Before this course I had never officially heard the term digital citizenship.

I have almost completed a masters in Instructional Technology and am surprised this term never came up. After doing a little research I did realize that I am familiar with most of the concepts of digital citizenship especially digital etiquette and communication. I now know that there are 9 themes of digital citizenship and I can see how each one is important especially in a school setting. The main digital citizenship concept that I have seen in our school district is the use of an internet Acceptable Use Policy. Coffee counties policy mainly states when how students can use technology in the school system. Below is a link to the Coffee County 2012-2015 technology plan including the acceptable use policy starting on page 22 of the document. http://www.coffee.k12.ga.us/Download.asp?L=1&LMID=443123&PN=DocumentUploads&DivisionID=10562&DepartmentID =&SubDepartmentID=&SubP=&Act=Download&T=1&I=179022 A digital citizenship program would be a great positive contribution to our school community and would be a great asset for teachers to have and be able to reference for student use of technology. In schools today digital bullying is a large problem both inside the school setting and outside, as well as being able to communicate with students and parents on a daily basis. If teachers and students are informed of what digital citizenship is and how technology can be used properly and effectively I think it would enable even more positive outcomes from the use of technology. In order to begin this initiative in Coffee County it would first have to be brought up at a leadership meeting and voted on then it could be presented to the professional learning director for implementation in the individual schools or district as a whole.
