in evil and vain pursuits. Let us aspire to inspire in order to be role model of excellenceAnd say: God increase us in knowledge. Munawar Khan Executive Director, Muslim Education Council(MEC)

Concern raised over harassment of Muslim reverts

Concerns have been raised over the constant harassment of Muslim reverts by the police. This is after five reverts from Moyale were arrested in front of Al Amin Mosque in Nairobi. The reverts were later released after being held for two days at the Pangani police station. They were arrested on Monday by plain clothes police on suspicion of being members of the Al Shabaab terror group. Musa Moche a teacher at the centre was also arrested after he went to make inquiries about the students. He was allegedly accused of being a terror suspect and Al Shabaab trainer. According to Ali Hajj Chief Executive Officer of Darul Irshad revert centre in Nguluni, the police purported to be conducting investigations on the students who were all under the age of eighteen and just completed secondary school. Immediately they arrived the police got hold of them. The police told us that they were conducting investigation and the case was with the Anti terror police unit pending interrogation. The reverts were released without being taken to court to be charged. He said. Revert students come here for vetting process before being allowed to proceed with their studies. Immediately they arrived the police got hold of them as if they were informed of the arrival said Ali. He noted that police have a habit of targeting the vetting day to arrest reverts that turn up for the process. Earlier a group of reverts from Rongai were arrested by police on their way to Nairobi for vetting. Some of them suffered injuries from beatings and had their forms destroyed .They were later released too. He decried that cases of harassment of reverts by the police have been on the rise for quite some time adding that the fundamental rights and freedom of worship as enshrined in the constitution must be respected for harmony and coexistence to prevail.

Garissa County Government to offer scholarships

The Garissa County government is working on a bill for the establishment of education scholarship scheme programmes to local students who qualify to join institutions of higher learning. According to Governor Nadhif Jama a legal structure is being drawn up to fast -track the programme. He said the programme will help needy students access funds for higher education. This will help bright and dedicated youngsters in Garissa County to further their education with ease said Jama. Speaking at the opening of the Kenyatta University campus in Dadaab sub-county , Nathif noted that universities are not only established to provide degrees and make money from students but also play a role in creating avenues for development. The Governor further said it is a win -win situation as the university campus enjoys the full support of the people of Garissa County and the entire Northern Kenya region. Nadhif asked the residents to enroll their children in the institution after completing secondary schools. Kenyatta University vice-chancellor prof Olive Mugenda said priority will be given to local students who qualify for university intake. Locals will be the first to be considered even when employment and business contracts become available at the institution she said. Among those present were Dadaab Member of Parliament Mohammed Dahiye and county womens representative Shukran Gure.

Disaster preparedness
Recently we just got the climate analysis from the metrological department that the weather pattern will change from mid march onwards. The analysts went ahead and warned of possible floods and dire consequences of evacuations and relocation of many people across the country. Over the years, the most affected parts are Muslim dominated regions like Coast, North Eastern, and upper part of Eastern. During the dry spell it has not been easy for us either. Many families have lost their livestock which forms the basic source of their livelihood. During both times of floods and drought many families are left with famine and loss of property. We need to step up some disaster preparedness mechanisms so that we dont start running around when the damage is already done. If it is the issue of rains and floods we need to bring awareness to the people and our local leadership at the County level to find modes of harvesting the water in dams for future use when the rains recede. This same water can be utilised during the dry spell when everything goes dry. For the past years Ummah Foundation in collaboration with other Muslim funding Organisations both in Kenya and abroad have struggled with these challenges of food relief and water supply programs in the Northern Region but the situation still remains the same year after year. The propensity of our Kenyan government and its development partners to emphasise relief instead of pursuing real development raises a few questions. Who benefits from the status quo? Are drought affected communities mere pawns in a major conspiracy masterminded by the global aid industry? These are burning issues that deserve a discussion of their own. Nevertheless, there is something quite disturbing in the apathy shown by the Kenyan leadership when it comes to tackling floods, drought and famine. As a means of getting our Muslim community out of this vicious circle we need to think outside the box, emphasize and encourage our communities to invest heavily in Education. That is the only weapon we can use to compete favourably with the rest of the Kenyan Populace. Education is the key that can be used to change the old trend and set new formulae where Muslims participation in the policy making and leadership can be recognised. That is why Ummah Foundation has given a lot of weight on Education Bursaries and Scholarships. To be successful we need to work together to fight poverty, hunger and ignorance. Can you help sponsor a Muslim child who is at the verge of dropping out of school due to lack of fees? Can you help Ummah Foundation achieve this noble goal? Give your sadaqa and Zakat to Ummah Foundation and your donation will make a big change in this Ummah of Muhammad (p.b.u.h). For your contributions send your donations to or write a cheque in the name of Ummah Foundation.
