TB awareness by staff of SJKS in a village in Ambala on TB Day

Dear Friends, It gives me immense pleasure in presenting our Annual report for 2014. The year was full of activities and our theme for the year was Health surveys and Vocational trainings for Sustainable Livelihoods. We continued to lay emphasis on transformation of Self Help Groups into Micro Enterprises.. SHRISTI JAN KALYAN SAMITTI is a social welfare, voluntary, non-profit, non-political, non-religious, non-government registered organization. SJKS was set up on 15th September, 2006 under Societies act to organize social development projects and to work to promote human rights - duties environment sanitation, health hygiene and social reforms through education training and awareness campaign. Thus, setting up a modern human social order bases on good will, peace, harmony, brotherhood and mutual co-operation. We are committed to the Socio-Economic development of the most disadvantaged-deprived-backward and neglected groups of the society. We aim to help the people to help themselves, as they know better their talents, problems and resources than outsiders to come out from apathy for their own development and for the benefit of the community at large. Community participation is ensured in all our development. This year we continued with our aim to mobilize and empower women economically so that their living standards are improved and they have a respectable place in the society. This year our main focus was on research surveys of people in rural and urban areas with special emphasis on young women. We aimed to give them self confidence by giving them vocational trainings like Retail management, Beauty culture and stitching so that they enhance their familys income. Our efforts were to increase Income generation ACTIVITY and finally transforming them as successful entrepreneurs and viable microenterprises.

Awareness programs in villages.

Shristi Jan Kalyan samitti volunteers in a meeting OBJECTIVES Shristi Jan Kalian Samittis main goals are to organize prepare and train poor and rural women for sustainable livelihoods and self employment. The poor and women obtain work security, income security, food security and social security (at least health care, child care and shelter). Shristi Jan Kalian Samitti organizes women to ensure that every family obtains sustainable livelihoods, upgrade living standards and achieve full employment. We aim to make women self-reliance, autonomous confident, individually and collectively, economically and in terms of their employment, family and decision-making ability. Objectives for 2014 is to enter social media for creating awareness and set up community radio and make social short film documentaries. SERVICES Supportive services like savings and credit, health care, child care, insurance, legal aid, capacity building and communication services are important needs of poor women. If women are to achieve their goals of full employment and self-reliance, these services are essential. We provide these services in a decentralized and affordable manner, at the doorsteps of poor and women. Further, supportive services can be and are themselves a source of self-employment. For example, midwives charge for their services and crche workers collect fees for taking care of young children. Also, women are ready to pay for the services and in fact, this results in the financial viability of the supportive services. They do not have to be totally dependent on subsidies and grants. Some supportive services like savings and credit, health and child care have formed their own co-operatives.

Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti is committed to doing its part in contributing to achieve some of the
Millennium Development Goals. Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger: Formation and strengthening of Self Help Affinity Groups (SHGs/SAGs): Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti strives to collaborate with other institutions like NABARD, the State and Central Governments in India, and Banks, etc., for formation, activation and nurturing the SHG concept that has been transformed into a national and regional movement. As a result of policy influencing, lending regulations have been modified to include priority sector loans directly to SHGs and without asking for beneficiary lists or pre-formulated loan utilization plans. Promotion of non-farm skills and enterprise development is an area that Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti believes holds an answer to the threatened livelihoods of the rural poor in the current context of liberalization and globalization. The youth see a greater future in the manufacturing and services sectors when compared to agriculture. Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti plans to train a number of young men and women as masons, electricians, plumbers, fitters, drivers, in the garment industry, as veterinary promoters, food product retailers, etc. The Samitti plans to set up a Technical Training Institute where boys and girls (including high school drop outs) can learn trades for employment in the industrial sector. Nevertheless, entrepreneurship development and training for employment in the non-farm sector remains an area in which Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti has to expand its investments and efforts. Micro-finance activities: Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti has always been clear that it should not compromise its development role with the role of a financier. On the other hand, besides continued and as yet unmet needs for credit by the poor, there is enormous space for innovation in the field of micro-finance that has not yet been tapped by mainline financial institutions. Hence, Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti plans to promote a non-banking and not-for-profit micro-finance institution to be called Gramin Rin Sewayan Samitti (Rural Financial Services). It is now well-known in the field of micro-finance and has started to independently command the attention of others in the field, who visit to learn from its systems and field practices. Achieve Universal Primary Education Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti has plans to enable support to children to complete 10 years of schooling. It is not that the children have been given substantial material inputs to stay in school, though that has also been done; it has been more of working with parents to convince them of the value of schooling, and working with the government and the school committees to build a better learning environment in schools. Regular summer camps are to be held for children in some of Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti project locations with a mix of lessons and cultural activities. Close to examination times, special coaching classes would be conducted each year to enable children of non-literate parents to prepare better. As briefly mentioned Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti plans to set up one vocational training institute that is independently registered. It plans to offer 3 to 6 month courses in a variety of vocational skills for both boys and girls. Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women As already mentioned, more than 95% of the membership in SHGs is of women. The important thing to note here is not only do they now have savings in their own name, access to credit, and have experienced a rise in status coming in the wake of this money power, every member of each SHG also undergoes

between 8 and 14 modules of training in a variety of topics that prepare them to face the challenges of integrating with the mainstream. To this end, Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti plans to conduct more than 100 training programmes each year. Through Community Managed Resource Centers Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti plans to establish legal help desks in more than 10 locations and in most locations the services are to be provided mainly to women. Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti plans to organize SHGs of female sex workers. Though this was not originally planned (the plan was only to work on HIV-AIDS issues with high risk groups), the women showed interest in forming SHGs. These SHGs would receive institution-building training inputs, and some of them would also take membership in the Community Managed Resource Centers where they are well accepted by the others. Reduce Child Mortality and Improve Maternal Health Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti strives for institutional Deliveries of pregnant women as per the Janani Suvida Yojana (JSY) programme as being implemented by national rural Health Mission. Combat HIV-AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria and other Killer Diseases Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti has been extensively popularizing facts related to the Six Killer Diseases in Childhood (polio, whooping cough, tetanus, diphtheria, measles, and tuberculosis) and has worked with the government to promote full immunization of all children. In this context, it has also actively participated in the more recent Pulse Polio Campaign and has won prizes for enabling the most number of immunizations. Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti plans to pioneer rural-focused HIV-AIDS awareness and prevention programme to cover an adult population using a multi-media approach, the programme adopted many of the strategies and activities that have since come into mainstream use in India. Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti has also been taking up HIV-AIDS awareness as a credit-plus training activity for self help group members on almost all its project locations. In addition to HIV-AIDS and STIs, Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti is also addressing problems like tuberculosis, leprosy, diabetes, diarrhea, etc. in needed locations through public and private collaborations. Since disease manifestations are closely linked with the status of water and sanitation, Shristi Jan Kalyan Samitti is also engaged in drinking water and sanitation programmes, both on its own and in collaboration with the Government. Ensure Environmental Sustainability Shristi Jan Kalyan Samittis commitment to work on environmental sustainability issues is most obviously manifested in its efforts to promote environmental sustainable development. Environmental protection and promotion are also encouraged through an increasing focus on technologies and a fuller utilization of agricultural and domestic wastes (through biogas, vermicomposting, eco -san toilets, indigenous growth promoters and pest repellents, rain water harvesting, tree planting on field bunds, etc.), all of which are being promoted.
