MAUD 0101 Urban Design Studio Brief Studio Introduction This studio aims to develop skills in urban design. It involves conceptualization and visualization through consideration of contemporary urban design issues, and includes documentation and analysis of urban form and process, understanding site context, and urban design, with an emphasis on the public realm. Issues of urban morphology, local and regional identity, and sustainability inform the approach of the studio. We will consider environmental factors, social factors, urban structure, local and regional identity, and urban quality, and discuss the characteristics of good urban form within the context of various precincts in Bhopal. The exercises and major studio will enable students to explore various aspects of urban form and process and to gain experience in addressing contemporary issues through an urban design approach and methodology. The final output will involve students in framing and understand urban design frameworks for their precincts and understand the phasing aspects of the same culminating in sensitive interventions in the precincts. Studio Objectives To gain experience in documenting, analyzing and understanding urban form and its evolution To develop knowledge of key concepts and principles of urban design and their application through the exploration of an approach and methodology for urban design To develop the ability to address issues and opportunities at the urban scale in three dimensional form through a process of design development To gain experience in graphic thinking and communication as it relates to urban design

Teaching Approach This course follows a studio format, supplemented with site visits, lectures, and reviews of work. Each class period is to be considered a working session, with teaching and learning taking place through discussions of the work in progress. Students are expected to attend each session, and to present and discuss their ideas as they evolve. Development of exercises and projects will require additional time in addition to the assigned class period. Through the studio sessions, and with a series of interrelated exercises as instruments, students will gain experience in documenting, analyzing and understanding urban form and process, and in formulating physical frameworks and design concepts and strategies. Areas of Study : Lower Lake Precinct, Bhopal Idgah Hills Precinct , Bhopal Old Civil Court Precinct Bhopal Jain Mandir Lal Ghati Chowk Precinct, Bhopal

MAUD 0101 Urban Design Studio Brief Stage I : Documentation and Analysis : Preparation of the Base Map. Slope Analysis, Landscape study and Environmental aspects with respect to Urban Development. Identifying buildable zones/areas and specific areas and considerations for development. Defining the study area Reference to existing planning documents and building regulations , ownership patterns of the area.

Mapping ( To be done and explored under the following factors) Setting of the area : Main or special features of the site, Geographic features, Features of historic significance, elements of local distinctiveness Building use Building heights Landscape features and elements Nature of open spaces and open space network Movement patterns Legibility Landmarks, structures of historical importance Land use Ownership pattern Facilities map Classification of built form Environmental Factors Public activity mapping

Themes /factors for observation documentation 1. Traffic Studies : Qualitative Traffic/pedestrian/transit/parking Main vehicular routes through the precinct/area or connecting to the street Traffic congestion areas Movement pattern of the pedestrian Barriers to pedestrian traffic Parking issues Legibilty, orientation and signage

2.Urban form/architecture/open space Chronological Development of the area Activity nodes Gateways Open spaces Views Vacant lots or buildings/biuldings fo historic nature

MAUD 0101 Urban Design Studio Brief Symbols of the area Types of uses , architectural styles Land use Community facilities Urban setting and History Determinants and urban form

3. Economic and social activity Clusters of type of activities and their interfaces Clusters of social activity(hang out, gathering areas) Commercial uses and buildings Social uses/religious uses Nodes Interaction between the social and the physical (people and built form) Patterns of circulation Ownership patterns Classification of interfaces Density and activity relationship

4.Public space planning Streetscape furniture Necessary activities Character of the street Spaces to work and play Intersections Updating the base up with respect to public space usage Landscape features and environmental aspects.

5. Visual analysis Townscape analysis Imageability Sense of enclosure Lines of visibility, View Corridors, Panoroma, Vantage Points, Skyline Stage II : Analysis: The analysis will be contextual aiming to identify the existing potentials and limitations of the study area from a morphological, social and economic point of view. You are asked for a critical view your own image- of the site and its context based on an analysis covering different scales and a variety of issues. This will directly contribute to develop the framework for the study area and design for the site allowing you to make informed decisions. This involves understanding themes such as movement patterns, arrival and destination points, connectivity, different grains, compatibility of usages and transitions between them, understanding the topography, urban landscape, distances between main facilities, social and economic statistics studies, historical values of the area (heritage), different regulations, local plans and so on. You are encouraged to carry out a tissue and grain analysis of the area.

Page 4

MAUD 0101 Urban Design Studio Brief The analysis may be presented using a mixture of visual media of your choice supported with key words. You may like to use some of the following: Mapping, diagramming, graphs, treated images, treated aerial views, plans and sections, collages and/or sketches. After doing comprehensive documentation and analysis, SWOT analysis would be carried out with respect to the Opportunities and constraints on site and formulation of the VISION for the area. Relevant Case studies of similar precincts need to be looked into. Stage III : Framework: The framework is the skeleton within which a part of a city or even a city develops. Frameworks can be set up at different scales and in this case you are asked to establish a framework for the study area that will directly inform your design of the site. The framework for the study area will be based on a series of strategies that together will form the framework within which the different elements and aspects will evolve as such as movement patterns, connectivity, uses, densities, balance between void and mass, social mixed, activities, intensities, urban form and so on. Aims: Strengthen the urban form and specially the movement pattern within the study area and its surroundings. Establish levels of permeability related to the different urban conditions.

Outcomes: In this case you are going to focus your strategy on the following topics: Land uses as a catalyst and complementary to the existing ones. Open spaces: At different scales and types. Connections Social mix Visual analysis and imageability to unite a urban areas.

For the above you will produce diagrams and ideograms supported by drawings, sketches, key words and brief descriptions. Attitude, Overall and Framework Plan Our next task is to explore different approaches to the future of the precinct. In this exercise your team will solidify its attitude about what the area should become and prepare a program and guidelines which illustrates this direction. There are three parts to the assignment Design Concept/Attitude/Program In the first part of this assignment, you should quickly discuss and debate different approaches to the future of the area and agree on a preferred direction for your team. You should consider the area (as outlined), the remainder of the site and its surrounding site. A one page written summary of the principles you feel should guide development in this area. A preliminary program of activities A diagram of your planning concept for the area showing paths, land uses, and texture of buildings and spaces.

Page 5

MAUD 0101 Urban Design Studio Brief Overall Land Use / A Plan for the Total Site In this part, you should look at the entire site and surrounding areas and determined land use for the total area. The overall plan should illustrate all of your goals above. A one page written description of your approach. How does it illustrate your principles? A Framework plan showing uses, transit, public spaces, circulation Urban Design Guidleines and Phasing to the approach. Formulation for urban design guidelines to achieve the framework.

Stage IV : Urban Intervention In this section we will discuss the criteria for intervening in the urban fabric. We will first discuss some of the fundamental issues indentifies through analysis and documentation. We will then in accordance with the vision of the area and the framework proposed, examine normative theories and performance criteria to explore what makes a good urban environment. We would also review and critique the interventions. It is important to examine the reasons for interventions in urban environments. Issues :

Need for intervention Identifying interventions area / Pockets Urban Design toolsSpecifies for the intervention Strategies for Intervention Measuring post intervention impacts

Attendance and grading: Students must attend to a minimum of 75% of the class time Attendance : 5% Distribution of the grades: Internal examination -25% (Evaluated as a cumulative of all reviews) Term Assesments- 30% (Minors : major reviews at various stages) End term exam- 40% (Final External Jury) Positive process (contribution to the class, progress, attendance, ability to take criticism to develop the case study and design) will affect your grade positively. Lack of process on the other hand, will have a negative effect on the grade. General rules of the class: Do not be late for class. After 10 minutes, you will be marked as absent. Cell phones and any other device with a ringer or alarm must be switched off during class or put on silent. Do not to miss the presentations and interactive sessions and the working studios . Otherwise, it would get difficult to grasp the subsequent studio sessions and will be difficult to complete and comprehend to studio exercise because they would be analytical.
