News from Lalaji Memorial Omega International School (LMOIS), Chennai, about Value Based Spiritual Education (VBSE).

We have all been seeing the growth of VBSE in the school over the years and I have personally been Babuji distinguishes gratified many times to witness the diversified activities undertaken by the VBSE Department. The idea very clearly between is that the lessons we derive from the curriculum is more and more experiential than merely offering emotions and feelings. theoretical knowledge. All of us derive immense benefits from such experiential knowledge which is Feelings are essential. imprinted in our hearts and minds perhaps forever. It is, thereby, that we imbibe and make these values Emotions are likely to part of ourselves and live them throughout our lives. I remember that the major lesson in life is to damage our spiritual listen, meditate over and bring into practice (sravana, manana, nidhidhyasana) these principles in accordance with the statement enunciated in the Brihadaranya Upanishad. I remember the famous story of Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, in this connection, who, while studying in the junior class in school was asked by the class teacher to tell the truth always and never utter a falsehood. All the students in his class confirmed to the teacher next morning that they had indeed learnt the lesson given by the teacher except the boy, Ramakrishna. Every day, the teacher asked for Ramakrishnas confirmation and every day the boy replied that he had not yet learnt the lesson. After P Rajagopalachari 15 days, at last, Ramakrishna confirmed to his teacher that he had now learnt the lesson. The class teacher was surprised that it had taken 15 days for the boy to learn such a simple lesson and asked the boy why it took him so much of time to learn such a simple lesson. The boy calmly replied that only Out of clutter, find that day he had learnt to adhere completely to the truth and bring it into practice in his own life! This is simplicity. From discord, find harmony. the spirit with which our VBSE Department is inculcating the schools values to the dear students on the basis of experiences. I am also reminded of our own Beloved Masters oft- repeated words, Say what you mean and mean what you say. All of us, specially our children, repeat these words every day while reciting the daily prayer. However, I find that these words are still mere words for many of us and we have not implemented them in practice in our daily lives. We, more particularly, the teachers should become living Fill your bowl to the examples of such values and become beacon lights for our children to follow. There are other areas brim and it will spill. where we need to improve further; I am referring to indiscipline in the school buses where bullying by the strong of the weak is still prevalent. I request all our students to respect everyone regardless of age, Keep sharpening your the relative position such as juniors or seniors and so on.

Of course, I am happy that there is a visible improvement in the plans organized by the VBSE Department, of late, in taking the students for volunteering work to the Ashram. The visits to every place has become more purposeful and acquired more practical orientation in all areas. Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to flag off the Peace March from the school. I am gratified to find that all the residents in the areas visited were inspired and were seen marveling at our students for exhibiting such discipline, hard work and passion for reaching out to the fellow humans.

To discern the truth in everything, by whomsoever spoken, is wisdom said Thiruvalluvar saint poet who lived in Tamil Nadu more than 2000 years ago. Wisdom could be defined in many ways, another way to define wisdom is to Learn from our past mistakes and from the mistakes of others. We need to learn about ourselves and our environment which shapes our lives. The challenge of the modern life with newer and newer gadgets which come to be part of our lives need to be handled wisely. If not we may become slaves to them and thereby we may spend more time with these and lose family relations and virtuous values. The education we receive should help us in understanding ourselves. The first sign of a student to get any education is to possess an excellent discipline. This may be the reason as why students are also called disciples in spiritual world. Those who possess discipline are fit to be called disciples. Revered master, P Rajagopalachariji says Education is supposed to

give us humility..if you listen to the old Shastras, our literature Vidya dadaati vinayam (Knowledge bestows humility). The more wise we become, the more humility we must have. Our children need
to practice this discipline everywhere. In school we make sure they develop it very young with our VBSE activities. Parents and society who along with schools have great role in nurturing the future citizens of the world and must realize this great responsibility. Self Awareness and Self Management is about knowing about our strengths and weaknesses. Once we know our strengths and weaknesses then we need to manage these two and be a balanced person. It helps in knowing who we really are. Everyday we should spend some time in this self analysis and ultimately know our real divine nature which is the real self awareness. Once we are aware of the divine nature of ours, then we shall live in peace in all situations. This is the goal of human life. We hope this newsletter helps our readers to understand what our children have learnt and as readers to reflect upon their responsibilities and help their growth. VBSE Team.

My Inspiration
My Mother told me about an incident from Mahatma Gandhijis life which inspired me to be honest during my exams. Once Gandhiji had inspection in his school. The inspector dictated 5 words in English to test their spelling skills. Gandhiji wrote a wrong spelling for the word Kettle. Teacher noticed this and signaled to Gandhiji to copy from his friend sitting next to him. But Gandhiji refused and also felt bad for being asked to copy by his teacher. Krithika VII D

Value Based Spiritual Education is one which leads us to spirituality and makes us explore the feeling of VALUE. The world is full of people and things which we all know, but the value of them no one knows. Unless and until they bring CHANGE in their behavior and become good. Being rich, powerful doesnt mean that one is great or doesnt show ones greatness. But having a big heart and being helpful to others shows that one is great and ones greatness. Everyday some way or other a person changes and learns to value things, feelings and people. Have we ever thought of the kids or elders who have nothing? How do they survive? Well, what I think is that they survive by LOVE which we all must learn. When someone unknown is helping us, we generally use the word Thank you, which shows respect. A bad feeling can always be changed to a good feelings by using the words Please, Sorry, Thank you. And learning these words are not hard but valuing them makes a difference. This is what VBSE teaches. The value of Feelings and Respect. Life is a long journey and the best part is when you are learning something new with an interest to know more of it. This interest is developed only when you listen to the speaker with silence and patience This is done by Value education. Improved my attitude
VBSE is a very good platform given by our school to explore many ideas and thoughts. It has improved my attitude towards myself, others and life in general. I was very short tempered till last year but I have a changed a lot now. I help my mother in her work during the holidays. I think that I have changed a lot now and I am also very sure that it is because of VBSE classes. --G V Aishwarya - X-B What I learnt in Self Awareness and Self Management. VBSE has helped me to manage myself and be conscious and cautious about society around me. I have learnt how to manage myself, my emotions and my expressions. Self Awareness and Self Management taught me to indentify my strengths and weaknesses, how to be careful while talking or expressing something to my friends, and also what others tell about me and my character. Self awareness and self management is the main value that is needed by everyone which makes one perfect in behaviour. --S Poonguzhali IX-E

Many people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apologize for being correct or for being years ahead of your time. Awareness on Paper & Cleanliness

We should write our names on the newspaper as we receive it. Please be aware school is paying for it. We should not throw papers on the ground. We should read newspapers only during free periods, breaks and lunch periods. When we throw papers we waste trees. It is not just newspapers but also books, booklets, chart papers, etc. I am sharing this because when I go to check classes they have more of papers on the ground. Please, let us all make sure this is followed. This is a good way to keep our class clean. Aviraj VIII D

Awareness on Body, Mind and Soul

Many saints and sages have given a lot to this world for this Unity and finally their aim is to make the human race attain salvation. One among those is Patanjali, a Yoga Maharishi, who is the founder of Yoga and has given the same to the human race and said that it can be pratised by all irrespective of any religion. When Yoga is practiced, the body, emotion and mind gets united. Equanimity of mind is attained. If each and every individual practice Yoga then, the impurities of the mind are destroyed and then the light of knowledge begins to grow until the attainment of intuitive knowledge. When we have internal peace in ourselves then surely there will be external peace. Then harmony is the fruit of it. Yoga teacher Ms Kavitha

Awareness about our environment

Nature is hitting back, not with the conventional weapons but by floods, plagues, holocausts, etc. We can neutralize them S he is fighting back with strange instrument called neuroses. She is deliberately inflicting mankind with the jitters She is takin g the world away from the intellectuals, and giving it back to apes. (Robert E. Sherwood, The Petrified forest) I think it is a justified conclusion. Nature has endured all this pain & suffering inflicted by humans. Why have we done this, have we lost all that is good in us? We humans have laid down nature on the pyre, just for our own selfish motives. Why have we betrayed nature? Nature has never been selfish & cruel with us, then why have we betrayed nature? Today what we need is morality, when talking about nature, to be specific environmental morality. When we reduce our needs to minimum levels possible, we are said to be in tune with nature & when we are in tune with nature, we automatically possess environmental morality. We humans exploit nature just to satisfy our own wants. What needs to be learnt here is that it is very normal & justified to satisfy needs, but wants are different from needs. Needs are necessary , wants are desiring for more & more, should we say for something extra. Humans consider nature as weak & unresponsive , but dont they know that there is always a reaction when we fiddle wit h nature for our greedy interests? Nature will be good towards good & bad towards bad. William Wordsworth has said Nature neve r did betray the heart that loved her What I think is that nature has not betrayed even those who did not love her. It is the law of nature, for every action there is reaction, so if humans inflict pain & suffering on nature, so will the nature. So now , how to bring about environmental morality in us? We can learn this from a quote from (Pope, Essay on Man , I) All are but parts of one stupendous whole, whose body nature is, and god the soul. So if we think that we are part of nat ure or rather nature itself, then I think their, will be no one who will harm themselves or the nature. We today should illuminate ourselves, we should realize that their isnt much time left, we should start working for the nature, otherwise then we have to fight fo r our own survival. Have we forgotten the pleasure we had while staying with nature, have we forgotten the words of (Childe Harold IV by Byron) There is pleasure in the pathless woods, There is rapture on the lonely shore, There is society where none intrudes, By the deep sea, and music in its roar, I love not man the less, but nature more. Similar are my feelings. Now its high time we realize that there is not much time. We should start practicing environmental morality. We should do whatever it takes to save nature Our home , our planet our earth , our only hope Its time we take our understanding & plans to a higher level & bring it into action as soon as possible because every right decision taken at wrong time or late , is a wrong decision. So let us bring our hearts together & work collectively so that our efforts breed success. Let us do what our planet needs us to do. Let us heal our mother Earth. Let us revive & revert and head back to our roots. Vivek XII E

Sathwik: So do you think this applies for only the neighbours? Sudha: No, not exactly. We need to be friendly with every human being. And also the other living organisms around us. Sathwik: There are people in this world whom you might not be liking, what about them? Sudha: Even if we do not like them, we should love them and care for them. When hearts begin to speak, language and age are no barriers.

My visit to old age home

When I saw the old age people, I was scared to go close to them. Actually I didnt want to. They were too old and scary but as the time passed, I thought of my grandma and I was depressed so I changed my mind thinking of them as my grandparents. Slowly time passed and they were my friends and I was blessed by them. They were full of love, blessing me. I could see the smile from their face and my face too. I realized that we can also communicate even though I dont speak their language. On the way back to school I was thinking about my grandma and grandpa missing them so much for the first time in my life and their smile as they saw me. Now, I know they love me and how much they love me. Hoping they are healthy forever I miss them again. Farhan: Good morning, teachers and everyone present here. I, Farhan and Ashok here happily welcome you to communal harmony day celebrations. Ashok: Hey Farhan, have you ever wondered living in India, we are scattered in so many ways yet we belong to one glorious country? Farhan: What do you mean? Ashok: Farhan, we have so many different languages, costumes, food that we eat, yet we come together as one nation in so many ways. Farhan: Ashok, you are right. I have seen this so many times that when India plays a cricket match or when we face terror attacks we all come as one united nation. Ashok: Farhan, Do you remember how Gandhiji freed India? He spread harmony between all the people of our country. Farhan: Yes, you are right, but ever since India got freedom, it has been plagued with problems based on religion, caste, creed, region and language. These problems adversely affects socio-economic growth and weakens the country. Ashok: Communal Harmony, therefore is needed to maintain internal peace which in turn brings prosperity. Farhan: The task of promoting communal harmony is the collective responsibility of all the citizens including educators, teachers, parents and students. It has also been felt at various platform that efforts should be made at school level to modify the attitude of the future generation. Ashok: Yes, I agree with you. Thats why we all are gathered here to celebrate and cherish communal harmony

The best award to teacher.

I am privileged to share this incident in my life. It is not just an incident but an unforgettable moment in my life that filled my eyes with tears. On a sunny day, I was standing in a long queue to get my licence in the RTO. WHile I was eagerly waiting for my turn, I saw a wellgroomed young man walking towards me. I guessed he must be a staff in the RTO. COiming near to me, he asked "Rohini!?", I replied, "Yes..."My brain induced me to answer about my documents. Meanwhile, I did not fail to notice a flash of happiness in his syes when I said "yes". He asked me, "Akka, how are you?",Puzzled by the question, I replied "Ya..fine. But I don't know who you are". He smiled and asked me again, "Akka, don't you recognize me?" I nodded my head strongly. But I was really stunned when he said, "Akka, am your student." I could not believe my ears. Looking at my confused face, he laughed and said, "Akka, let me tell you,...I was your student in Ambedkar Tuition Centre. I am Anbazhagan, you taught me English. Don't you remember me?" YES!! I remembered now. The stream of pleasant memories started pouring in my mind. When I was doing my degree, I joined a group of social workers, we started a tuition centre in a near by slum. We began to support these children to get education. Now I could visualize the pictures of this boy-man? who was studying 7th std. I could hear that thin boy's feeble voice and his legible handwriting. Our tuition centre that runs under a thatched roof came in front of me for a moment. When I was dwelling into these thoughts, his voice brought me back to the RTO."Akka, I am working in TCS, now". I was very happy that a first generation child who went to school, working in a reputed company. I felt proud of being a teacher. But what he said after this, melted my heart "Akka, I am now taking classes in our tuition centre". This responsibility made me more em otional. My heart began to melt when I came to know that my student shares the love and compassion which I showed to him. It is the real award a teacher should get. - Primary teacher Ms Rohini Karthikeyan

Teachers as The Water Treatment Plant

The water treatment plant That runs below the street Without which we can't Live or breathe. Water flows into her With all its dirt and dust And she just welcomes it Willingly, not because she must. The water currently impure Is treated with great care She has a lot to endure But she has the power to bear. She now cuddles this new innocent water, That is rid of all its dust And provides with things that later It might need, things it didnt have in the past. Water is now fit and pure And it runs here and there But she guides it out into the world The water is ready to go there

She is secretly proud, secretly content, But she keeps a stone on her heart She has to let it go And like an unsung hero She expects no more in return Than to watch the water flow Ishan Bansal XI A

I was excited to go there but after going there I saw the temple garden was dirty and lots of mosquitoes were there. I hesitated to work there. But it was my duty to clean, so I started and after sometime I felt that why should I hesitate to clean. If I hesitate who will do the work? I cleaned now with lot of interest. First I cleaned the plastic wastes and dry leaves. Then I and my friend cleaned the area where the water flows which were all blocked by fallen dry leaves. I was cleaning till our sir, called out Its time , we should move now. Come children. I was totally involved in the work to that extent. It was the BEST VBSE CLASS. It gives us, fun, responsibility and happiness. S Sreeja VIII F

The practical way of internalizing VBSE is to DO tasks. The Knowledge of values is just in the Head or intellect, it sh ould percolate to the HEART where in it is felt and then to HANDS which implement the values. The maxim of VBSE is Values can not be taught but should be caught. The department thought of stimulating the thought processes of class XI students by asking them to list activities that assist them in inculcating values. As a consequence, they have produced a WISH -LIST of activities and identified the values that emerge. Thes e are a few samples from the list.

R Shree KritiVIII F Bharathyar was equally up against society for its mistreatment of the downtrodden people and the British for occupying India...He visualized the new woman as an emanation of Shakthi, a willing helpmate of man to build a new earth through co-operative endevours. P B Harita VIII E Kumaragiri Vema Reddy There is no consensus among scholars about the period in which Vemana lived. Based on some of his poems, his period is believed to be middle of 16th century. He was the third and youngest son of Gaddan Vema, the then King of Kondaveedu in present day Andhra Pradesh. His poems are four lines in length. He travelled widely across south India, acquiring popularity as a poet and yogi. People really took to Vemanas poems owing to their simple language and message. He is celebrated for his style of Chaatu Padyam, a poem with a hidden meaning. Most of Vemanas poems were translated into English, during British rule of India. A large selection of poems are a part of the present High School curriculum of Telugu in Andhra Pradesh. In his honour, Andhra Pradesh Govt. named a University in Kadapa The Yogi Vemana University in 2006.M Praveena X A Kiran Bedi is truly an icon of heroism. She was the first Indian woman to join the Indian Police Servces. She was born on June 9th, 1949 at Amritsar in Punjab. She is one of the renowned police officers who have put in their whole hearted effort in serving the society. Her career started in the year 1970, when she took the job of a lecturer at Khalsa College for women in Amritsar. Two years later, she joined the Indian Police Services. All the way through her career, she has taken up a number of challenging assignments. An interesting thing about Kiran Bedi is that, sometimes, she is referred to as Crane Bedi. The reason behind calling her by this name, is that she dragged the car of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi due to violation of parking rules. Kiran Bedi made the Indian Police Service change its decision in matters related to traffic management, control over narcotics & VIP security. She is really a great inspiration for all girls.

Ramana Maharshi is widely acknowledged as one of the outstanding Indian Gurus of modern times. He was born as Venkatarama Iyer in Tiruchuli in 1870 in Tamil Nadu. At the age of sixteen, Venkataraman lost his sense of individual selfhood, an awakening which he later recognized as enlightenment. A few weeks thereafter he travelled to the holy mountain Arunachala at Thiruvannamalai, where he remained for the rest of his life. His first years were spent in solitude, but his stillness and his appearance as a sanyasin soon attracted devotees. In later years, a Yasha Chittora VIII E community grew up around him, where he was available 24 hrs a day to visitors. Though worshipped by thousands he never allowed any one to treat him special. He treated all with equal respect. Since the 1930s, his teachings have also been popularized in the west. Venkataraman was renamed as Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. S Aparajitha VIII F

Kabir said of himself he was. at once the child of Allah and Ram
So long as man clamours for the I and the Mine, his works are as naught: When all love of the I and the Mine is dead, then the work of the Lord is done. For work has no other aim than the getting of knowledge: When that comes, then work is put away.

'Unless India stands up to the world, no one will respect us. In this world, fear has no place. Only strength respects strength...self respect comes with self reliance'.
We are such a great nation. We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why? We are the second largest producer of wheat in the world. We are the second largest producer of rice. We are the first in milk production. We are number one in remote sensing satellites. Look at Dr Sudarshan. He has transformed the tribal village into a self sustaining, self driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed with bad news and failures and disasters. I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading this Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had this picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert land into an orchard and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside the newspaper, buried among other news. Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? Is it a legacy of our colonial years? We want foreign television sets. We want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology. Why this obsession with everything imported? Do we not realise that self respect comes with self reliance? From his interview with Pritish Nandy http://www.rediff.com/news/1998/oct/13kalam.htm
