Preface

Preface
The purpose of the whole manual

The manual "Working in Tellabs 6300 Manager" describes the core functionality of Tellabs 6300 manager and covers: The main graphical user interface of Tellabs 6300 manager and how to operate in it. The windows for the more specialised operations (creation and management of trails, for example) are mentioned briefly, with reference to the relevant manuals. The elements of the network model and how to create the network representation. The entity browser, which provides a graphical user interface for working directly with the network model entities as represented by a TeMIP hierarchy. Handling of alarms as carried out in the TeMIP Clients alarm handling windows. We assume that you are familiar with Microsoft Windows and that you know how to navigate in a tree structure, how to activate pop-up menus and so on.
Note: The manual has been split up into 5 separate volumes:

Volume 1 describes the main graphical user interface and the general principles of operation in Tellabs 6300 manager. See reference item [1] Volume 2 describes how to create the model of your network with the network editor. See reference item [2]. Volume 3 describes how alarms are displayed and handled. See reference item [3]. Volume 4 describes the windows and functionality of the entity browser. Volume 5 describes those functions of Tellabs 6300 Manager that apply to the management of all network element types. See reference item [4].
The structure of this volume

This volume is structured as follows: 1 The Entity Browser on page 9 provides some background information about the entity hierarchy as network object representation. 2 The Windows of the Entity Browser on page 15 introduces the graphical user interface (that is, the Entity View window and the Directive View window). 3 Work Procedures on page 25 describes how to work in the windows. 4 Standard Operations on page 45 describes the Show and Set operations, which can be used in connection with all types of entities.

Preface

Style conventions

The following style conventions are used in the manual: Names from the screen
A bold typeface is used for names of, for instance, windows, operations, fields, and push buttons when the names appear on the screen (example: the Entity View window). This makes it possible to use the name alone when it is clear that we are referring to, for instance, a push button (example: Press OK). Note that bold typeface is also used in other contexts (for example, in section headings).

Text from the screen Quotation marks are used for text strings from the screen (example: Identifier too long). Words to be substituted Italics are used for words to be substituted by a specific member of the group that the word represents (example: Entity name). If the words are substituted by the system, angle brackets are used around the italics.
Note: Italics are also used in other contexts.

Words to be entered A monospaced font is used for words to be typed exactly as they appear (example: Enter LND vc4 NEMatrix london_x1 in the A End field). Menus Arrows are used for indicating the menu structure in instructions on how to select a certain menu item (example: Select File Create). Keyboard shortcuts There are two types of keyboard shortcuts: alternatives to buttons in a window, and alternatives to menu items. When one of the letters in the text in a button or next to a toggle button is underlined, you can use the key combination Alt + <underlined letter> as an alternative to using the mouse. In the text, such keyboard shortcuts are written as Alt/<letter>. The keyboard shortcut for a menu item is the key combination Ctrl + <letter>. In the text, such keyboard shortcuts are written as, for example, Ctrl+A.

1 The Entity Browser

The Entity Browser

The following is described: 1.1 Introduction to the Entity Browser on page 9 1.2 Working in the Entity Browser on page 10 1.3 Parameter Fields and Field Entries in Directive View on page 12

Overview

1.1

Introduction to the Entity Browser

In the network model, the terms used for the individual objects and their subparts are entities and child entities, respectively (one entity containing a number of child entities). Some of the child entities can be further divided into child entities.
Note: The term child entity is only used to indicate the relationship between

Terminology

an entity and its parent entity. In general, the term entity is used also for entities that are child entities of other entities if such a relationship is not the relevant issue. The entity corresponding to the main object (for example, an NE) is sometimes called a global entity.
The graphical user interface

The entity browser is a tool that allows you to work directly on any specific TeMIP entity. By navigating through the entity hierarchy, you can also locate entities not available directly in the Network Management window. The graphical user interface of the entity browser consists of the two windows shown in the figure.

MA269 Rev. C1

Tellabs 6300 Network Manager Working in Tellabs 6300 Manager Vol. 4: Using the Entity Browser

1 The Entity Browser

The windows are: the Directive View window, which is where you can issue operations on existing entities or register and create new entities. See 2.1 The Window for Executing an Operation on page 15. the Entity View window, which is where you can browse through the entities that already exist in Tellabs 6300 manager and locate the relevant entity. See 2.2 The Window for Locating an Entity on page 19.
Entity representation

In the entity browser, the entity is represented by its full name. The name is shown as a text string in the Entity fields of the Directive View and Entity View windows and shown as a hierarchy of classes and instances in the entity hierarchy area of the Entity View window.

Text in normal typeface is used for classes and text in bold typeface is used for specific instances.
Note: As you can see in the figure, the entity hierarchy area of the Entity View window shows the entity specified in the Entity field and its child enti-

ties.

1.2

Working in the Entity Browser

The two windows of the entity browser (Directive View window and Entity View window) work together closely. You can open/renew the Entity View window for any entity currently specified in the Directive View window, and you can open/renew the Directive View window for any entity shown in the Entity View window (this includes any classes and instances currently shown in the entity hierarchy area).
Note: Wildcards are accepted in the Directive View windows Entity field (for example, when the window is activated from a class in the Entity View window) and in the Entity View windows Entity field.

Directive and entity views

Activating the Directive View window

When the Directive View window is activated (either opened for the first time or renewed for another entity), the Show operation is often executed automatically for the selected entity. A list of those operations that are available for the currently specified entity is contained in the Directive field.

1 The Entity Browser

When you select an operation that requires parameter values, the parameters will be displayed as individual fields in an input area. Mandatory parameters are indicated (by a check box which cannot be changed) and default values are shown where relevant.

Specifying the entity

When you want to work with another entity than the one currently specified in the Directive View window or the Entity View window or both, you can either open a new view window for the new entity or use the already open window. The specification of the new entity is done either by entering the entitys name directly in the Entity field or by activating the window via the menu items and tool buttons available in the windows. In the Entity View window, you can activate the windows both for the currently displayed entity (that is, for the entity currently specified in the Entity field) and for any of the classes and instances shown in the entity hierarchy. In the Directive View window, you can activate the Entity View window only for the entity specified in the Entity field, but you can activate the Directive View window for any entities listed in the output area.
Note: If you activate the Directive View window from a class shown in the Entity View window, the operation that you execute subsequently will af-

fect all instances of that class. This is shown by the use of a wildcard in the Directive View windows Entity field.

Overview

Parameter Fields and Field Entries in Directive View

The following is described: 1.3.1 Types of Parameter Fields on page 12 1.3.2 Name Formats on page 13

1.3.1

Types of Parameter Fields

Each parameter to a specific operation is shown in the input area of the Directive View window in the form of one of these field types:

Different types of fields

Entry fields, in which you can enter the value directly either by typing it or by using "copy and paste". Enumeration fields, containing a list of values that you can display and select the required value from. You display the list of values by opening the drop-down list in the field. List ... fields, representing sequences or records, where you have to create the required members (that is, the sets of actual fields). See To set up a list in a List ... field on page 12. Choice fields, which are a list of fields from which you can use only one at a time. See Choice fields on page 13.
To set up a list in a List ... field

A sequence or record parameter is initially shown in the Directive View window as a List ... field. You will have to create members manually (using the pop-up menu in the field) to display the actual entry fields. The procedure describes how to do that.
Step 1 Action

Click in the List ... field to display the pop-up menu.

Select the menu item Create member. A new member (that is, a set of one or more fields) for the sequence or record appears.

Repeat Steps 1 to 2 as many times as required to set up the full list.

Choice fields

Choice fields are a special type of parameter fields. They can be identified by the common suffix _choice. For parameters consisting of such fields only one field can contain a value at a time. Groups of fields can, however, also be choice groups where only one group can have values at a time, as shown in the figure.

Note: Choice fields have not been implemented in the present release of the entity browser. It is therefore not possible to use the Directive View win-

dow to execute operations requiring choice field parameters.

1.3.2

Name Formats
For parameters specifying entities you can use different name formats. The names are not case-sensitive.

The two windows of the entity browser are described in detail: 2.1 The Window for Executing an Operation on page 15 2.2 The Window for Locating an Entity on page 19

Overview

2.1

The Window for Executing an Operation

You can execute an operation for a specific TeMIP entity in the Directive View window.
Note: Only the operations relevant for the currently specified entity will be

The Directive View window

available.

The Directive View window consists of the following parts: a menu bar, in which you can open another Directive View window, close the current window or the entity browser, search for text strings in the operation output, and so on. an operation area with syntax fields, in which you can specify the entity name (Entity) and the operation name (Directive). an input area, in which you can give values to any parameters required by the operation. Note that this area is displayed only if the currently selected operation requires parameters. an output area, which shows the output data of the operation when it has been executed. a toolbar, containing buttons with which you can start the operation, print the displayed data, and so on. a status line, in which the syntax of the current operation is shown.

2 The Windows of the Entity Browser

2.1.1

Inside the Directive View window

The entity specified in the Entity field determines which operations are currently available in the Directive View window. To select an operation, open the drop-down list in the Directive field. When you have selected the required operation, any required parameters to the operation will be represented by fields in the input area.

The operation area

To use the Directive View window for another entity than the originally specified, you can either enter the name of the new entity directly in the Entity field or you can renew the window via an entity selected in either a connected Entity View window or in the output area of the Directive View window itself.
Note: The Entity field allows the use of wildcards. That is, you can execute an

operation either for one specific entity or for a whole group of similar entities.
The input area

If the currently selected operation requires parameter values, fields for these parameters are displayed in the input area.

Alongside each field is a check box, which is checked when you enter/select a value in the parameter field. If you decide not to use the parameter after all, you simply set the check box to off again. Mandatory parameters (if any) are shown at the top of the list with the check box automatically checked and unchangeable. The different types of fields are described in 1.3 Parameter Fields and Field Entries in Directive View on page 12.

2 The Windows of the Entity Browser

The output area

When an operation has been executed, the output data of the operation are displayed in the output area (if the operation fails, an error message is displayed instead).

Note: Entity names shown as part of the output are selectable so that you can renew the current window or activate a new Directive View window for

that entity. If you click on the entity name, the current window is renewed for the entity. The pop-up menu for the entity name contains menu items for either renewing the current window or activating a new window.

the entity or entities that you wish to execute the operation for. As it is possible to use wildcards in the Entity field, a whole group of entities may actually be specified and not just one.
Step 1 Action

In the Directive View window, open the Directive drop-down list and select the required operation.
Note: Only the operations relevant for the currently specified entity

will be available.

If the operation requires any special parameters, these will be displayed in the input area.

If required, specify the relevant values of the parameters in the input area fields. Depending on the type of the field, this is done in one of the following ways: If the field is a normal entry field, click in the field and type the required parameter value or use copy/paste for entering entity names. See To copy and paste on page 28. If the field contains a drop-down list, open the drop-down list and select the relevant value. If the field is a list, click in the field and select the menu item Create member as many times as relevant. Then enter the required value in the field(s) for each member. If the field is a group of choice fields, select the required choice and enter the required value in the field(s) for that choice.

Locating Another Entity

If you want to perform an operation in the Directive View window on an entity that is not available directly in the Network Management windows graphical user interface or in the Directive View windows output area, you can use the Entity View window to locate the required entity in the entity hierarchy. This procedure describes how to locate en entity via the hierarchy.
Step 1 Action

To locate a specific entity

In the Directive View window, click the Entity View button.

The Entity View window appears, showing the entity currently specified in the Directive View windows Entity field.
2

Locate the required entity in one of the ways described in The ways to locate an entity on page 29. To activate the existing Directive View window for the new entity use one of the following options: If the required entity is the one shown in the Entity View windows Entity field, click the Directive View button.

If the required entity is displayed in the Entity View window as a child entity, open the pop-up menu for the entity and select one of the menu items Show and Directive View. The Entity field of the Directive View window now specifies the new entity. If you used the menu item Show, the window also shows the output of the Show operation.
4

To activate a new Directive View window for the new entity, open the pop-up menu for the entity and select the menu item Show in new window. A new Directive View window opens, with the entity specified in the Entity field. The window also shows the output of the Show operation for the entity.

4 Standard Operations

Standard Operations
The two basic operations of Tellabs 6300 manager are Show and Set, which are used, respectively, for showing the values of all attributes and for modifying the value(s) of one or more attributes. 4.1 Attribute Groups on page 45 4.2 The Show Operation on page 46 4.3 The Set Operation on page 47

Overview

4.1

Attribute Groups
Within each entity the attributes are grouped according to the type of information they represent. The following attribute groups are relevant: Identifiers Characteristics Status Counters Routing

Attribute groups

Identifiers

Each entity can be identified by a unique name, represented by the value of an Identifiers attribute. You can show these attributes but you cannot set them. They are used by Tellabs 6300 manager itself for locating the entities. The configuration data for an entity are represented by the Characteristics attributes. You can both show and set most of these attributes. The configuration of a network element (NE), for example, defines which modules the NE contains, and how it handles alarms. Furthermore, each type of NE has specific attributes, which determine its behavior, for instance which timing sources to use. An NE has an initial set of Characteristics values. These values are called initial settings.

Characteristics

Status

The state of an entity is represented by a set of Status attributes. You can show these attributes but except for a very few you cannot set them. The performance of an entity can be monitored by reading the Counters attributes, which show, for instance, background block errors and errored seconds. With performance monitoring enabled, the values of the Counters attributes can be collected automatically over periods of time and performance reports can be generated. You can show these attributes but you cannot set them. Only one Routing attribute exists, namely Managing Director. This attribute can be shown but not modified. It shows the name of the TeMIP director under which the processes managing the entity are run.

4.3

The Set Operation

The Set operation is used to set attribute values for an entity. However, as not all attributes are settable, only the relevant attributes will be represented by parameter fields in the input area. When applied to the Characteristics attributes of a network element supporting the configuration database, the Set operation sets the selected attribute values both in the equipment and in the configuration database. The procedure in To set attributes on page 47 describes how to execute the
Set operation.
