Lenten Reflections Nailed to the cross, over and over again. Wasn't once enough?

Lent invites us to reflect in a special way on a persons love that was so totally complete and unconditional that it eventually led to his demise. Lent is also a time when we as Christians are called to examine our commitment to Gods invitation to follow Jesus. We are invited to journey with Jesus and some of his companions during the more painful times of his life while we ask ourselves, Do I contribute to the continuous nailing of Jesus to the cross, over and over again, by my actions or omissions in life?

Spirituality of the Readings

2nd Sunday of Lent A Reading I: Genesis 12:1-4a Responsorial Psalm 33:4-5, 18-19, 20, 22 Reading II: 2 Timothy 1:8b-10 Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9

notice that I said, in the complete union with the God that he is, not a union that he has. In Jesus, divinity and humanity are completely at one with each other. Daily onlookers saw only the human, but in this passage, Jesus is showing the apostles his whole self, divinity in its complete oneness with its humanity. Why such a sudden revelation to them? Perhaps this scene is just one stage of the instruction he had been giving to the apostles throughout the whole Gospel. Just before our passage he had finally taught them what a real Messiah is. He said that the Son of the living God (or in other words, the Messiah) must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised (Mt 16:13-23). A shocking revelation for the apostles, and for us too. Maybe the apostles were at last ready for it, after so many months, and maybe we are too. But notice Peter objecting vehemently, taking Jesus aside and rebuking him. God forbid, lord! no such thing shall ever happen to you. Maybe that is your reaction too and mine as well! Jesus responds. He goes so far as to call Peter Satan for resisting the new revelation. Suffering and death are not foreign to Jesus, the Messiah. They are of the essence. Such a hard lesson this is for each of us. Suffering, death and resurrection are at the heart of love! I suppose the Transfiguration was the way for Jesus to reassure them and us that such awful sounding things actually fulfill his divinity. They are Gods love shining forth. How many of us have time to even think of such a miracle, such a transfiguration? Go and pray.

Brilliant Suffering
last week we saw Jesus being tempted, like the rest of us. It was so human. now, this week, we see him transformed into dazzling white light! not so human. What is going on? I want to describe an Ignatian prayer experience that could shed some light on this Transfiguration. Imagine yourself sad and discouraged, wishing God would help you. you want your faith back, which used to be strong. But you do not find it. you go along in your normal patterns. now, suppose that all at once you find yourself moved and attracted to God in a way you cannot doubt, a way that is beyond you but also within you. After the experience, you cannot really doubt that it was from God, even though you do not really understand it.* This would be an important moment, wouldnt it a transformation (though brief) of your experience of God, a reshaping of it. Call it a transfiguration. In such a prayer, unusual as it is, God gives us a brief vision of how things really are at their core, impossible to describe here. But maybe the experience is to keep us from getting discouraged, or letting our attention drift away while he is teaching us. now apply such an experience to the scene of Jesus Transfiguration in Sundays Gospel. The apostles suddenly behold Jesus with his divinity shining forth. It breaks through their usual filters. Their experience of Jesus is being transfigured. For a moment they see Jesus in the complete union with the God that he is.

About Holy Week

Holy Week is the week prior to Easter, beginning with the final Sunday of lent known as Palm or Passion Sunday, occurring this year on April 13, and running through Holy Saturday on April 19. It includes Holy Thursday and Good Friday. It was celebrated in Jerusalem from at least the close of the fourth century according to the accounts in the Pilgrimage of Etheria. The entire week celebrates the final days of Jesus life, and then culminates in the greatest festival of the Christian year: Easter, the feast of Jesus resurrection. The final three days of Holy week are part of the Paschal TriduumHoly Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. Paschal means passover, and Triduum means a space of 3 days. Six days before the solemn passover, the lord came to Jerusalem.... Palm Sunday* is the day we remember Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem from the Mount of olives where he is greeted by crowds waving palms and spreading their cloaks before him. He comes riding on the colt of an ass (donkey) symbolizing a person of peace. The Passion from the Gospel of Matthew is read on this Sunday. Monday of Holy Week is not a major feast. The cleansing of the temple in the Holy City of Jerusalem is thought to have taken place on this Monday. It was this event that finally sealed Jesus fate as it raised the ire of the Temple authorities. The Gospel for this year relates the costly anointing of Jesus at Bethany by Mary the sister of lazarus, the one who Jesus had raised from the dead. Judas, the one who would betray him, complains about the expense. The passage ends with an ominous note: ...the chief priests plotted to kill lazarus too, because many of the Jews were turning away and believing in him (Jesus). Tuesday of Holy Week is the day when the famous incident between Jesus and Pharisees is thought to have taken place. This was when the chief priests, scribes and elders tried to trap Jesus into making a blasphemous, or, anti-god remark. In the Gospel passage from John, situated at supper before the feast of Passover, Jesus speaks of the pending

betrayal by Judas Iscariot, the disciple who takes the morsel intimately dipped by Jesus himself. Immediately, Judas left and it was night. on Tuesday morning, there is a Chrism Mass at the Cathedral where holy oils are consecrated for the year for use in Baptism, Confirmation and Anointing the Sick. Wednesday of Holy Week is also called Spy Wednesday, for it is the day on which Judas Iscariot went to the chief priests and agreed to hand Jesus over for payment of thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas looked for an opportunity to hand Jesus over. Holy Thursday*, also called Maundy Thursday as Johns Gospel recalls the washing of the disciples feet by Jesus. This day is associated with the last Supper (lords Supper) on the Feast of the unleavened Bread (Passover) which Jesus celebrated with his disciples and where he instituted the Eucharist. During supper, Jesus identified Judas as his betrayer. Afterwards, at night, Jesus retired to the Garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of olives. It was in Gethsemane that Jesus was taken captive, betrayed by Judas kiss. We celebrate The lords Supper at an evening Mass which includes a symbolic washing of the feet of 12 people. Good Friday* commemorates Jesus Crucifixion and death on the Mount of Calvary outside the walls of Jerusalem. It is a solemn day in the Catholic Church on which no Masses are celebrated. There are readings of the Passion according to Johns Gospel in the context of a Communion Service. Afterwards, a plain wooden cross is venerated. other services on Good Friday are the Stations of the Cross, a devotional remembering or reenactment of the condemnation, carrying of the cross, crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus. Holy Saturday* we recall Jesus time in the tomb, and the despair of the followers of Jesus. on this day the Tabernacle remains empty. It is on Saturday night that we begin the Great Vigil of Easter*.
*Additional Commentary will appear in subsequent Bulletins.
