Procedure: New Sketcher Workflow

Scenario
Change the sketch orientation from within Sketcher.

Task 1.
1. Start the Sketch Tool

Enter Sketcher, then edit the sketch setup and select a reference.

Select datum plane right from the model tree. Notice the selected sketch and reference planes. Notice the default sketch orientation.

2. Click Sketch.

3. Click Sketch Setup

from the Sketcher toolbar.

Right-click and select Placement. Press CTRL + D to view the standard orientation. Change the sketching plane by selecting datum plane FRONT from the model tree. Click Sketch. The orientation is still horizontal.

Sketch Setup was added to the Sketcher toolbar for training purposes. You can also access the Sketch Setup dialog box by clicking Sketch > Sketch Setup from the main menu.

4. Click Sketch Setup

from the Sketcher toolbar.

Right-click and select View Orientation. In the Sketch dialog box, select Top as the Orientation. Notice that the sketch view reorients vertically. Click Sketch.

This completes the procedure.

Scenario
Enable the option to undo/redo with view manipulations. undo-redo.prt

Zoom in and create fillets, and then undo/redo to view the results.

Copy, paste, and rotate a sketch.

Task 1.

Copy and rotate the hexagon.

1. Click and drag a window to encompass the sketch and the dimension. Press CTRL + C. Press CTRL + V.

2. Select a location to place the copied entities. Then type 30 for the Rotate value in the Scale Rotate dialog box, as shown in the figure.

3. Click and drag the center of the placed sketch to snap to the center of the first hexagon. Click Accept Changes from the Scale Rotate dialog box.

This completes the procedure.

Scenario
Create a cut using a sketch from the Sketcher palette.

1. Start the Sketch Tool

Start a sketch and use the custom Sketcher palette.


from the feature toolbar.

2. Select the surface shown in the figure.

3. Click Sketch from the Sketch dialog box. Notice that the References dialog box is not displayed by default. Click References from the Sketcher toolbar. Notice that you can configure references. Click Close from the References dialog box.
If the system can find suitable dimensioning references, the References dialog box is not displayed. This behavior can be controlled using the sketcher_auto_create_refs option in the config.pro file.

4. Click Palette

from the Sketcher toolbar.

Select the Custom tab. Select the 12point sketch to preview it.

Task 2. Place the 12-point sketch from the palette.


1. Double-click the 12-point sketch thumbnail. Select a location over the model. Type 7 as the Scale value. Drag the sketch to snap to the intersection of the Sketcher references. Refer to the figure. Click Accept Changes .

Click Close in the Sketcher palette. 2. Click Done .

Task 3.

Create a cut using the sketch.

1. Press CTRL + D to view the standard orientation.

2. With the sketch still selected, start the Extrude Tool

3. Right-click and select Flip Depth Direction. Right-click again and select Remove Material.

Right-click the depth handle and select To Next. Click Complete Feature from the dashboard.

This completes the procedure.

1. Procedure: Sketched Text Enhancements

Scenario
Justify sketched text on a ratchet handle.

Task 1.
1. Start the Sketch Tool

Sketch text on the flat surface of the wrench.

2. Notice the default reference plane. Select Top as the Orientation. Click Sketch. .

5. Type TIGHTEN as the text line. Notice that the text is left justified by default.

Task 2. Center justify the text and make it follow the curve of the opening.
1. Select Center from the Horizontal drop-down list. Select Place along curve. Select the edge shown. Notice that the text sits inside the opening. Select Top from the Vertical drop-down list. Click OK from the Text dialog box.

2. Right-click and select Dimension. Create a dimension between the arc center and the text origin. Select the Point On Entity constraint and click Delete. Edit the dimension values, as shown in the figure. 3. Click Done .

This completes the procedure.

Scenario
Reference an intent chain with the offset edge function in Sketcher. intent_referencing.prt

Experiment with referencing an intent chain.

1. Start the Sketch Tool

Select the surface shown.

2. Click Sketch. Orient the model as shown.

3. Click Offset Edge

Query and select the intent edge as shown.

4. Type -5 as the offset and press ENTER. Click Done Section . . 5. With the sketch still selected, start the Extrude Tool Right-click and select Flip Depth Direction. Right-click again and select Remove Material. Drag the depth handle to 12. Click Complete Feature .

6. Expand Extrude 2 in the model tree. Select sketch S2D0006. Right-click and select Edit Definition. Right-click and select Delete. Sketch a circle as shown.

7. Click and drag a rectangle to select all the sketched geometry.

8. Click Done Section

9. Notice that the Extrude 3 cut feature has updated accordingly due to the intent edge, even though the edges to be offset were deleted and re-created.

Scenario
Use the Replace option within the References dialog box in Sketcher. replace_refs.prt

Task 1.

Resume a feature and replace a reference in Sketcher using the new option.

1. Click Settings > Tree Filters. Select the Suppressed Objects option if necessary. Click OK.

2. Press CTRL and select OVAL_SKETCH and OVAL_CUT from the model tree. Right-click and select Resume.

Notice that the sketched curve feature has missing references. Click Quick Fix > Redefine > Confirm.

3. Notice the missing references.

4. Select the first MISSING REFERENCE and click Replace. Select datum plane RIGHT from the model. Select datum plane RIGHT from the model. Since the reference is now the same, it is removed from the list. Notice that the Reference status is currently "Unsolved sketch". 5. Select the next MISSING REFERENCE and click Replace.

6. Click Solve. Notice that the Reference status is now "Fully Placed". Select the Edge:F12(ROUND_2) reference and click Replace. Select datum plane FRONT from the model. Click Solve and then click Close. 7. Notice that the remaining reference is not missing, but is to an edge of a round.

8. Edit the dimensions as shown.

9. Click Done Section

Click Yes to exit Resolve mode.

This completes the procedure.

1. Procedure: Sketcher Diagnostic Tools

Scenario
Experiment with the diagnostic tools in Sketcher.

1. Start the Extrude Tool

Right-click and select Define Internal Sketch. Select the front model surface. Click Sketch. Click No hidden . Sketcher display: .

2. Click Palette

Double-click the diagnostic sketch. Place the sketch anywhere on the model. Click Close from the Sketcher palette. Edit the Scale to 1.0 and press ENTER. Drag the sketch to snap to the centerlines. Click Accept Changes .

3. Click Done Section

Notice the two warnings in the message window. Click No. .

4. Click Feature Requirements

Notice the various warnings. Click Close. to enable it.

5. Click Shade Closed Loops

Notice that the sketch is not shaded.

Zoom in on the green highlighted lines. and trim the lines. .

Click Refit

8. Click Highlight Open Ends 9. Click Trim Corner

Zoom in on the two red dots. and trim the lines. . to disable it.

Click Refit

10. Notice that the closed sketch is now shaded. Click Shade Closed Loops . to disable it.

11. Click Feature Requirements

Notice that the sketch has no warnings. Click Close. Click Done Section .

12. Click Shading

13. Right-click and select Remove Material. Right-click the depth handle and select To Selected. Select the rectangular surface of Extrude 2. .

14. Click Complete Feature

This completes the procedure.
